Dear Friends,
The one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world
(1 John4:4)
This message is being shared with you on the first day of Lent. What does Lent mean for
you? If you came from a traditional religious background, you might have had ashesplaced on your forehead. You may have refrained from eating favorite foods, sweets, or
participating in your customary pleasurable activities and returned to them on Easter Sunday.
However, in Unity we understand the season of Lent from a deeper perspective. As Charles Fillmore, co-founder of
Unity said Lent is a season of spiritual growth, a time for progressive unfoldment. When we can blend and merge our
mind with God-Mind, the way is open for the Lord to glorify us and lift us into a higher, purer, more spiritual state.
You may have the questionHow do I get lifted into a purer, more spiritual state? Each time you become aware of
your thoughts and realize that you are being mesmerized by outer facts and overcome by their seeming power, pray,
and, come back to the Truth that your identity is Divine.
Lent is a holy, sacred time40 days metaphysically is interpreted as exactly the right amount of time for you to
enter into a new contract with yourselfto prepare your own rising. It is the opportunity to start anew on your spiritual
journeymoment by moment to have mastery over thoughts. Your rising into spiritual awareness is heightened with
prayer, study and meditation. In addition, I suggest creating a new vision with a new spiritual practice. Write a grati-
tude list, or tithe your time, talent or treasure. Feed your soul by creating an altar, play peace-filled music, light a can-
dle or chant your favorite affirmations. You will no longer want to be pushed by pain but pulled by the vision of your
True Identitythe Christ!
HAVE A BLESSED EASTER!
With Love,
Rev. Joanne

"Meditation is to be aware of what is going on: in your body, in
your feelings, in your mind, and in the world." - Thich Nhat Hanh.
There are various forms of meditation in this tradition, such as sit-
ting, walking, eating and mindful reading and discussing. As a
practice of awareness in sitting meditation, one stops, is still, calm-
ing the mind and body. From a quiet, still place one can gain
insight into a deeper understanding of patterns of thinking and
feeling which affect our life. With some practice, this can lead to
a growing capacity to be present to oneself and to the world. We
are fortunate to meet with a community of friends who supporteach other toward a greater sense of peace and well-being. We
welcome anyone who is interested in joining us. The contact per-
son is Judy Weaver, [email protected].

Do you struggle over daily prayer? Are thereasons because you cant dedicate thetime, cant sit still, or dont find any benefitfrom daily prayer?
If you experience these common obstaclesto daily prayer practice, i. e. time restraints, restlessness and misguided expectation,
join us to learn a step-by-step way to havea more meaningful connection with theAbsolute. As Myrtle Fillmore, co-founder ofUnity said, Prayer is the most effectivemethod of renewal and transformation, because in prayer (we) associate with Godand not with the problem.

Message fromthe President
Upon completion of research
conducted by Chuck Pettis
from Brand Solutions in
2009, Unity Worldwide Ministries
(UWM) launched the Unity IdentityProject. Many people have believed
that Unity is the Best Kept Secret.
How many of us say we wish we found Unity earlier in life.
I know I did! UWM wants to get that secret out. They found
that each Unity ministry is individual and unique in expression
but all are based on the same Five Principles. Therefore, UWM
wanted to create cohesion among Unity ministries, UWM home
office and Unity World Headquarters at Unity Village.
There is a growing section of the populationpeople who
dont belong to a specific spiritual community but who identify
with Unitys spiritual beliefs. Surveys were created, both inter-
nally within the Unity movement and externally to gather feed-
back on words, language, color schemes, etc., and the UWM
logo was created. Research results can be found at
unity.org/branding.
By creating visibility through branding, we can reach those
who are seeking a spiritual home. Just as a certain fast food
restaurant uses the Golden Arches logo to attract those who
are physically hungry, our logo, a blue globe, can be sought out
by those who are spiritually hungry. Our Board voted and
agreed to take part in the Unity Identity Project, which began in
October 2011. We will use the branding techniques created for
UWM. Under the new UWM logo will appear our name, Unity
by the Shore, with the tagline A Spiritual Community.
A sign with our new name and logo will be our most visiblepiece of publicity to attract those seeking to experience the
dynamic, loving community that is Unity by the Shore. We
anticipate installation will take place around the third week of
March. Our website is also being redesigned and updated. I
hope you like the new logo, sign and website!
With love,
Sandi Robertson

