Flying High with the NT ThunderStormy skies may be a fading memory now

Dry Season is here; but Thunder rolled into our College grounds much to everyone’s

excitement this week.

NT Thunder’s Head Coach and some players took time out to teach our students Aussie

Rules football skills in special clinics.

Thank you to Jarred Ilett (CEO), Daniel Archer (Head Coach) and players - Aaron Motlop, Jack McEwin, Matthew Argus, Chris

Dune, Ben Rioli and local legend Kevin Vearncombe for making the sessions such fun and introducing our students to a great

sport and continuing their education in encouraging a healthy lifestyle.

We truly do have some unique opportunities living here and so we also want to thank Gove Operations Pacific Aluminium for

bringing the NT Thunder to town.

From the Principal’s DeskDear families, Welcome to another action packed term. Having already spent time with NT Thunder, there is a bunch of additional extracurricular activities scheduled for Term 3. The Middle School will attend a Careers Expo, a massive multimedia presentation on “Making a Difference” from Motivational Media and go on their annual camps, with the Year 10’s participating in their inaugural 3 week camp to Adelaide, Canberra and Sydney with students from Marrara. The College also has Book Week, Reading under the Stars, Jump Rope for Heart, our Day of Service and Bike Day this term, and Big M will resume again in week 3.We have had to say farewell to our wonderful crossing supervisor Tim White this week but have fortunately found an able replacement with Christine van Eerten. We thank you Tim for helping the students start the day with a welcoming smile and a friendly chat and, of course, for keeping them safe.As part of being a ‘Kids Matter’ school we are embracing the challenge of specifically teaching Social

and Emotional skills. This has been a part of the Early Childhood repertoire for some time but is increasingly being integrated in the teaching across all year levels. The following quote has served as a useful prompt for our staff and serves as a reminder to always explore why a child is acting in a particular way. And I think it is the way Jesus would think because it values the child rather than simply challenging the behaviour.“We do not discipline a student who cannot read, write or count. We put in place supports that help them gain mastery. Why then do we discipline students who have not yet developed appropriate social or emotional skills? They too need the support to learn those skills” Professor Donna Cross

Enjoy your long weekend!

Year One recently received some Lego and wooden

blocks from the P & F and they wanted to say a huge

thank you! Here’s just some of the projects

they’ve been working on.

The middle school Life Skills class is studying conversational Spanish this term, partly for the skill and joy of learning a new language, but also to help our new student from Venezuela, Gus in Year 8, feel very welcome. In this photo, Georgina, Rebecca, Chris, Gus and Sophia are creating a short animated film demonstrating their knowledge of informal Spanish greetings.

Hola! Que pasa? (Hello! What's up?)

Jeans for Genes Day 2013Our College uniform looked a little different on Friday 2nd August as we joined other schools and workplaces around the country wearing jeans for a good cause.

Jeans for Genes Day is a national day when Australians wear their jeans to raise much-needed funds for research into birth defects and diseases such as cancer, epilepsy, and a range of genetic disorders.

All gold coin donations from students on this day go to helping scientists at Children’s Medical Research Institute. They are working to discover treatments and cures, to give every child the opportunity to live a long and healthy life.

Did you know? If all of the DNA in your

body were stretched out end to end, it

would reach to the sun and back over

600 times. 204 million kms!

What is a gene? All of the information needed to make a person is contained in the DNA of our cells. DNA can be thought of as a long stretch of instructions telling the cells in our body how to do their job, whether it’s lung cells helping us breathe or heart cells keeping a rhythm.

How great thou Art

Students are enjoying learning about groups of

colours.

These art pieces are warm colours like the sun's rays or deserts or cool colours like the jungles or oceans.

Students also used curved, relaxed lines or sharp, jagged lines to

make new & fascinating shapes of colour.

Amazing work Year One.

Getting to know... Mr Tim White and say ‘Thank you and all the very best!’Our first College Crossing Supervisor (or Lollipop Man as he became known) has sadly had to return to Queensland with his lovely wife of 49 years, Barbara. Tim and Barbara are pictured here with their grandson Sean Laverack (Year 5) and the Laverack family.

