  • The Year of the Rooster (or Gamecock

    according to the Rev)

Just what does a rooster have to do with Good Friday?

"Truly I tell you," Jesus answered, "this very night, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times." And so it came to pass that Peter did deny Christ 3 times, “I don’t know you.” “I don’t know you.” “I don’t know you.” The rooster became a Christian symbol as its’ crow reminds us of these three things: the sun still comes up, there is grace and forgiveness, and God still loves us!

As we begin the month of April we continue our Lenten Season of preparation for the blessings of Holy Week. This is the week that makes all other weeks possible for us and all Christians around the world. From Palm Sunday through Easter morning we gather to learn, break bread, worship, weep, wait, and celebrate. Holy Week is packed with emotion and opportunities to turn our hearts and minds toward the Lord, Holy Week is our chance to seek God and embrace the gift of grace we have in Christ. On Sunday April 9 we begin with Palm/Passion Sunday and we celebrate with all those who cheered Jesus' arrival in Jerusalem. Wednesday April 12, we will meet for our final Lenten Lunch and devotion in the Fellowship Hall at noon. Thursday at 7pm we welcome the Centenary United Methodist congregation to worship with us in the sanctuary. Rev. Aaron Ankeny will preach, our choirs will sing together, and we will share communion together. At noon on Good Friday in the sanctuary will be our Tenebrae service, a time of Scripture and meditation on that day that our Lord was crucified. On Saturday we pray and wait, and then Easter Sunday we rejoice in the raising of the Christ with a sunrise communion service at 7am in the courtyard and then again at 11am for our traditional communion service, with special music, in the sanctuary. I hope that you can be at many if not all of the services planned for this most special of weeks! Let us gather together and proclaim that we are a family of faith, waiting, praying, and suffering together, so that we can then lift our hearts and voices together shouting Hallelujah! We are an Easter People! Peace and Grace to all, Chris

Alex Favazza and Marques Garrett enjoyed a very chilly conference at the American Choral Directors’ Association national conference in Minneapolis, Minnesota, March 8-11, 2017. This photo is from the "One in Song Hymn Sing" hymn festival. Pictured are hundreds of choral directors singing "It is Well with my Soul" in Westminster Presbyterian Church of Minneapolis (PC-USA) in downtown Minneapolis.

  • Luncheon For New Members and Their Shepherds

A luncheon honoring our new members was hosted on Sunday, February 26, 2017 by members of the Church Growth and Evangelism, and the Christian Service- Faith in Action Committees:

Wayne Conrad, Rick Keyser, Vickie Stegall, John Clayton Hinson, Alice Malone, and Rodney

Joyner. This time of fellowship and fun provided an opportunity for our new members to get to

know other church members and to learn of the many opportunities to participate in church life.

Easter is almost here! Hope you have had a chance to participate in the Lenten activities that have been taking place. Thanks to all who have participated, those who teach us at the Wednesday Lenten lunches, and those who take part in the dramatic presentations each Sunday morning. We have just a few weeks left in Lent so try to come if you can!

Route 456 had a fantastic bike ride this last month (minus one little mishap!) Thanks to Dan for helping us transport bikes and for following along in case anyone needed help. This coming month we are planning to go bowling, so check your emails for details as the time draws nearer.

Our annual Easter Egg Hunt will be Tuesday, April 11 from 3-5 p.m. Join us for some Easter fun involving crafts and an egg hunt. If you would like to bring candy to stuff the plastic eggs please do so by the morning of the 11th. Non-chocolate works best and doesn’t melt. Also, candy needs to be individually packaged. Parents don’t forget to bring Easter baskets!!
