FLUID BED DRYERS, COOLERS AND MOISTURIZERS
For bulk foods, pharmaceuticals, and chemicalson a laboratory or production scale
Bulletin FBD-08
Self-contained system with circular fluid bed processor
Kason fluid bed dryers, coolers, and moisturiz-ers employ an innovative circular processingunit which is inherently stronger, lighter, andless costly to build—and finish to sanitarystandards—than rectangular units havingequivalent surface area.
Because the circular fluid bed processor isalso more compact, complete fluid bed sys-tems can be pre-engineered and pre-configured on caster-mounted frames, readyfor installation and start up.
Moreover, Kason circular fluid bed processorsmaintain an unprecedented level of operat-ing efficiency across a wide range of modelsizes—from 18 to 84 inches (450 to 2125 mm)in diameter—for laboratory and pilot plant testing as well as batch or high-volume in-line drying, cooling, or moisturizing of bulkfoods, pharmaceuticals, and chemicals.
Greater performance in less spaceat lower cost than ever before possible
This pilot-plant-scale drying system incorporates a surge bin, rotary valve, 24” (600 mm) diameter fluid bed processor, heater, blower, and controls on a caster-mounted frame. Processors as small as 18” (450 mm) in diameter are offered forlaboratory applications.
This skid-mounted, turnkey dryer-screener system configures a 48-inch (1225 mm) fluid bed dryer and two-deck circular vibratory screener in series to dry proprietary chemical powder while removing undersize andoversize particles at the rate of 2000 lbs/h (907 kg/h). The screener is equipped with a bulk bag hanger andextended discharge spout to align with the bag intake spout, and magnetic ferrule to remove tramp metalfrom the finished product prior to packaging.
Moisture content of bulk catalyst is reducedfrom 9 to 1 percent at a continuous rate of 2000 lbs/h (900 kg/h) with this self-containeddrying system. It is comprised of a 48” (1225mm) fluid bed processor, heater, blower, andcyclone separator, as well as a top-mountedCENTRI-SIFTER® centrifugal screener for contin-uous de-agglomerating of incoming material.
With simple connections to an existing dust collector and power source, this fluidbed dryer system is ready to reduce themoisture content of boric acid from 10 to 0.5 percent on a batch basis. It combines a 40” (1000 mm) diameter fluid bed processor, heater, blower, and controller on a caster-mounted skid.

Fluid bed processors dry, moisturize, heat, or cool bulk solid material by causing it tovibrate on a screen or perforated surface within a rising column of heated, chilled, or moisturized air.
Continuous air flow and vibration separateand fluidize individual particles, maximizingthe surface area of material and, accordingly, the rate at which drying, moisturizing, heating or cooling can occur.
The vibratory motion of the processor alsoserves to convey the material along adefined pathway for uniform processing ona "first in/first out" basis, and to evacuate the fluid bed at the end of each cycle.
To prevent the uppermost layers of fluid bedparticles from being pulled into the exhauststream, the fluid bed exhaust plenum tapersoutward to a larger diameter than that of the fluid bed screen surface, reducing the airvelocity. For drying, cooling or moisturizingapplications that also requiring de-dustingof the material, exhaust plenums are cylin-drical instead of tapered, causing dust to be drawn from the fluid bed chamber to adust collection device. • Spraying systems for agglomerating
Configurations and accessories are available for scalping, de-dust-ing or de-agglomerating of materials while they are dried, cooled or moisturized, reducing or eliminating the initial and operatingcost of separate equipment.
Kason Fluid Bed Processors are also effective at agglomerating of bulk materials independent of or in conjunction with, drying, cooling or moisturizing operations as described below.
DE-DUSTINGFor drying, cooling or moisturizingapplications that also require de-dusting of the material, cylindricalexhaust plenums can be specified(instead of tapered plenums thatreduce air speed), causing fluidizeddust to be drawn from the fluid bedchamber into a cyclone or other dustcollection device, eliminating theneed for a separate de-dustingscreener.
SCALPINGFor scalping of oversize particlesfrom material before it is dried, cooled or moisturized, the fluid bedchamber can be fitted with an inte-gral, top-mounted screening deckthat derives its vibratory motionfrom the fluidizing chamber’s gyratory motors, significantly under-cutting the initial and operatingcosts of a stand-alone screener, while preserving floor space.
DE-AGGLOMERATINGMany materials that require fluid bedprocessing tend to form agglomer-ates that can reduce drying/cool-ing/moisturizing efficiency and/oruniformity of the finished product. Inthese instances, Kason fluid bed sys-tems can be equipped with integralCENTRI-SIFTER® centrifugal screen-ers for continuous de-agglomeratingof incoming material. (Far left page, bottom right).
AGGLOMERATINGKason Fluid Bed Agglomeratorsemploy a spraying system within thefluid bed chamber that introducesmoisture to powdered material as it isfluidized, causing particles to formagglomerates on a controlled basis.Fluid bed drying, cooling or moisturiz-ing can be employed concurrently tocondition the material, maximizingphysical characteristics of the agglom-erates as well as production efficiency.
Circular fluid bed processor outperforms traditional rectangular configurations
Kason offers free laboratory testing and/or rentals of fluid bed equipment for pilot plant testing.
The Kason test laboratory isequipped with fluid bed dryers, coolers and moisturizers as well asscreening, agglomerating and de-agglomerating equipment that arereadily configured to simulate cus-tom engineered systems integratedwith your new or existing process.
Using customer-supplied material,Kason laboratory technicians,
applications engineers and visitorscan verify system performance priorto equipment fabrication.
In addition, Kason frequently rentsfluid bed equipment for pilot planttesting, enabling customers to engineer entire processes in whichdrying, cooling or moisturizing is an integral part.
The Kason test laboratory controls and monitors all processing variables, optimizing equipment configurations according to each customer’smaterials and application parameters.
Higher strength-to-weight ratioInherently rigid, a Kason circular fluidbed processor does not require heavysteel sidewalls or cross braces to with-stand extensive vibration.
Smaller size rangeEight models range in diameter from18 to 84 inches (450 to 2125 mm) offering efficient performance across a range of small to moderate volumeapplications not satisfied by rectangu-lar units.
Lower sanitaryconstruction costA Kason circular fluid bed processoruses a lighter gauge shell and compo-nents, with fewer weld seams, andrequires only one air inlet and outletresulting in lower material and laborcosts—especially when finished to food, dairy, or pharmaceutical standards.
Faster, easier set upCompact and lightweight, a completeKason circular fluid bed system can beframe-mounted with casters for lowcost shipping, easy installation, and in-plant mobility.
Reduced engineering timeKason self-contained fluid bed systemsare lab tested using your material, engineered, and configured on a frameto ensure on-spec performance asdelivered.
Faster, easier cleaningWith no internal cross members, fewer seams and corners, and a quickdisconnect shell, a Kason circular fluidbed processor cuts cleaning time dramatically.
