2016-2017 Program Highlights:The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and The Sun Conference have named several players from across the eight FMU teams to the conferences All Academic Teams. In addition, FMU has the distinction of being named a Scholar-Team by the NAIA (a record of seven FMU teams placed on the scholar list). To be eligible for athletic academic honors the recipient must be at least a sophomore with a grade point average of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale (All-Academic) and for an institution, a team average of 3.1 on a 4.0 scale (Scholar-Teams). Below are a few highlights of the athletic and academic achievement of the fighting lions scholar athletes:

Basketball• Head Basketball Coach Artis Maddox, in his second year with FMU,

was named Sun Conference Coach of the Year.• The FMU men’s basketball team won the regular 2016-2017 season of The Sun Conference.• The FMU Lions men’s basketball team, ranked No.1 in The Sun Conference, finished

as the Sun Conference runner-up in the final championship game.• The FMU women’s basketball team, ranked No. 4 in the Sun Conference, advanced

to the semifinal round of The Sun Conference Championship Tournament.• FMU Forward Abreona Cabell (Jr./Jacksonville, Florida) was named to the All-Conference First-Team.• The Sun Conference awarded six members of the FMU men's basketball as All-

Conference award winners, including the Academic Conference. • In December, the Lions achieved an NAIA Division II national ranking

for the first time since the 2007-2008 season.

Track & Field• Corion Knight, sophomore from Crawfordville, FL named a Four Time All American,

National Title in Men's Long Jump and All-American Honors in Men's High Jump.• Ashley Henry named to Sun Conference All-Defensive Team.• Four Lions qualify for NAIA Nationals Indoor Track Championship

Baseball• Cesar Temes named 2016 Daktronics-NAIA Baseball Scholar-Athlete.

Volleyball• The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) named two FMU women’s

players, Iliana Mendoza and Raquel Laing, as Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes. • Natasha James, Miss FMU, was also named a Daktronics-NAIA Volleyball

Scholar-Athlete and to the Academic All-Sun Conference Team.

• Iliana Mendoza and Raquel Laing were also named to The Sun Conference All-Academic team.

Soccer• Four women's soccer players named Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes

(Hohebeth Vega, Leilani Bellieni, Camila Scobina and Cindy Rosero).• Men's soccer receives first top 25 ranking in the program’s history.• 14 men's soccer players named to Academic All-Conference Team• Seven men's soccer players named to the All-Conference Team• Nine FMU women’s soccer players were named to The Sun Conference Academic All-Conference team.
