At least there is hope for a tree: if it is cut down, it will sprout again, and its new shoots will not fail. Its roots may grow old in the ground and its stump may die in the soil, yet at the scent of water it will bud and put forth shoots

like a young plant. – Job 14:7-9

M y favorite thing about Lent is that it signals both an end and a

beginning. On this side of Lent, we’re coming into the home stretch of winter. If you’re like me, you’re paying very close attention to how much more daylight we get each evening and, even if you hate daylight saving’s time taking that hour away in the morning, you’re excited about the potential for more daylight (can you tell I really, really like light?). By the time we get to the other side of Lent, we will be in spring. Slowly, our world will turn green again. And then other colors will emerge: all the yellows, purples, pinks, reds, and blues. Lent is the season when we prepare for the changes not just in creation, but in ourselves as well.

At least, the plants that aren’t left in my care will bloom. My mother-in-law gave me a plant once and told me it would be nigh-impossible to kill it. My black thumb took one look at that Wandering Jew and said, “challenge accepted.” Sure enough…well, RIP, plant. My mother-in-law also gave me a handful of what she called “air moss” which has been in a fishbowl jar for about

nine years without any change. So, either I actually haven’t killed this plant or she gave me a fake plant and I’m too proud to ask her if she’s pulling my leg.

I’m not a gardener, but I do like flowers (though my allergies are not a huge fan). I do like watching things grow, and I do take it personally when the deer come in my yard and eat my hostas. But watching things grow gives me hope. The Lenten season of watching winter turn into spring reminds us of how Jesus comes into the winter of our lives and breathes new life through our lungs again. It is like a barren tree that, at the scent of water, will start to bloom again. That is the hope of Easter.

Our theme for this year’s lent is “Cultivating and Letting Go.” Using visual art, poetry, and devotions, we’ll spend most of Lent thinking about what it means to cultivate our faith. From the faith-based group Sanctified Art that provided our Lenten materials this year:

“Lent is a season of spiritual gardening, of inviting God to unearth in us what lies fallow, what needs to be tended, and what needs to die for new life to emerge.” Each week of Lent you’ll have a chance to reflect on a piece of art work, a poem, and a devotion. We’ll offer a weekly prayer service where we’ll practice visio divina or “divine seeing.” As we read scripture in worship, be thinking about what is being cultivated and what is being let go. Think about the characters in the narratives and reflect on what God is calling you to cultivate or let go of.

There are activity pages for children and devotionals for families or individuals. I hope you’ll take advantage of this place for creative energy. In this newsletter, find dates and times for the Lenten prayer services and the Holy Week schedule. You’re invited to come and breathe. You’re invited to come and see. And you’re invited to come and simply be.

Simply in His common calling,

Pastor Becki

Lent...2019

O ur theme for Lent 2019 is “Cultivating and Letting Go.” Using resources from the group The Sanctified Art, we are exploring what must be cultivated within

Worship: Visual Monitor System -update

I t’s hard to believe we are approaching the six year anniversary of the Faith Visual Monitor System! While this presentation tool has enhanced our worship experience

in a number of ways, there remains one piece of the design yet to be installed: the sanctuary back wall confidence monitor.

This third monitor will function as a means for allowing choir and worship participants to see that which is displayed on the main chancel screens without having to turn their heads. In the case of the pastor, worship assistant or presenter, this helps them keep in touch with the congregation and ensure a smoothly flowing service. Placement is planned for the center gap in the sound absorption panels above the main doors. Your efforts to ‘FILL THE GAP’ via contribution to the FPC Visual Monitor System Fund (account #8815) are greatly appreciated!

Other Worship News

A  new sanctuary sound board has just been installed and promises to bring greater capacity and flexibility for quality sound demands going forward. In

addition, a follow up sound analysis was conducted, which we hope will validate the effectiveness of the new sound panels. Lastly, a new hearing assist system has been installed which provides better sound, AND gives you the option of choosing your own connectivity device (see Jim Robinson for details). We are extremely grateful for the generous contributions which have made these enhancements possible!

