YOUTH STILL SERVEDIn its respective 2008 season openers, Florirda State and Miami combined to use 43 true freshmen in the opening game. The Semi-noles ran a nation-leading 22 true freshmen out on the fi eld against Western Carolina. The Hurricanes trotted out 21 against Charles-ton Southern, which ranked second nationally. They were the only FBS schools to play more than 15 true freshmen in their fi rst game. Those youngsters are critical to the efforts of two programs deter-mined to return to greatness.

STILL PRODUCING THE BEST PLAYERSEven if Miami and Florida State are not winning national titles like they did in the 1980’s and 90’s, the amount of NFL talent the schools are producing is as good as ever. Miami and FSU were No. 1 and No. 2 in the amount of players on opening day NFL rosters in 2008 and could well eclipse that number in 2009. Heading into the fi nal week of the NFL preseason, there were 92 former Seminoles (41) and Hurricanes (51) on league rosters.

BOWDEN VS. SHANNONFlorida State head coach Bobby Bowden and Hurricane boss Randy Shannon are very familiar with one another. Shannon has been a part of the Hurricane program as a player, assistant and head coach for more than 20 years. Bowden has had to scheme against Shan-non as a player, a position coach, a coordinator and now as a head coach. The Hurricane head coach has fared very well against the Seminoles in his career going 13-8. He was 4-1 while a player at UM, 3-4 as an assistant coach, 5-2 as a defensive coordinator. Bowden’s Seminoles used last season’s 41-39 win to even their head-coaching slate at 1-1.

FSU-MIAMI SERIES: REMEMBER WHEN?Over the course of a 30-season stretch from 1978-2006, the FSU-Miami series featured at least one nationally ranked team, and often both, as the two programs frequently battled for national supremacy. That streak ended in 2007 and carried over to last season, when nei-ther team was nationally ranked when they met. Perhaps the 2009 meeting will start a new string, as the Seminoles open the season at No. 18 in the AP Preseason Poll (No. 19 in USA Today Coaches), though the Hurricanes are unranked. As the programs look forward, it’s important to remember the rich past, which from 1978-06 in-cluded:

Combined record: ...............................................................569-159-4National championships: ...................................................................7BCS games: .............................................................. 32 (17-15 record)Wins vs. #1 team: ..................................... 10 (4 against each other)All-Americans: .................................................................................. 98Heisman Trophy winners: ..................................................................4Players drafted in NFL: .................................342 (82 in fi rst round)

“YOUNG, BUT EXPERIENCED”Though it sounds like a contradiction, Florida State coach Bobby Bowden and offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher have both de-scribed the 2009 Seminoles as, “young, but experienced.” A look at the current Seminoles with career starts against Miami may best depict that anomaly. There are 17 FSU players with at least one ca-reer start against the Hurricanes, but only three of those have made two starts.

TURNING THE TIDE IN CLOSE GAMESFrom 1974 through1999, Florida State failed to win a game against Miami decided by single digit points. That trend, however, has been reversed in recent years. Each of the Seminoles last three victories over the ‘Canes (2005, 06 and 08) has been decided by three points or fewer, including last season’s wild 41-39 triumph at Dolphin Stadium. In all, only six of FSU’s 23 series wins have been decided by a fi eld goal or less, compared to 11 of Miami’s 30 series triumphs by the value of a fi eld goal or less. Florida State lost all nine games decided by a fi eld goal or less from 1975-2004.

TIES THAT BINDFlorida State and Miami are very familiar with one another having played each other every season since 1969, a streak of 40 straight years. The programs are also closely tied together because of the familiarity of the players. With a total of 127 players from the state of Florida on the two rosters, the Seminole and Hurricane players are familiar with one another as opponents and even teammates. There are 39 players on the roster that have played at the same high school

FSU 41, Miami 39

MIAMI (AP) – Antone Smith rushed for a career-best four touchdowns, including a game-clinching 20-yarder with 3:57 remaining, and Florida State wasted most of an early 24-point lead before hanging on to beat Miami 41-39 on Saturday. Smith - who scored three TDs last week - fi nished with 92 yards on 27 carries for the Seminoles (4-1, 1-1 ACC), who handed Miami its second straight home loss on a stormy afternoon. Christian Ponder ran for 144 yards, becoming the fi rst Florida State quarterback since Charlie Ward in 1992 to run for triple-fi gures, and Tony Carter made two interceptions for the Seminoles. Travis Benjamin had an 18-yard touchdown run on an end-around, caught a 51-yard TD pass from running back Graig Cooper, and fi nished with 274 all-purpose yards for Miami (2-3, 0-2), which has lost 12 of its last 15 conference games. The Hurricanes trailed 24-3 at the half and 31-10 in the third quarter, then closed to within 34-32 with 8 minutes remaining. Two botched snaps on Florida State punts led to Miami points, Sean Spence ran an interception in for a touchdown and the Hurricanes seemed poised for what would have been an enormous rally. But Smith sealed the win with a third-down run up the middle, giving coach Bobby Bowden just his 14th win in 34 games all-time against Miami.

