Pre- School Home-Learning Suggested Activities for Thursday 28th May
Another Julia Donaldson favourite book is Stick Man. If you don’t have the book here is the animated film. https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b06t09rk/stick-man
And the illustrator reading the story here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OFhJrLVu3T0
After looking at the book/video talk about the different places that stick man travels to (park, river and beach) Find a stick and act out all the things that happen to him (this is great outside). Pretend to be a dog fetching a stick, attach some fabric or paper for a flag, pretend it’s a sword, a hook for a bag, a pen for making marks in the soil ( or sprinkle some sand or oats in a tray) Use it as a bat for a ball or balloon.
Put a few sticks in length order. You could talk about height being tall and short as well as length being long and short.
Use a few elastic bands or tape to make your own stick man. Perhaps take the Stick Man out for a walk or in the garden or round the house and see if he has any more adventures? E.g he gets stuck on high wall, played with by a cat?
Practice saying the refrain from the story
“I’m not a stick! Why can’t you see?
I’m stick man, I’m stick man, I’m stick man ,that’s me,
and I want to go home to my family tree”
Draw a tree together and ask your child to draw Stick man. Write the word Stick and leave three__ __ __ lines for your child to write man. Perhaps they can copy out the word stick aswell. The only letter they will not know is k but explain ck makes the same sound.
Please do as much or as little as is appropriate for your child. Enjoy, talk and learn together!