Kingfisher Faith

I n a video on his publisher’s website, Eugene Peterson tells of watching a kingfisher repeatedly dive for fish in a lake. Peterson counted 37 dives before the kingfisher

caught its supper! “And he’s the king fisher!” Peterson chuckles. From that bird-watching episode, he gleaned a ministry lesson: It may take a long time and many attempts — maybe dozens! — before something works out.

God calls us to live out His love faithfully, even when we don’t seem to be accomplishing anything. Maybe we extend 36 invitations to worship, work 36 monthly shifts at a food bank or utter 36 prayers without seeing results. “What’s the point?” we wonder. But the kingfisher urges us on: “Maybe number 37 is the charm!”

In the words of St. Paul (and mixing fishing and farming metaphors): “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up” (Galatians 6:9, NIV).

This is your Captain speaking Ushering Captain that is...I (We) are

in need of a few good USHERS like yourself, for the month of April. April is a great month to usher! Why?... you anxiously ask. Well, there are so many grand opportunities such as Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and of course two triumphant services on Easter Sunday (April 21), plus the remaining Sundays in April.

Just call or see me ASAP to reserve your spot as an usher on the day of your choice! Everyone is welcome, veteran ushers as well as rookies - it's not difficult. Families may want to usher together, or you may want to contact another member to usher together. Also ideal for members who have recently joined. I encourage you to contact me ASAP with your choice. THANK YOU in advance for serving.

S o far this year, the Session has met for just one official meeting (thanks to Mother Nature!), but we have our committee assignments and we have had leadership

training (with the Deacons) led by Pastor Becki. We are currently a group of eleven, due to the move of Rob Clark out of state.

We approved the 2019 budget, which includes about a $25,000 projected deficit for the year. Some new equipment in the church includes a replacement water heater and a replacement computer for our Administrative Assistant. Sadly, we lost our oldest church member, Bunny Ashcraft, on January 8th. Our Mission Committee has mapped out a full year of fundraising and events to benefit our community (near and far), which began with the Souper Bowl of Caring in early February.

Highlights from our meetings are communicated in Announcement e-mails, and are posted on the bulletin board outside of Fellowship Hall.

Church Calendar...it’s more than just a schedule

D id you know that you can click on events on the church’s online calendar and find out more about an event you are interested in? It is a feature that is available to

us through our website, and we are beginning to put it to use.

When information is provided about an event, it is added to the “information” part of the event. It then shows up when the event is clicked on. But there’s more! If you are using a computer, hover the mouse arrow over the event, and a cute little dropdown box shows up with the same information! When using a mobile device, one tap on an event will give you the little box, and two taps will open the event.

So, if you are asking for an event to be scheduled, please consider providing a blurb or more about your event...whatever you’d like your end user to see. And if you are calendar user, try it to see how it works! And as always, if you have any questions, Lynda is willing to help find answers.

Improved Prayer Communication!

A summary of all Joys and Concerns lifted up during Worship is now being distributed through our Prayer Chain e-mail system. So, if you missed Worship or didn’t quite

hear what was being said, please know that the information will be e-mailed to you early in the week.

If you are not on the Prayer Chain e-mail distribution list, please contact the church office to be added.

As always, prayers may be sent to [email protected], or through the form on the church website (https://faithchurchemmaus.org/contact-us/prayer-requests/).

What is the 30 Hour Famine? Students around the world loving God and fighting hunger. We will grow closer to Christ and each other as we fast together for 30 hours and raise

funds to fight hunger. What’s more, when we do the Famine we are being challenged to be part of something bigger than ourselves. To take action for God’s kingdom. To help save the lives of hungry kids. To permanently change the way we see the world. How the Famine works

Our youth group has signed up for our own famine date: March 15-16. During the famine, students learn about hunger and fundraise to help feed and care for children living in poverty. On Famine weekend, students get up close and personal with hunger by going 30 hours without food. World Vision provides loads of activities to help make this a totally fun, educational, and life-changing experience. The donations you send in after the Famine will be used to change lives.

The 30 Hour Famine will be at Faith Church on Friday, March 15-Saturday, March 16. We will meet at Faith on Friday at 6:00pm, and we finish at 7:00pm Saturday. We sleep overnight at the church, and have a great night learning together and supporting one another as we fast together.

