CHANGING FLORIDA’S ROAD CULTURE FOR THE BETTER,

TO SAVE ATHLETE’S LIVES I was asked to appear recently on Fox 13 news to discuss what can be done to stem the number of cycling deaths occurring on our roads. In preparing for that interview, I had time to reflect, not just as a cyclist/triathlete/runner, but also as a licensed driver. We have had twelve cycling fatalities this year so far on Florida’s west coast; some caused by cyclists not having lights and/or reflective clothing (we’ve all seen transients’ on bikes at night in dark clothing on busy roads, the people we think must have a death wish); but I’ve also seen far too many experienced cyclists on their way to a Saturday morning ride before sunrise with no lighting either. Many runners are the same; not paying attention, usually listening to ipods or other mp3 players, which distract them from their environment, especially when crossing street.The other side of the equation is the driver; most of whom don’t believe bicyclists belong on THEIR road, who think nothing of buzzing a cyclist (driving as close to the cyclist without hitting them as possible), and without consciously thinking of the consequences of running down a cyclist, a fellow human being. The following are some guidelines for us all that if followed, would have a direct result of making our roads a place of cooperation instead of violence:Cyclists: 1. Make yourself visible; use lights as the law requires; from sunset to sunup, you MUST have lighting;

2. Know your responsibilities as well as your rights on the road: you are responsible for all rules of the road that apply to motor vehicles, including not blowing red lights and stop signs; you have a RIGHT to be on the road, but the RESPONSIBILITY to ride to the far right side of the road, flowing with, not against traffic, except if the far right side is blocked; you may not ride two abreast with your bff unless you are in a designated bicycle lane, and that lane is wide enough to accommo-date two riders; and although this may not be the law, if you value your life and health, it’s a good idea to be courteous to the extreme with the vehicle driver you are sharing the road with; I’ll never understand the logic of a cyclist who gives a “finger” salute to a driver of a several thousand pound piece of instant death dealing machine that nearly collided with you; in all my cycling cases I’ve handled as an attorney, I have yet to see the first one where the cyclist comes out ahead of a bike/car collision.Motorists: 1. Know, understand, and accept that Florida law not only gives the cyclist the right to be on YOUR road, but makes you responsible when passing a cyclist, to give at least a three foot buf-fer to the cyclist. THAT’S THE LAW! How many of you, when driving, knew that was the law? I suspect very few. Educating the driver about cyclists is a must. 2. SHARE THE ROAD: this is not just a slogan, it’s a serious life or death proposition. But this works both ways; how many times have you, on your bike, in a pack of twenty of more, continued through the intersection that half the pack rolled through on a green or yellow light, but that clearly you had a red light, with cars being blocked by you and fellow cyclists? That’s not the way to win over the driving public to cycling. How often have you come up to a light, slowed, seen no traffic coming, and glided through in front of drivers waiting for that same light? Do you really think that endears you to the driver? Should you care? ABSOLUTELY! Enemies behind the wheel can hurt or kill you. Runners: 1. It’s hard to be attentive to traffic with music blaring in your ears; I know, the music helps your run and your conditioning; but please, at least remove the ear buds when crossing busy streets (in fact, any street, because it only takes one car to ruin your day). If you must run in the road, you, as opposed to the cyclist, should run facing oncoming traffic; your life expectancy will improve by doing this. 2. Make sure you have reflective clothing when running after sundown or prior to sunup; it’s easy to buy; at the very least, consider an ankle bracelet that is reflective; most shoes these days have reflective material as well, but I wouldn’t trust the nighttime driver to notice my shoes! In summary; use common sense; remember courtesy to others, even someone who just pulled a bonehead move in front of you; take care to protect yourself; obey the law if you expect others to do the same. Be safe, to stay alive.

TIPS WORTH TRYING FOR SAFER AND MORE PAIN-FREE RUNNING

Gene Ulishney, BS HPE, LMT, CPed

Over the years, through both research and trial, I’ve come across some concepts that seem to work for many individuals. Sometimes they’re just common sense, others a compilation of various research topics and still others, trial and error.

One of the most important topics involves training. How should you actually do it? Most runners just go out and run. If training for a marathon you just run a lot.But, is that the best way to progress to your goal? Recent research, as well as some older research suggests that simple flat out miles may not be the best way to train.

