Obituary Onnie Bea Peterkin was born in Raeford, N.C. on May 26, 1940 to the late Joseph and Bessie Melvin. During her younger years, she resided in Brooklyn, N.Y. In 2007, she retired from the House of Raeford after 40 years. She was surrounded and supported by her loving family and caregivers during the last days of her life.

Onnie Bea is survived by five children: Mary Bratcher, Hubert Peterkin (Della), Sim Peterkin (Connie), Sharon Bowden (Franklin), and Dennis Peterkin (Darlene). She also raised one nephew, Benjamin Bratcher and two great nephews: Ronnie and Robert Melvin. Bea is also survived by thirteen grandchildren (Ratisha, LaParish, Devaye, Laswanda, Romod, Erica, Sim II, Brianna, April Lynn, Aaron, Shannon, Cameron, and Deona) and five great grandchildren (LaParish Jr., Emora, London, Ky’Zir, and Ezra), three sisters-in-law (Aunt Catherine, Celie, and Jessie Bell), and many nieces and nephews.

Bea, as she was affectionately known, was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert Peterkin, and her parents, Bessie and Joseph Melvin. She was the youngest of thirteen siblings who also preceded her in death: Cliff, Archie, Leana, Mitchell, Redell, Eugene, Martin Luther, Louvenia, Josephine, Pauline, Daisy Mae, Mary Jo, and Mazie.

Bea enjoyed being a part of The Singles and Widows Club at church and the Old Rose Tent #584. She also loved singing in the choir so much so that when her health began to decline, she refused to give up her choir robe because she believed one day she would rejoin the choir. Prior to Bea’s recent health challenges, her life was filled with laughter and building new friendships. Many times, we would walk into her rooms at Open Arms Retirement Center, Autumn Care of Raeford, and The Crossings at Wayside and two or three of her favorite staff members would have stopped by on their break-time to spend time with her. She enjoyed the fun, laughter, and “cutting” up with them. The family thanks each one these ladies (and you know who you are).

During many visits with the family, Bea often talked about how much she missed her siblings: sitting on the front porch with them and the many rides they would take to Aberdeen, N.C. to visit relatives. For someone who never had a driver’s license, she stayed on the go. The family thanks her friends from the neighborhood, her church, and her job who would always stop by to give her a ride. Overall, through life’s many challenges, she was most proud of all her children and grandchildren. She will forever be in our hearts, and we will cherish all the wonderful memories.

Hubert Peterkin

I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge,  will award to me on that day — and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for His appearing. ~ 2 Timothy 4: 7-8

Life Is but A Stopping Place

Life is but a stopping place. A pause in what’s to be.

A resting place along the road, to sweet eternity. We all have different journeys. Different paths along the way.

We all were meant to learn some things,But never meant to stay.

Our destination is a place,Far greater than we’ve traveled, Heaven.

The Last Thing I’ll Give to You

When we were little you always had something for us.Be it our favorite meal, some candy,

Or some little trinket to let us know we were special. Then you aged and we grew up and the roles reversed.

Every time we saw you, we brought you something.Be it healthy snacks, personal necessities, and a few indulgences.

These words are our last gift to you.You have been a blessing to so many.

You have fed the hungry, entertained us, and taught us to be strong. You have poured into us and loved us

Beyond the broken places in our hearts. You have filled our voids and made sure we know

How imperfectly perfect we truly are.The last thing we’ll give you is to thank you for being you

And the force you have been in our livesAnd our promise to keep our family traditions alive,

To love and to respect each other.

The Grandchildren