Presbyterian Youth Triennium Calling all youth who will be entering high school as freshmen through graduated seniors!

!!70TH ANNIVERSARY!!

One Great Hour of Sharing HUNGER – DISASTER - DEVELOPMENT

OGHS, started in 1949, is one of the oldest ecumenical efforts in raising funds for the betterment of communities. What started as an hour-long radio appeal has evolved into the most participated Special Offering in the PCUSA. 60% of the congregations participate and projects supported by the OGHS reach more than 100 countries.

A gift to One Great Hour of Sharing enables the church to share God’s love with our neighbors-in-need around the world by providing relief to those affected by natural disasters, provide food to the hungry, and helping to empower the poor and oppressed.

Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (32% of offering)  Presbyterian Hunger Program (36% of offering)  Self-Development of People (32% of offering)

Faith Presbyterian Church will receive the One Great Hour of Sharing offering on Palm Sunday, April 14. In 2018, we received $6967.77. Do we think we can increase this in 2019?

At Work SELF-DEVELOPMENT OF PEOPLE (SDOP)

“Self-Development of People (SDOP) enters into partnerships with community groups of low-income people that want to change their lives and communities. SDOP receives and reviews grant applications year round.

Presbyterian Committee on the Self-Development of People is a ministry that affirms God’s concern for humankind. We are Presbyterians and ecumenical partners dissatisfied with poverty and oppression, united in faith and action through sharing, confronting, and enabling by participating in the empowerment of economically poor, oppressed, and disadvantaged people, seeking to change the structures that perpetuate poverty, oppression and injustice.

SDOP Core Strategies: Promote Justice

Build stronger communities Seek economic equity

Daybreak Outreach

F aith Church cooks and serves a meal at Daybreak on the second Monday of each month, from 1:30 to 4:30pm. Over the past couple of years, we’ve lost many of

our cookie bakers. Can you find the time to bake a batch or two and drop them off by noon on that day?

Daybreak is a drop-in center for people suffering from mental illness, who may or may not also be homeless.

Helpers are also needed, especially cooks, from approx. 1:30 to 4:30pm. (Carpool leaves from the church!)

Drop off cookies in the church kitchen by noon of that Monday. Because of possible nut allergies, please mark cookies that have nuts in them. Sugar-free cookies are also appreciated.

Please consider helping out. A Volunteer Guide has been put together to make it easy for those who wonder what volunteering entails. The book can be found on the bookshelf behind the secretary’s desk in the church office. If you have questions needing the human touch, speak to Carolyn Baittinger or Zona Farmer.

The upcoming dates for Daybreak are: March 11, April 8, May 13

Info needed

W e invite you to our Trades of Hope (TOH) party night on April

24 at 7:00 PM. You may remember Krista from our Holiday bazaar. Trades of Hope sells items created by artisans around the world. Their mission is to help women out of poverty by creating a sustainable income. TOH works with the artisans themselves and with organizations that are helping women in difficult circumstances. They sell products

like jewelry, scarves, baskets, journals, ornaments etc. By marketing their products, TOH helps these women put food on their table, a roof over their heads, get medical attention and an education for their children. Watch the weekly Faith Life and the Women of Faith Facebook page for more information. Hope to see you there. This party = fun with a mission.

The Women of Faith are requesting input for renting tables for this year’s bazaar (December 7, 2019). We have been borrowing tables from Joe Payea and a local church. Between Joe who drops them off and picks them up (thank you very much) and Faith Church we still don’t have enough tables. This has become a physical challenge for us and so are considering renting tables with

delivery and pickup options. If anyone has any ideas or information concerning renting tables with pickup and delivery we would appreciate the help or contact info. You can contact anyone on the WOF committee. Dianne Macdonald, Yvonne Stauffer, Sandy Gingrich, Zona Farmer, Sue Lawall, Carolyn Baittinger. Or leave the info in the office in our mailbox.