What’s your earliest childhood memory? I was born in Cork City, Ireland and at 3 and a half accompanied my mother and eldest brother for his first day at school. When I realised my brother was staying at school I refused to go home... and thanks to an accommodating teacher, my school career began at a desk next to my brother from that day on.What did you want to be when you were little? I was born in 1939, so World War 2 dampened ambitions for young individuals as families endured very tough situations and with Dad away working in England us children just helped Mum and played in the street (after doing our homework!)

What was your favourite toy as a child? Toys were only for the well offs so we made our own pieces to play with and one toy, like a train set, at Christmas time was a very special treat.

Do you have a favourite motto? Being good to them who hate me. Blessing them that hurt me. Praying for them who persecute and calumniate me - for me, this is all about the ability to forgive and forget.

If you had a day to yourself, what would you do? A long walk whist perusing our life and creating ways to improve the quality of it.

What makes you laugh? The innocence of children as they play and their attempt to solve problems which may occur.

If you could go anywhere in the world on vacation, where would it be and who would it be with? Ireland where I was born, England where my sisters and brother live plus my wife’s family or simply for a chill-out perhaps the West Indies, with my wife.

What smell reminds you of home? My wife Barbara’s roast beef and my Mum’s apple pie.

What do you love most about being a grandparent? The respect and love shown to me and my wife by my grandchildren, the opportunity to guide them on occasions and their response to my input.

What did you enjoy most about working on the school crossing? The interaction with the children which needed to be creative, assertive, forward thinking, truthful and responsible.

What would be one of your favourite books of all time? Anything by Jack Higgins.

Tell us about the most exotic place you've ever lived or visited? The adventure of touring Kakudu in the Northern Territory.

What do you know now that you wished you knew when you were younger? Make the most of every day.

Make sure you wave and say hello to the wonderfully versatile Mrs Christine Van Eerton who’s taken on the College Crossing Supervisor role - Thank you - we really appreciate your help and dedication to keep our children safe.

The Book Mark

“Good books, like good friends, are few and chosen; the more select, the more enjoyable.” —

Louisa May Alcott

Hello from the Library Command Central! This term's book theme is 'Reading Across the Universe'. Already, the students have been exploring books on Space, Planets and the Stars, whilst enjoying the Magic Schoolbus Galaxy tours, and of course, plenty of Star-Wars!

It's time to start thinking of your book week parade costumes, just remember, you can come as any book character you like. You don't spend a fortune, we are looking for creativity and a passion for reading!

I'm excited to be running the Primary students’ Book Club for the avid readers amongst us!  It will be open to students in years 3–6 on Fridays at morning tea. If your child is interested, please email me at [email protected] so I can order a book for them also. The cost will be approximately $15 and the book will be yours to keep.

Happy reading everyone!Love Mrs Dare & Mrs VanEerten

BOOK WEEK IS COMING... WEEK 5

This year’s theme for our annual Book Week is ‘Read Across the Universe’.

On Wednesday 21 August NCC will be hosting our annual ‘Reading under the Stars’. We will be opening up the school to the Nhulunbuy community for a few hours of nighttime reading, bonfires and hot milo. Bring some friends and rug up in your PJ’s and come listen to some awesome storytellers under the beautiful evening sky.

Friday 23 August is our ‘Book Week Dress up Day and Parade’ There will be prizes for best costumes, colouring in and ‘bake a book’ competitions.

So, put your thinking caps on my young padawans. Try to be imaginative you must. May the force be with you.

Food for Thought or...

what’s in your lunch box?

For inspiration and perhaps a little bit of a sticky beak... we thought it would be fun to peek inside someone’s lunch box every now and then. (Don’t panic, we’ll always check with the parent/family first!... now you can relax and read on.) First up is the Collingwood football loving and ‘quite particular about what he eats’ John Dwyer from Year 1/2. On today’s tasty menu he has Spaghetti Bolognese, raw cherry tomatoes, a strawberry, mandarin and a couple of home made chocolate balls. For the record he doesn’t like mushrooms or broccoli but he loves his Mum’s cooking and the Aussie cricketer James Pattinson. Thanks John - Bolognese is a great idea.

Coffee in our LibraryEvery Friday morning

8 – 9amCome along and sit back in the couches of

our Library and enjoy a coffee, tea and cake with other parents.

Everyone is welcome. It’s a great time for a relaxed chat, our Principal Steve Venour even dropped in last week. There’s games for the kids and it’s just a very enjoyable

and laid back way to end your week!
