Seat Ergonomics

Tegeltiller MMT Mining Services is happy to annouce that it has added the Tegeltiller to its range of products. Providing a robust lifting solution for pavers, tiles and slabs, we have had comments that the unit saves time and money, and helps make the job a whole lot easier.

Anywhere that a paver, slab or tile needs to be lifted, the Tegeltiller should be the tool of choice.

Utilising a simple vacuum seal system, the Tegeltiller provides a quick and easy method to lift pavers into position, or to remove them from existing work.

For larger jobs where two people need to be involved, the Duo Tegeltiller has been designed with two handles allowing larger material to be moved quickly and efficiently.

Using statistics drawn from the most recent census, the Australian Bureau of Statistics reported over 87,500 registered buses in Australia. Based on previous knowledge that 62% of buses on Australian roads have a capacity of less than 20 seats (small), 10% with a capacity of 21 to 40 seats (medium) and 28% with a capacity of 41 seats or more (large) we can make the following summaries : 54,000 small buses, close to 8,000 medium buses and 25,000 large buses operate on our roads.

If we think about the number of seats on each of these buses, it translates to a lot of people relying on this mode of transport. Looking closer into the industry itself, there are around 3,000 bus companies or private firms owning these 87,000 vehicles. In terms of the age of these vehicles, it is reported that there were 7,500 new buses delivered to the Australian market within the latest 5 year period, bringing with it revenue close to 3 billion dollars.

This sector employs approximately 10,000 people including service technicians and other sales and administrative staff. When examining figures across the total industry, the belief is there are over 50,000 people employed within the Australian bus industry.

When it comes to driving a truck, operating heavy earthmoving equipment, or transporting passengers by bus for hours on end, the ergonomic design of the seat that you work in is of the utmost importance.

Ergonomics has been defined simply as the study of work. More specifically, Ergonomics is the science of designing the job to fit the worker, rather than physically forcing the worker’s body to fit the job. Ergonomics draws on a number of scientific disciplines, including physiology, biomechanics, psychology, anthropometry, industrial hygiene, and kinesiology. In short it is a pretty detailed science.

Relating this back to our customers, many of them work within confined cabs for long periods of the day, so it is imperative that the products we supply are ergonomically fit for use. The design of our products pay special consideration to features such as seat shape, cushioning, vibration dampening, height adjustment control, seat backrest, lumbar support shape, resilience, height range and the backrest cushioning.

We are confident that the ISRI seats we supply set the benchmark in terms of ergonomics. To continue in our role to look out for the safety our customers, we are attending the Perth Ergonomics

Conference (Human Factors & Ergonomics Society of Australia) in December. This conference will ensure we keep abreast with the latest thinking and developments, ultimately leading to your benefit.

STAFF PROFILE

As most of you would know, MMT Mining Services is a family business, that has been in operation for over 21 years.

The business was started in 1992 by Garry Spouge, with a thought that he could “provide a better service, one that was faster, more reliable and just did whatever it takes to look after customer needs”.

Being the business owner, Garry has pretty much done every role from salesman to administration officer, to workshop manager to yardsman and more.

“In the early days to get things off the ground you would do any and everything,

but now we’re lucky to have a great team looking after things. We pride ourselves on being a family business so most of our staff are like family to us.”

In his spare time, Garry likes to follow MotoGP and race bikes himself, although he has slowed down somewhat recently due to an accident.

He also likes to spend time with the family and relax at some of the many concert events Perth puts on over Summer.

“I’m looking forward to the summer months and spending time with family, getting down the beach and even getting down to a few concerts around the place.”