Give thanks in all circumstances

I Thessalonians 5:18

T he words Thank You are two very powerful and motivating words. They let us know when we are doing things right, and that we are appreciated. They can

never be overused! Whenever notes are received, we try to make sure that our church members get to read them. Here is what was received since the last newsletter:

“It is with sincere appreciation that this letter is sent to you on behalf of the residents of Presbyterian Senior Living. Since our beginning in 1927, with a single home in Newville, we continue to provide housing and health care to the aging. As the Home service area has expanded over the years, we are grateful for the ever increasing Christian love and concern shared by our church congregations. Many of the residents at our communities have been members of Presbyterian churches. Your gifts go directly to help provide charitable care for those individuals who have either outlived their own personal resources, or who are without sufficient fund to pay for the cost of their care.

The ministry of Presbyterian Senior Living, being similar to that of the church, is to provide for the needs of individuals, whether they are financial, physical, psychological, or spiritual. We want to thank you for your gift of $500 for Westminster Village, and we ask that you remember the residents and staff in your prayers.”

Appreciatively,

Stephen Proctor, President & CEO

“TOGETHER WE CAN CREATE A BETTTER US

The Y is a positive force in this community. Together, we take on the challenges that shape the Lehigh Valley’s future. From tacking the achievement gap, to teaching healthy habits for a lifetime, to warming our homeless neighbors in the cold winter months, everything the Y does is in service of building a better us. Every day, our community faces new obstacles that create a greater need for the work we do. Y donors, volunteers, members, and partners like you make the

difference. Because you believe in the power of collective community action, you make a better us possible.

On behalf of the Greater Valley YMCA, Allentown Branch, thank you for your generous donation of $200 in support of our new Warming Station. As we embark on this new chapter in Allentown, the outpouring of support for this new endeavor is moving. We know the road ahead is paved with the generosity of engaged citizens like you.

After more than 100 years of service to the Lehigh Valley regions, the Y knows that our community is stronger together. Day in and day out, we are here to provide the resources needed by our neighbors to learn, grow and thrive together. Everything the Y does is in service of making us—as individuals and a community—better.

For a better you. For a better community. For a better country.

The Y.™ For a better us.

Thank you for helping keep our neighbors warm this holiday season. God bless!”

With gratitude,

Kate Cohen, Chief Development Officer

“We give thanks to you for your support of Special Offerings, our collective

witness to the love of Jesus Christ. By participating in Special Offerings, your congregation joins other churches to change lives around the world—through ministries of compassion, advocacy, development, peacemaking, Christian formation, education and witness.

Thank you for the following support to Special Offerings: On December 10, 2018, we received $1,223.59 for the Peace and Global Witness Offering. Your congregation’s gift, when combined with that of others, will share the love of Christ with those in need.

Again, thank you for giving to enable all people to know God’s life-giving welcome in Jesus Christ. You are a valued partner in mission. Please let me know how we can support your efforts.

With gratitude to God for our shared mission.”

We are able to use these funds to help support families around the holidays with Christmas gifts and groceries.

As always, your donation to our Angel Network will be extremely helpful to us as we strive to meet the needs of the Lincoln families who are less fortunate. Thank you for your thoughtfulness and continued generosity!”

The comfort of our middle-C God D uring college, while living in a boarding house, author Lloyd Douglas befriended

a retiree. The man, a homebound former music teacher, shared a morning ritual with Douglas, who would walk down to the man’s floor, open his door and ask, “What’s the good news?” Every day the man responded by tapping a tuning fork against his wheelchair and saying, “That’s middle C. It was middle C yesterday. It will be middle C tomorrow. It will be middle C a thousand years from now. The tenor upstairs sings flat, the piano across the hall is out of tune, but, my friend, that is middle C!” If middle C’s pitch value isn’t exactly 261.63 Hz, then your piano needs to be tuned. How comforting that dependability is for musicians — and their listeners. Like middle C, God is steadfast and reliable. In this fast-paced world, praise God for the good news he declares to us: “I the LORD do not change” (Malachi 3:6).

SCRIP Program

T hank you to all who participate in the Great Lakes SCRIP and Weis gift card programs. Session has yet to indicate where they will direct these funds in 2019.

That information will be shared as it is provided. Please help this program continue to provide funds to the church by making purchases using SCRIP.