Unity ProvidesSafe Haven For
LongtimeMember
By Flo Higgins
Patricia Loughney is a famil-
iar figure at Unity by the
Shore. She calls Unity hersecond home and treats it like her first by serving and loving
everything about Unity.
The tall blonde Patricia has faced many personal chal-
lenges including the death of her two day old baby, the
heartache of divorce, and her recent bout with cancer.
And through it all it was, according to Patricia, My deep
faith in God and my spiritual life at Unity that brought methrough it much wiser and with a deeper faith in God.
With Unity I was able to handle each challenge in mylife with the wisdom offered by the teachings of Unity,
Patricia said.
Patricia grew up Catholic, but she said, I have found my
real spiritual faith in Unity and its philosophy.
She was introduced to Unity by her long ago friend, thelate Joyce Nelson, who told her of the services and then
introduced her to the church, which at that time was located
in Asbury Park. That was over a two decades ago when the
Rev. Al LaBrec was minister.
Patricia was able to take dozens of classes with Rev. Al
and started her church service during his tenure here. She
served on the Board of Trustees twice, has been an Usher, isa member of the Prayer Team and is a Sunday morning
Greeter.
She was chair of the Hospitality Ministry for six years and
is well known in the kitchen and for supervising the Sunday
social hour. This is a role she recently left and is now look-
ing to serve in another area of the ministry.Last Fall she was chair of the Annual Yard Sale. Patricia
knows the meaning of service not only at her church but also
in her career.
She started her career as a teacher at Keyport High
School. For the past 25 years she has worked in Eatontown
for the U.S Department of Labor as a Training Counselor. In
that role Patricia trains people to either add to their job skillsor develop new skills.
Her record of service is awesome and continues as she
looks to new areas where her talent can be used here at
Unity.
But above all is her sincere love of Unity and its meaning
in her life. Patricia is quick to point out, Unity came into my
life at a very stressful time. And my faith in God has taughtme that each experience includes a spiritual lesson. Unity
has allowed me to learn the lessons of faith, love and com-
passion. I am so grateful.

Lots of newsfrom Childrens
Church
Patricia Loughney O
ur Children's church is growing thanks to our new vol-
unteers.
They are Charles Boyer, Mary Phillips and Kelly Tomblin
They will be joining James Wilson to create our new Uniteens
group, which starts in March!
How awesome that we now have 3 age groups! Unitots which
is lead by Patrice DeVincentis. She is so wonderful with the lit
tle ones.
Unikids will be lead by Lindy Stork and myself. We look for
ward to starting our Harry Potter curriculum based on Truth
principles and the first four Harry Potter movies. The curricu-
lum is designed to assist the children into taping into the
"magic" that exists within them.
Uniteens will be using, Bring on the Basics, which is a
Uniteens curriculum based on Unity's five Basic Principles.
Children's Choir is making beautiful music together at 10:00
a.m. every Sunday. Thanks Laura Dubois, Geoff Hipschman
and Lyell Gressitt. Great job!
We are also looking forward to Palm and Easter Sunday with
our annual Easter Egg hunt and Easter Hat parade.
A special thanks goes out to BJ Lennox who taught on Sunday
February 19 all about rocks and stones. She tied the lesson onrocks together with the theme of the month for February, which
is Love. The children left with their own bag of stones and a
stone heart necklace. Each necklace was individual and unique
just like them. We loved it and BJ rocks!
If anyone has a talent or something that really inspires them and
would like to share it with the children, please see me. We are
so blessed to have such wonderful, talented, loving people co-
creating with our Youth! It is because of our volunteers that our
Youth program is growing and thriving and we thank you all!
Love and Blessings to all, Sally Kurth
