INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS FOR SUSTAINABLE ENERGY SUPPLY AND MANAGEMENT
A reliable and resilient supply of energy
is a key factor for social prosperity and
industrial competitiveness. Yet there are
many regions in the world lacking secure
supply options due to e. g. energy shortage
or high prices of local fuels.
To overcome those problems innovative
and customized supply solutions utilizing
state-of-the-art energy and communication
technologies have to be deployed. One
exemplary option is the use of microgrids.
Microgrids include multivalent solutions
integrating different types of energy, such
as electricity, heat or cold. They require so-
lutions with a high level of standardization
and interoperability as well as a detailed
analysis of the feasibility of such a system.
Fraunhofer ISE provides the technological
and energy system knowledge and can
assist with the development of business
models for technologies in the complex field
of reliable and resilient energy systems.

Techno-Economic Evaluation of
Renewable Energy Systems
Fraunhofer ISE takes a holistic approach to
developing local strategies for sustainable
and reliable energy supply, taking not only
the local supply but also the local provision
and value chains into account. To assist in
a secure and cost-optimized energy supply
we analyze renewable energy scenarios and
potentials. We help to schedule power plant
resources in order to optimize the use of
heat, electricity and storage:
n analysis of renewable energy potential
n power plant resource scheduling: uti-
lization of heat, electricity and storage
n renewable energy scenarios
n analyses of market design, stakeholders
and support mechanisms
n assessment of PV, CSP, wind energy
and storage as well as their applications
n technology analyses for investment
decisions
n strategies for industry development
n evaluation of R&D measures
n socio-economic analysis of local
value chains

Business Models
Decentralized energy supply and innovative
technological solutions are the basis of new
business concepts with win-win situations
for both service providers and customers.
We evaluate market and service opportuni-
ties and develop promising business solu-
tions by integrating technical opportunities
with market requirements. An analysis of
existing legal and regulative barriers rounds
up this service. Thus local added value can
be assessed and recommendations can be
given on how to maximize local benefits
with the lowest cost.
Technical Concepts
We focus on developed industrial regions
as well as rural areas with weak infra-
structures. The technology selection and
business cases take into account short
term needs and long term development
trends regarding technology or societal
preferences (like sustainability). Our tech-
nical solutions are accompanied by social
science studies to secure acceptability and
manageability of new approaches.
Simulation of Energy Systems and
Management of Microgrids
We use a prediction and optimization
software framework to simulate energy
systems and assess demand and supply of
microgrids with high resolution. This is the
basis for the development of operation
strategies for decentralized storage and
generation units. Detailed mappings of all
components and yearly simulations lead to
implementable control concepts integrating
hydraulic aspects if relevant.
Operation Control
Electricity supply from the grid and local appli-
ances needs to be resilient against unexpected
external impacts – both technical and human-
caused. For the identification, short-term com-
pensation and final restauration of the supply
we apply innovative management solutions
like MPC (model predictive control), reactive
power control, islanding mode, reserve power
characteristics and others to prevent blackout
situations.
Cooperation with Customers
We offer our customers various types of ser-
vices: studies and simulations, workshops and
training at Fraunhofer ISE or on-site, project
accompaniment, monitoring and development
of hardware and software components. By
integrating our competence and tools with
the specific customers‘ requirements we
develop complex and lasting solutions for
reliable energy supply.
