First Sunday of Lent
Welcome, as we celebrate the Holy Eucharist on this First Sun-
day of Lent. As we begin this Solemn Penitential Season, we
are again reminded of the Church's traditional acts of Prayer,
Fasting and Almsgiving.
As we enter this new Liturgical season, we notice some changes
in the Church as well as her Liturgy. As we are aware, the Litur-
gical color for Lent is purple, which means the cloth on the
High Altar, as well as the Celebrants vestments and Deacons
stoles will display the color purple. The Tabernacle is also cov-
ered at this time with the beautiful cover that was specially made
for it last year. With the possible exception of Laetare Sunday,
flowers are not permitted in the Church. As we are accustomed,
outside of Laetare Sunday, there is no prelude or postlude at the
Eucharist.
As typical every year, the Scripture Readings focus heavily on
Jesus' temptation, initiated by Satan, in the desert. Very predicta-
ble hymns used on this Sunday are "Lord, Who Throughout
these Forty Days" and "Forty Days and Forty Nights". The text
of these two hymns well compliment the structure of these read-
ings and reinforce its strong message.
During this Holy Season, the Gloria is not sung, but is replaced
by the singing of the Kyrie Eleison (Lord, have mercy upon us).
The Lord's Prayer and the Doxology is sung in plainsong chant
form as well as the Great Amen sung in plainsong. The Ordinary
of the Mass will be the setting of the "Missa Simplex" in which
this congregation is most familiar and comfortable with.

Dear Parishioners,
I am most grateful to all of you for your kindness and generosity in 2020. Amid all the distractions of the pandemic and the ways our lives were twisted around, you cared for your parish in a loving way. I recognize the sacrifices so many of you are making in your ongoing financial support of our parish, allowing us to finish the year 2020 with a surplus. Please review the 2020 Financial Annual Report, along with the 2021 Budget, on the last page of this bulletin. Thank you so very much. Our Lady of Mount Carmel, pray for us in 2021.
Sincerely yours in Christ, Reverend Joseph V. Napolitano

Sister Ann’s Recipe...Mushroom ~Barley Soup 2 large onions, chopped 3 medium carrots, sliced 1/2 lb. mushrooms, sliced thin 4 cups low-sodium beef broth 1/4 cup chopped parsley 1/2 cup med-size barley 1/4 tsp. black pepper Place all the ingredients in a large heavy saucepan and bring to a boil over moderately high heat-about 4min. Adjust the heat so that the mixture bubbles gently, and simmer, partly covered, for 40 min or until the barley is tender. Serves 4. Variation: Mushroom-Barley Soup with Sweet Red Pep-per. Substitute 2 med size stalks of celery, sliced, for the carrots. Add 1/2 medium-size sweet red pepper, chopped, and proceed as directed. This nutritious soup is even more flavorful if made ahead of time and reheated just before serving.

Friday Evenings during Lent
7:00 PM in Church
The Stations will also be live streamed.
Lent offers us all a very special opportunity to grow in our relationship with God and to deepen our commitment to a way of life, rooted in our baptism. In our busy world, Lent provides us with an opportunity to reflect upon our pat-terns, to pray more deeply, experience sorrow for what we've done and failed to do, and to be generous to those in need.
Lenten Suggestions for Families from Sister Ann So often people think they have to give something up for Lent. It is far better to DO SOMETHING for Lent. Some suggestions.... For Adults: For Children: Don’t carry all the world’s pain on your own back. Thank God that you have a bed to sleep in at Yes, we must find and serve God in the poor and night and pray for those who are homeless. suffering. But never forget the overarching gift of Each day I will begin each day with prayer. God’s beauty and love. Let the Good Shepherd who loves the sheep, walk with you even in the dark valleys –and your step will grow lighter.
“We are the people of life because God, in
His unconditional love, has given us the Gospel of life…
and we are called to act accordingly.” ~ Saint John Paul
