New Delhi International AirportHailed as the modern Gateway of India, the T3 Terminal at the Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi, is ranked the fourth best airport in the world. This world-class infrastructure project was executed by L&T Construction in a record time of 39 months to coincide with the inauguration of the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games. The project involved concept enhancement, design, procurement and construction. The scope of work involved construction of an additional runway, taxiways, aprons, new terminal building – T3 for international and domestic passengers with all international standard state of the art specialist airport systems. The project enhanced the traffic handling capacity of the airport from the existing 12 Mppa level to 37 Mppa.

L&T Construction executed the green-field Rajiv Gandhi International Airport at Hyderabad for Hyderabad International Airport Limited owned by GMR Group, Malaysia Airports Holding Berhad, Government of Andhra Pradesh and the Airports Authority of India.Hyderabad international airport has been named amongst the world’s top five in the annual Airport Service Quality (ASQ) passenger survey along with the ones at Seoul, Singapore, Hong Kong and Beijing. In 2010, Hyderabad airport was ranked among the top airports of the world in the airport services quality (ASQ) by the global body, Airports Council International (ACI).
The company’s scope of work involved designing and building of the Passenger Terminal Building and other Airside works including Taxiways, Runways. The seven level Passenger Terminal Building has an area of 1.12 million sq.ft. Airside works involved construction of 4.26 km long runway, 75 m ATC tower including developing many other infrastructures. Landside works include construction of a 75 m ATC tower, cargo terminal, associated buildings and facilities.

L&T Construction is presently executing the Chatrapathi Shivaji International Airport at Mumbai for the Mumbai International Airport Limited owned by GVK Airport Holdings Pvt. Ltd., ACSA Global Ltd., Bid Services (Mauritius) Ltd. and Airports Authority of India. The project is termed as one of the most complex airport projects in the world as airport expansion is being done amidst an existing operational airport without disrupting the air traffic services. The company is engaged in planning, designing, engineering, procurement, construction, testing and commissioning of the airport and its facilities on EPC basis. The existing airport site is landlocked by the surrounding city. The biggest challenge of this brownfield project is to construct the new terminals, runways and other facilities on the existing locations by dismantling in a phased manner and simultaneously supplementing the facilities without impacting ongoing operations. On completion, the airport will be capable to handle 40 Mppa of traffic and 1 million tonnes of cargo.

L&T Construction executed the Greenfield Bengaluru International Airport on EPC contract for Bangalore International Airport Limited owned by Siemens, GVK Unique Zurich Airport, Airport Authority of India and Govt. of Karnataka. The airport is built to handle a traffic volume of 11.5 Mppa with full compliance to ICAO standards and recommendations. The scope of work included: Passenger Terminal Building (77,110 sq.m ), ATC tower (65.25m tall) design and the construction of Façade works , state-of-the-art in-line Baggage Handling Systems with 9 carousels for baggage retrieval, a unique ‘S’ shaped precast concrete Roof Element used in the roof of the passenger terminal building each measuring 24m long and weighing 100 tones, 9 boarding bridges, and much more. Airside and Landside works included B747 compliant runway of 4000m length, taxiway system with one parallel taxiway and 3 rapid exits, aircraft aprons designated for passenger terminal and three cargo terminals, isolation bay and airport wide service systems, AGL lighting to CAT 2 standards, landside facilities, etc.

The company is constructing an integrated terminal building with a built up area of 40,000 sq.m and a passenger capacity of 2.5 Mppa. In addition to the main works, L&T Construction is also entrusted with the construction of an elevated corridor, a service yard, a service tunnel, roads and pavements and a car park.
The terminal be equipped to handle 1,100 domestic and 500 international passengers at any given time and will have three aerobridges in the first stage of the project.

L&T Construction has been entrusted with the Airside and Landside works for the new Greenfield Airport at Sindhudurg. The scope of work comprise construction of the Passenger Terminal Building (PTB), the Air Traffic Control Tower, a new Runway 3450 m long catering to Code-D aircraft, concrete hard stands for three aircraft parking and other supporting structures and ancillary work.
Major tasks for the airside include earthwork, concrete pavement, asphalt pavement with markings and drainage. The built up area of the Passenger Terminal building area is approx. 9500 sq.m. The project scope also includes aircraft fuel hydrant system, storm and portable water distribution line, chilled water distribution system, medium voltage distribution sub-stations, communication network and fire main distribution system

L&T Construction has rendered the design and executed the construction of a terminal building and a control tower along with an airstrip for Sri Sathya Sai Central Trust.

