An Invitation to the Arts Re-imagined There has been a revolution in the arts in Liverpool: an uprising of young people. We’re making a stand against our current image of those cute, fuzzy interns with our mousy voices and “fresh” ideas.

Flux Liverpool is a very real approach to making young people’s creative ideas a reality, to be enjoyed by curious audiences of all ages. We, a rag-tag collective of young professionals (crowned the ‘Flux Ambassadors’) have been busy working with some of the city’s best and brightest creative producers to bring you this three-week long celebration of budding new talent, aspiring business minds, and fresh eyes on the way things are run around here.

Our aim is not only to showcase the incredible talent lurking in Liverpool’s grassroots community, but also to educate everyone on the benefits of non-ageist creative collaboration. This city is already a shining testament to young entrepreneurialism, but we want to go even further.

Inside this guide you will find a myriad of events, workshops, panels, exhibitions, and performances across our great city of Liverpool. The best place to start would be The Hub – a beacon of knowledge in this whirlwind festival, and the most likely place to catch one of us Flux Ambassadors for a chat.

Flux Liverpool is your chance to discover your creative career, learn the inner workings of the industry, and begin partnerships with some of the biggest names in the region. Plus, there’s a whole treasure chest full of entertainment to be plundered – simply pick an event and check it out.

The revolution is just beginning, so grab your place amongst us and let’s give Liverpool’s arts community a leg-up! Enjoy.

Everyone deserves a chance to get heard – Unsigned, Unheard will provide a free digital platform for all undiscovered Liverpool-based musicians via a silent disco set-up at The Hub. Two iPad stations, complete with silent disco headphones, will be pre-programmed with recorded tracks/demos submitted to us by artists across the North-West. This opportunity allows independent artists across the region to list their work, but the power to be heard depends solely on you. Unsigned, Unheard will run for the duration of the festival, so come to The Hub – who knows? Perhaps you’ll uncover a hidden gem.

Liverpool’s Young People’s Festival will take place from 17 July to 2 August. In celebration of this we are offering the opportunity for schools, music groups, community choirs and orchestras of young people aged 14–25 to perform music, song, comedy and poetry in the Museum of Liverpool’s Atrium during this period. We are also delighted to offer pre-booked groups of 12 or more young people the opportunity to explore the musical, comedy and sporting History of Liverpool in a fun, interactive tour.

Deep in the heart of the forest, thirty young pioneers courageously set out to live by their ideals. They have 3 days to create a new society and need to choose 10 moral codes to live by. But what begins merely as a college exercise ultimately takes them to their emotional limits and changes their lives… forever. Directed and devised by Rachel Brogan with Bradley Thompson and 20 Stories High Youth Theatre.

Led by Tate Collective Liverpool, an ongoing youth art initiative, Blueprint Festival 2014 is a three day festival where young visitors can experience surprising encounters with art installations, music, spoken word, dance, theatre and a parade of living sculptures at Tate Liverpool and Liverpool city centre. Blueprint is the starting point for building a community of young creatives in the city and the region, interacting, exploring, making and experiencing art.

Blueprint is part of Circuit, a four-year national programme connecting 15–25 year olds to the arts in galleries and museums. Led by Tate and funded by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation, it provides opportunities for young people to steer their own learning and create cultural activity across art disciplines.

Throughout the weekend entry to Mondrian and his Studios is free for everyone under 25. Many of Mondrian’s best-known Neo-Plastic works will be exhibited, featuring his own instantly recognisable abstract style comprising of straight black lines and clearly defined blocks of primary colour. This bold, colourful, gridded style has directly influenced designers, architects and artists for generations. From Yves Saint Laurent’s iconic Mondrian Collection, which featured on the cover of French Vogue in 1965, to a recent collection by Alexander McQueen and the notable impact his work has had on modern architecture, Mondrian’s move into abstraction is sure to continue to inspire today’s creatives.

Young Everyman Playhouse present a modern twist on Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland, set in the rolling green lawns of Croxteth hall and Country Park. We find Alice all alone having become separated from her friends. Having gone through the rabbit hole, at a festival not too dissimilar to Glastonbury, Alice is adrift in a field full of hedonistic anarchists. Along the way she meets the Mad hatter, The White Rabbit and the Queen of Hearts, as well as many others. Three women plagued by reminders of their loves, decide to auction off the reminders of heartbreak in a tacky game show. At the heart of our acclaimed cultural and creative industries is a strong network of passionate people who want to collaborate with, learn from and create work with and for young people. Flux is a continuous change, passage, or movement and we see Flux Liverpool as an experiment and a vehicle for change.

We see major cultural venues & organisations in the city working with young people to curate, develop and participate in programmes to engage their peers, showcasing new and emerging local and international talent.

We want to handover the keys to culture and see what happens and in the mean time take some risks and learn along the way.

As we develop this movement we want to connect with education, youth initiatives and national and international partners to develop the creative future of Liverpool by investing in the creativity of our young people.

This first pilot year has been exhilarating! With investment from Arts Council, IdeasTap, Liverpool One, Curious Minds & somewhereto_. We’ve assembled our young producers group – the Ambassadors who have created, produced and given a name to Flux. We’ve opened up conversations between cultural organisations about artistic and creative programmes. This is just the beginning!

Flux Liverpool has been devised and commissioned by LARC (Liverpool Arts Regeneration Consortium) and programmed in collaboration with National Museums Liverpool, COoL (Creative Organisations of Liverpool) and a multitude of creatives from across the Liverpool City Region.

Flux Liverpool would not be possible without the enormous contributions of each partner organisation who have helped to make Flux Liverpool as ambitious as it is.

Huge thanks go to all of the wonderful and visionary organisations and artists detailed within this festival guide and our brilliant volunteers.