The total amount raised so far in 2019 is $29.75. The next deadlines are March 10. April 14, and May 12. Faith Church uses the scrip fundraising program, allowing church members to

raise money for the church. Scrip is just another way to pay for everyday purchases using gift cards in place of cash, checks, and credit cards.

You simply purchase gift cards from the church at face value. The cards are then ordered by the church’s Scrip coordinator at a reduced price. The difference is an instant rebate for the church, which is then used to defray the costs of items that Session has approved of in advance. In the past, the rebates have helped to pay for blacktop repair and lighting improvement.

Help the church make this program a bigger success!! For a complete list of retailers or for more information check the table in the Fellowship Hall or visit www.glscrip.com. Contact Lynda Scheirer at [email protected] if you have any logistical questions.

27

A little more about SCRIP

W hen we began the SCRIP Program several years ago, there were many more participants than we currently have. What do you need to know to convince

you to make this a part of your giving to the church? As the SCRIP coordinator, Lynda Scheirer would like to help make the program a bigger success. The amount raised, listed above, is the result of a very small group of dedicated participants. If just a few more would hop on the bandwagon, we could easily double or triple the amount.

Example: If one person purchases a $100 gift card from a vendor giving the church a 10% reduced price, it’s an instant rebate to the church in the amount of $10. If ten people do it, it’s $100. If that happens every month, it’s $1,200!

Now, most vendors provide rebates in lower percentages. But, every penny counts! Why not give it a try this month and see how easy it is? A list of retailers has been posted online, or you can click on the quick link at the bottom of the page at this website and open the retailer list.

Let’s do this! Together!

The Magnitude of God’s Love

I t would be spectacular and amazing ... if some king’s son were to appear in a beggar’s home to nurse him in his illness, wash off his filth and do everything else

the beggar would have to do. Would this not be a profound humility? Any spectator or any beneficiary of this honor would feel impelled to admit that he had seen or experienced something unusual and extraordinary, something magnificent.

And yet the love of the Son of God for us is of such magnitude that the greater the filth and stench of our sins, the more He befriends us, the more He cleanses us, relieving us of all our misery and of the burden of all our sins and placing them upon his own back.

Whenever the devil declares: “You are a sinner!” Christ interposes: “I will reverse the order; I will be a sinner, and you are to go scotfree.” Who can thank our God enough for this mercy?

Putting liquid in the trash often results in trickling stains as trash bags are carried through the church to be placed outside. Please dump liquids in a sink before discarding your cups.

The church recycles plastic, glass bottles, tin & aluminum cans. We do not recycle If you require police involvement while at the church, please keep the following in mind. Issues on church property or on Second Street fall under the jurisdiction of the State Police from the Upper Macungie barracks. Issues on Cherokee Street are under the jurisdiction of the Emmaus Police. Please tell them that we are at 3002 N. Second Street in Emmaus.

aluminum foil, paper cups or foam products. Please put only the items listed above into the recycling bin by the kitchen sink.

If you call the church early on a Sunday morning, your message may not be retrieved until Monday.

“Someone else” never takes home the kitchen towels for laundering. Feel encouraged to do so when you are involved in clean-up.

Did you know that our big field is part of the Lehigh County Emergency Management Plan? The field is large enough for helicopters to land on for evacuations or transporting people from an evacuation site to Emmaus. Very interesting!

When Fellowship Hall and/or the kitchen are not in use, all of their doors should be kept closed to contain a fire, should one occur.

There is a sign-up chart (for serving communion) on the bulletin board right outside of the office storage closet. Any resting or standing elder or deacon may sign up whenever there are openings.

If you need cleaning supplies, the janitor’s closet is always open and available. The counter in the church office is a work space. When you place baskets, boxes

and bags on the counter, they are in the way of the weekly work flow. Please find other places for their placement, and let those who are picking them up know where to look.

Faith Church has “Key Guardians” who hold keys for members’ use when the church is not open; John Baittinger and Bruce Kunkle.

There is a lost and found box in the narthex, by the coat rack, where there is also a collection of coats, hats, etc. that have been forgotten.