To improve, the body needs to be constantly taxed. This means that your workouts need to be progressively harder or your fitness level will actually begin to reverse itself. By doing the same physical things over and over again, day in and day out, this routine will not continue to have the most positive effects on either your cardiovascular or muscular system. Case in point, when runners experience a heart attack while running, they usually don’t get a second chance.Inevitably the cause is attributed to clogged coronary arteries, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes and/or added stress. Jim Fixx, author of The Complete Book of Running is probably the most famous runner to experience such an event.

So, what can a runner do to help eliminate or reduce some of these causes and symptoms? If you have borderline high blood pressure, be sure to consult your doctor. See if he’s familiar with and would first suggest some natural blood pressure lowering devices such as the Zona Plus cardio grip or the RESPeRATE breathing device. You can do some internet research on these yourself. High cholesterol is fairly common in runners probably due to their diet high in carbohydrates, mainly pasta and other white flour products. Try to use more whole grains. Both high blood pressure and high cholesterol can positively respond to a diet higher in fruits and vegetables of all colors. Try to get a small amount of purple, yellow, orange, red and green-colored fruits or vegetables each day. Add an egg or two (no, they don’t raise your cholesterol), beans (great fiber food) and some good-fat foods such as mixed nuts and seeds, avocados, flax seed oil, fish oil and/or small fish (less mercury). Sardines are one of the best. Periodically, add some grass-fed beef or free-range chicken to round out your diet. Organic is always a better choice if you have the option.

As far as training goes, interval training seems to do the body the most good. Alternating faster pace running or walking with slower pace running or walking seems to improve the cardiovascular system by developing more peripheral blood vessels to and from the heart, thus better preparing it for sudden stress

Alternating faster pace running or walking with slower pace running or walking seems to improve the cardiovascular system by developing more peripheral blood vessels to and from the heart, thus better preparing it for sudden stress

that may ultimately lead to a cardiovascular event. The additional blood vessels can take over from a blocked artery and supply enough blood to the heart to avert a massive heart attack. These same results can be gained by cross-training. Biking and swimming, using the same fast/slow training method are great additions. A 20-30 minute weight training session is a great supplement too, but don’t plan on sitting down. You can get a great cardio workout by alternating upper and lower body exercises with only a few seconds rest in between.

How about nutritional supplements? Nutrition is my hobby and so I get more than a handful of newsletters and on-line newsletters every month. I believe in a good whole food multi-vitamin every day. Most of us can’t possibly eat perfectly every day, so I see it as a back-up. Besides, studies show that the nutritional content in much of our food has been reduced by as much as 70% in the last 60 years or so.

Running pain is always a bummer. My first suggestion is to change your shoes.Head to your local running store for a gait and shoe analysis to make sure you are in the proper shoe. If you are in pain, chances are you are not wearing the proper shoe. The proper shoe can eliminate all but the most persistent aches and pains.

Two of the most common sites of running pain are the heel and knee. Plantar fasciitis (heel pain) can be alleviated with the properly supportive and flexible shoe along with a good foot support. During the healing process, you must be careful not to take even one step without either your shoes or a support sandal.One step can disrupt the healing process and you’re back to square one. A supplement that has proven to be a great healing aid to plantar fasciitis is alfalfa.It’s a natural anti-inflammatory and possesses something which greatly decreases healing time, sometimes in as few as three weeks. No walking barefoot, though. Found in any health food store, I would suggest capsules, as they go down easier. Alfalfa seems also to help other tendon, ligament and joint pain. I found out about it almost 30 years ago and have since experienced great results. As far as general knee pain is concerned, a common cause is just an imbalance in the Quadriceps muscle group. Certain exercises, such as running, have a tendency to work more of this group than another. The Vastus medialis oblique (VMO) seems to get the short end of the stick here. It’s the most medial muscle of the group, just inside and above the knee. Being less-worked, its weaker action sometimes causes the knee to not track as well as it should, causing pain. An easy exercise is to sit on the floor, turn your leg and foot outward and then do a leg-raise. Hold it for as long as you can. Repeat it two more times. Do this 3x a day. Pain should subside within a week. If it doesn’t, have your shoes checked. If you still have no relief, see your doctor as you may have a more serious issue.

Here’s to a healthier and more pain-free summer!