Head Coach Bobby Bowden32 AND COUNTINGBowden continues to build on his College of Football Hall of Fame legacy, one year at a time. Last season’s 9-4 record extended the program’s streak of consecutive win-ning seasons to 32 under his watch. The only losing season in his FSU career came in his fi rst year on the job when Florida State posted a 5-6 record. Since then the Seminoles have won more than they have lost every year. No other university in the FBS can claim to have a current season win streak as long as Florida State’s 32 in a row.

CANES HAVE BEEN A NEMESISEntering his 34th season at Florida State, Bobby Bowden has squared off against 71 different schools, including 16 he has faced at least 10 times. Only eight schools have winning records against Bowden-coached FSU teams. Miami, however, is the only team FSU has faced more than 10 times and boasts a winning mark. The Hurricanes are 20-14 all-time against Bowden’s Seminoles, who have actually nar-rowed the gap by winning three of the last four.

BOWDEN’S 500th GAME AGAINST COLORADOFlorida State’s Bobby Bowden reached a milestone against Colora-do in 2008 by coaching his 500th career collegiate football game. Bowden is only the third coach in college football history to coach in 500 or more games - joining the legendary Amos Alonzo Stagg (last coached at Pacifi c in 1946) and Penn State’s Joe Paterno (currently active) who coached the 500th game of his Penn State career when he led his Nittany Lions into the Alamo Bowl in 2007. After Bowden and Paterno, the closest active coach is Virginia Tech’s Frank Beamer, who has coached 335 games so far in his career. Bowden reached another milestone later last year, when he logged his 400th game at Florida State in a win over Clemson.

HUDSON: EVERYBODY’S ALL-AMERICANJunior left guard Rodney Hudson is well on his way to becoming the most decorated offensive lineman in Florida State history. After earn-ing Freshman All-American honors in 2007, Hudson gained some national attention as a sophomore, after earning fi rst-team All-ACC honors. Entering his third season as a starter, the Mobile, Ala. Native has been a consensus fi rst-team All-American in the preseason pub-lications. College Football News rates him as the No. 1 guard in the country. As a result, Hudson is a candidate for the Lombardi Award, presented to the nation’s lineman of the year.

PONDER THE SCHOLARRedshirt junior quarterback Christian Ponder’s star is rising on the football fi eld, but his academic prowess is already in the “other-world-ly” class. After earning his bachelor’s degree in fi nance (3.72 gpa, Magna Cum Laude) in the summer of 2008, Ponder began working on his MBA and will graduate in May. He is currently carrying a 3.72 gpa in the post-graduate program. In a span of 4 ½ years Ponder will have completed his undergraduate and graduate degrees, with a year of athletic eligibility remaining. A three-time ACC Academic Honor Roll member, he has been on the Dean’s List at Florida State four times and posted a 4.0 GPA last fall as a graduate student.

GRADUATES ABOUNDFive current Seminoles have already picked up their degrees from Florida State, headed by Ponder, one of three players already in a graduate school program. Long snapper Zach Aronson and corner-back Ochuko Jenije earned their undergraduate degrees in sports management and are now in the international marketing & manage-ment communications, and higher education graduate programs, re-spectively. Free safety Jamie Robinson and defensive tackle Kendrick Stewart are pursuing second bachelor’s degrees after completing un-dergraduate work in social science and sports management, respec-tively. All fi ve are projected starters against the Hurricanes.

BEAR OF A SCHEDULEWith 11 of 12 opponents on the Seminoles 2009 schedule coming off bowl appearances last season, FSU’s schedule ranks as one of the toughest in the nation. It features non-conference dates with Jack-sonville State – an FCS opponent coming off an 8-3 season - BYU, South Florida and defending national champion Florida. Tack on the eight Atlantic Coast Conference games and the combined record of the Seminoles 12 foes is 101-55 – a .657 winning percentage. That’s more wins by opponents than any other team in the country. Fur-thermore, FSU’s FBS opponents were 93-49 (.645), which is also the most of any FCS program in the country.
