Our September meeting kicked off with the ever- popular Jack Kent who showed us how to plan for spring as we close our gardens for winter. For our October meeting, back in the Old Town Hall, Rick Dawson helps us to welcome winter birds to our gardens. November 18th is our annual Pot Luck Dinner and Annual General Meeting. Delicious food, a delightful a cappella singing group called ‘High 5’, fun and fellowship, why not plan to join us! Along with our usual activities and meetings we have some new projects ahead of us during the next year. In our on-going efforts to better communicate with our members and potential new members we have taken a very successful step into social media. You can now follow us on Twitter (see box at right). Later this year we’ll be found on Facebook and plan to have our own web site up and running. New signage for our annual events will be ready for our spring Plant Sale and we’ll continue with our usual communications through Ancaster News, ancaster.com and this newsletter. Our district, OHA District 6, will be hosting the annual convention next July 3-5 at Redeemer College. Many of our members are already hard at work on the planning committees. So, we have a busy year ahead of us and we’d love to have you join us. Our thanks go out to our Directors and their teams who so successfully lead the Trillium judging and Awards Ceremony and our Annual Flower, Vegetable & Photo Show. Both events were held at new venues, due to repairs at the Old Town Hall, and involved a great deal of equipment moving and storing and problem solving. THANK YOU & WELL DONE to all of you! by Lorraine Held Our Show was held on Sat. August 16th at St. John’s Anglican Church Parish Hall as our usual venue, at the Old Town Hall, was undergoing renovations. The Show must go on and, go on it did! There were 154 excellent entries earning members $226 in prize money, 8 Certificates and 14 Trophies. Thanks are extended to Sheila Oddy and Heinz Held for tabulating the points quickly by computer. Also thanks to Councillor Lloyd Ferguson for taking time to be with us and for assisting with the presentation of the awards. Betty Howitt and her committee canvassed 39 Ancaster businesses and individuals who donated 51 door prizes and 8 raffle prizes. We thank them for their generosity and urge you to support these community businesses. (see list of donors on p.3) The total number of entries was down this year, likely due to the change in venue. However, the OHA judges and the photo judge were impressed with the quality of our members’ efforts. !Erika McMullen and Rosemary Anstey and their team prepared the sandwiches and desserts for the afternoon tea and did a great job of serving them to our guests. Many thanks, also, to the volunteers who ran errands; to Don Foster, Don Grant, Anthony Vallentin, Bob Wilt who moved equipment: to all who helped with set up and take down. Special thanks to everyone who entered specimens in the show from your gardens and we certainly hope to see more of you next year!

Wonderful Day at WhistlingGardens!

by Betty Howitt On Fri. June 20th, 28 members and friends enjoyed a personally guided tour of Whistling Gardens by its creator, Darren Heimbecker. As we wandered through the gardens it was wonderful to see what Darren had accomplished over the past 2 years. The Conifer Garden now surpasses 2,500 different species and the spring garden boasts over 15,000 spring bulbs in bloom. From the French Arbor Garden to the Rock Garden and beyond, Darren was a wonderful guide, telling many humorous stories along the way. The end of the tour brought us to a shaded area at the Fountain Amphitheatre where we watched the fountain dance to classical music. A group photo was taken at the Temple Garden. Our tour ended at the Aviary containing 43 exotic birds. Many people enjoyed shopping at the garden centre on the way out. I am looking forward to another tour. There’s always something new! !

A BIG Thank you to Ancaster Hort. Society! Thank you to members of AHS for the Mums and the card and for all the support and thoughtfulness during my convalescence with a badly broken ankle. Particular thanks to Bob Wilt & Donna Parker for driving, Erika McMullen for salads and Mabel Ward for muffins and all who called and visited with your good wishes. It’s because of this camaraderie and support that I’ve been a member for so many years. ~ Sue & Clarke Groleau

Trillium Awards 2014 Submitted by Sheila Oddy & Donna Foster-Co-Directors !

Our alternate location for the Trillium Award Ceremony, this year, proved to be quite a success in the peaceful surroundings of Fieldcote Museum. Three of our Honourary Vice Presidents were on hand to present the 100 awards. MP David Sweet, Councillor Lloyd Ferguson and former mayor Bob Wade complimented the Society and the winners on their contributions to the beautification of Ancaster. Of the 100 winners, only 17 were unable to attend to pick up their awards—a record! This year the judges viewed almost 300 properties and picked 6 commercial properties, 7 townhouse and 87 residential gardens as worthy of a Trillium Award. There were 2 Diamond Award winners, who have won over a period of 15 years—TRACY & JERRY DMETRICHUK and RYERSON UNITED CHURCH. In addition, there were 2 Ruby winner for ten years and 8 Gold winners for five years. All are to be congratulated for their efforts. The framed Lifetime Award Certificates will be presented to our Diamond winners at the ‘Hamilton in Bloom’ Opening Ceremony at Gage Park on October 30th. ! Our thanks to our committee of Arpine Morris, Sue Groleau, Kelley Gowland and Ted Oddy; the two Dons—Grant & Foster, who set up the venue with their helpers; to Erika McMullen for providing refreshments and to our hard-working judges and all who helped to make the ceremony a success. We also wish to thank Al Croxall, of Theatre Ancaster, for providing the sound system.

! ! ! Preserving Herbs from your Garden You can bring the flavour of your herb garden into your house for use during the winter. Potting them up and bringing them inside will keep them going for awhile but drying herbs is one of the easiest ways to preserve the flavour and colour. Firm leafed herbs like sage, thyme, bay leaf, rosemary, curly parsley work best for this method. (Moister leafed herbs like basil and tarragon are a bit trickier and must be dried quickly to avoid becoming mouldy.) The simplest drying method is simply tying a bundle of stems and hanging them up in a warm, dry place to air dry. Drying with sunlight, oven, microwave and pressing also work well. It’s fun to experiment with methods to see which work best for each herb. For best flavour: -harvest before the herbs flower,-clean & dry the herbs,-discard any damaged leaves. !Softer leafed herbs, like chives, flat-leafed parsley, dill can be freeze dried. Put clean, dry herbs, whole or chopped, into freezer bags or ice-cube trays with water. For more information check: www.wikihow.com/Dry-Herbs
