Nestled in the beautiful countryside of Myerstown, PA the Shank Door Company is happily celebrating 54 years of service within the community. With a variety of doors available to both residential and commercial clients the capability of Shank Door goes far beyond the products themselves. It is certainly not just doors that have propelled the deep-rooted success of this local business; with its origins in Harrisonburg, Virginia, when during the 1950’s a gentlemen named Ralph Shank began to sell and install garage doors. In that time the familiar and popular one piece, single slab, tilt garage door was predominant. With hard work, discipline and the heart of a true entrepreneur Ralph found success and after a short time in Baltimore, MD he moved in 1964 to Pennsylvania. Ralph continued his dedication to the garage door business in Pennsylvania and began selling doors out of the basement of his home with the humble beginnings of this company in excellence, superior labor, remarkable product and sincere customer service. The current location of Shank Door, was originally a farm belonging to his brother Aaron Shank and became the established site for business in 1973 only two years after taking on his first employee Ira Mast. In 1976 Ralph sold the business to Ira, as Ralph remained involved in some capacity following the transition. Ira continued in the course of distinction

set before him by Ralph growing the company competently and yielding growth. Despite a fire experienced in 1982 when the building burned, Ira persevered and rebuilt, despite any initial setback Shank Door did rebound and saw expansion that led to the construction of several additions as the company moved forward. While styles and the times have certainly changed from Ralph’s initial interest in doors, the market for quality, durability and function have not. Employing approximately 50 people Shank Door maintains the quality and hard work set forth by Ralph 54 years ago; providing installation, service and maintenance on preexisting or new construction to customers within the area, throughout the state and out of state. This commitment has earned them excellent reviews on Angie’s List as well as countless customer referrals. Cornwall Iron Furnace

One of Pennsylvania’s Trails of History sites, located in Lebanon County, is the significantly important Cornwall Iron Furnace Site. The furnace is the only surviving intact charcoal cold blast furnace and shows the importance of the great iron industry in this area. The furnace was established by Peter Grubb in 1742, when the area was still part of Pennsylvania’s frontier, suppling iron to blacksmiths and making household items such as cookware and stoves. During the American Revolution the furnace provided cannons and ammunition to George Washington’s army. In 1798 Robert Coleman took control of the furnace and established an iron dynasty. He was so successful he became one of Pennsylvania’s first millionaires. Coleman built homes for his workers and established villages of stores,

shops and churches. The iron furnace was a self-contained operation. All the necessary materials used in the process such as iron ore, limestone and charcoal, were found in abundance in the area. By 1883, anthracite coal became the favored fuel for newer furnaces and the iron furnace was abandoned. The ore mine, located just south of the furnace property remained in operation until 1973. In 1932, Coleman descendant, Margaret Coleman Freeman Buckingham, donated the property to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The Cornwall Iron Furnace was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1966. Today it is administered by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission. The Furnace is open for tours and special events are held on the site. For more information: www.cornwallironfurnace.org