L&T Construction is presently constructing concrete hard stands for aircraft parking around the new Midfield Terminal Building, including contact and remote stands. The airside work also includes taxi lanes along the apron parking stands and link taxiway connections to the existing airside infrastructure with a tunnel on the airside. The major item of work for the airside includes earthwork, concrete pavement, asphalt pavement with markings, drainage, general utilities, airfield ground lighting, gate services such as flood lighting, visual dock guidance system and structural works/systems for airside tunnel. The project also includes Aircraft fuel hydrant system, storm & portable water distribution line, chilled water distribution system, medium voltage distribution Sub-Stations, communication network and fire main distribution system on the major utility.

L&T Construction in consortium with Galfar Engineering and Contracting SAOG is currently executing the Salalah International Airport project for Ministry of Transport & Communications, Sultanate of Oman. The design and build contract includes the design & construction of new Terminal Building, and construction of new runway and other related work are being executed in an operating airport environment.

In the late 70’s, L&T Construction secured this prestigious order from the Japanese Joint Venture of Takenaka Komuten Co. Ltd and Kumugai Gumi Co. Ltd., the prime contractors. Architecturally, the airport was conceived as a mushroom shaped dome of diameter 72m and spreads radially to a height of 10m. The airport facilitates simultaneous parking of 11 aircrafts including five B747 jumbos.
The contract included construction of Terminal Building complex consisting of six main sections:

• Control Tower
• Satellite concourse

The airport was commissioned in 1978.

A team of professionals constantly explores new concepts in this field and examines them for local feasibility / applicability and to implement environmentally responsible, financially feasible and technologically sound strategies to conserve energy and to surpass current norms for water conservation, waste management / recycling and the quality of the indoor environment (air, light, acoustics and personal controllability of building systems). Design schemes are prepared and analysed using energy simulation computer software. Alternative designs are offered whenever necessary for increasing the energy efficiency, with its cost-benefit analysis, for the entire life of the project.
Green Initiatives
For the Royal Oman Air force, L&T Construction executed MRO facilities at the F16 Fighter Squadron, Thumrait base in Oman. The scope of work involved construction of facilities to support the operation of the air base.
For Air India, L&T Construction is executing hangar bays, hangar extensions and support facility buildings.
This includes:
• Hangar Bays– 78 x 80 x 28m
• Hangar Extension – 147 x 20 x 29m
• Electrical and support building
• Engine run up bay
• Pavement area–21350 sq.m
The new facility is to be sized to accommodate maintenance for Code E and below airplanes.
L&T also constructed the hangar, annexe and ancillary buildings for Jet Airways which included design, fabrication and erection of the steel structure for the hangar.

Facilities for Indian/Jet Airlines at MumbaiFor the Royal Court, Oman, L&T Construction executed a twin bay air-conditioned hanger, to accommodate two B-747, A-380 aircrafts. Related airside and other infrastructure works were also included in the scope of work. The flight hanger was commissioned in 2004.

L&T has pioneered formwork technology to enable faster completion of complex structures for mega projects through its indigenously developed L&T Formwork System. L&T Formwork System is an engineered, fully compatible arrangement of different components with an optimal number of individual elements having inbuilt safety features, for various forming requirements of concrete construction. Systems marketed include large-area wall formwork, column formwork, flex systems for RC floors, heavy duty towers for heavy and tall floors, advanced automatic & semi-automatic climbing formwork system and modular panel systems. For the airport sector, L&T has customized a multitude of innovative and cost effective formwork schemes to make execution a precision and hassle free task. L&T’s ISO certified facility at Puducherry is capable of handling 20,000 TPA of L&T Formwork. L&T’s ISO and OHSAS certified fabrication facilities at Puducherry and Kancheepuram in Tamil Nadu are capable of handling customized structures for airport projects. L&T’s has specialised facilities for timber and aluminium formwork, metal shops, steel service centres and engineering workshops. All the workshops of L&T are equipped with heavy duty facilities to take up intricate fabrication works for various requirements such as towers, plant structures, steel bridges, space and spatial frames, roof trusses etc. At India’s modern gateway in Delhi and Bengaluru, L&T erected the complex and heavy roof trusses using innovative erection techniques.
L&T has pioneered precast technology in the construction sector and offers complete precast solutions covering design, detailing, production and erection schemes.
