The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is constructing an Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) project designed to alert motorists of an alternate route when a train is crossing their path on Florida Avenue in downtown Lakeland. The new system will activate when a train is approaching Florida Avenue between Main Street and Pine Street. Once activated, signs
will light up along Florida Avenue with messages notifying motorists of delays ahead and guiding them to an alternate route.
Northbound motorists will be guided to Lime Street, then Sikes Boulevard, and southbound motorists will be guided to US 98/George Jenkins Boulevard, then Sikes Boulevard. Drivers in both directions will be able to travel beneath the railroad overpass.
Most signs are now in place with the system expected to begin working by June 2019. See back of flier for photos of signs now in place.

Blank-out signs are located on the signal
posts and stand alone railroad crossing signs
along Florida Avenue.
These signs will light up, providing
directions to the alternate route when a
train is approaching, and remain blank
when there is no train approaching.
Did you know that Florida Avenue is also
State Road (SR) 37 south of George Jenkins
Boulevard and US 98 north of George
Jenkins Boulevard?
Signs like the ones pictured here will help
guide motorists back to Florida Avenue,
US 98 to the north, and SR 37 to the south.
They are located along Lime Street, Sikes
Boulevard and George Jenkins Boulevard.
