SUBJECT
Student Representative Council Membership
Ms Heidi Mureau, Postgraduate Distance Education Representative, has been collaborating with CQU’s Learning and Teaching Services on student engagement and voice. In September 2016, Ms Mureau attended the ‘Student Engagement Symposium’ in Sydney, Australia. This symposium provided learnings from the UK and Europe on student engagement experiences and working with students as partners in higher education. The learnings from this symposium, and the ‘Transforming Practice Programme’ conference in April 2016, have identified a number of quick wins to improve the level of student partnering at CQUniversity.
At the Student Representative Council (SRC) meeting of Tuesday, 8 November 2016, Ms Mureau provided a Student Engagement Symposium Report and discussed an analysis of learnings from other global institutions and authorities. Ms Mureau recommends Council change the SRC membership in aims to improve the student voice. Council is asked to consider expanding the SRC membership list to be inclusive of the below proposed membership community groups:

STUDENT ENGAGEMENT SYMPOSIUM REPORT
Meeting Date: 08 November 2016 Submitted by: Ms Heidi Mureau Postgraduate Distance Education Representative
Action required: For endorsement Strategic Plan Alignment: Providing a Great Student Experience Recommendation: That Student Representative Council note the learnings from the ‘Student Engagement Symposium’ conference, provide any feedback, and endorse the escalation of quick wins as a proposal to the Vice-Chancellor’s Advisory Committee. Issue: Student engagement and voice as a strategic priority. Background: Ms Heidi Mureau, Postgraduate Distance Education Representative, has been collaborating with CQU’s Learning and Teaching Services on student engagement and voice. In September 2016, Heidi attended the ‘Student Engagement Symposium’ in Sydney, Australia. Rationale: The evidence is in: student engagement in Higher Education management and governance has many benefits for the University, students and the community. CQUniversity is doing well in engaging with students, and global experiences demonstrate there are many more opportunities available to improve CQU’s student engagement and live up to its espoused values of student engagement as a strategic priority. Consultation: • Dr Julie Fleming, Team Leader, Academic Professional Development/Head of Program • Professor Denise Wood, Director, Centre for Regional Advancement of Learning, Equity, Access & Participation • Ms Heidi Mureau, Postgraduate Distance Education Representative. Conclusion: Analysis of the learnings from other global institutions and authorities, as well as CQUniversity current practices, reveals a number of quick win opportunities to improve student voice: 1. Update of the CQUniversity Engagement Strategy (most recent version is 2011-2014) 2. Appointment of the SRC Coordinator permanently funded from CQUniversity budget 3. Increase SRC Coordination resourcing to support 2. 4. Expand SRC membership for identified LGBTIQ, disabilities, Indigenous and other important demographics,
and 5. Install student representation on all University boards, committees and sub-committees, reference groups,
projects and other groups. Attachment: • Student Engagement Symposium Report November 2016.pptx Communication of Outcomes: • Dr Julie Fleming, Team Leader, Academic Professional Development/Head of Program • Professor Denise Wood, Director, Centre for Regional Advancement Learning, Equity, Access & Participation.

STUDENT LED DISCUSSION• Students and academics reflecting on their own experiences
KEY CHALLENGES - STUDENT PERSPECTIVE• Equity overlap
• Funnelling all engagement through student council
• Appointing representatives to panels– Self-nominated
– Elected
• Students over-surveyed
• Social media versus confidentiality
• University providing adequate resources
• Competing commitments– International time zones
U N I V E R S I T Y P E R S P E C T I V E
• Time poor students
• Better planning > lead time required for engagement
• No embedded checkbox for student engagement
• Student council representation more self-oriented than truly representative
• Barriers to communication
KEY CHALLENGES
DEMOGRAPHIC CHALLENGES• Full time versus part time
• On-campus, distance & international
• Gender
• Age
• States and territories
• Metropolitan versus regional
• Sexual orientation
• Physical abilities
• Indigenous
• Low socioeconomic status
• First in family
• School/program
• Vocational, undergraduate, postgraduate, higher degree research Also custodial status?
SO WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN?
SO…
CQUNIVERSITY IS LISTENING TO THE STUDENT VOICE• We have a Student Representative Council with good diversity
• True representativeness could be improved through recruiting students with different physical abilities, gender identity, sexual orientation, indigenous
• Inclusion of SRC in the major University events
– CQU Senior Leadership Conference
– Opening of Cairns Campus
• Office of Indigenous Engagement• Student Experience team• CQU has conducted end of semester course
evaluations for some time• CQU is investigating the Course Evaluations
mechanism:– To increase the meaningfulness for students and
teachers– To improve the utility in course improvement
• And much more

ENGAGEMENT STRATEGY
Update the 2011-2014 Engagement Strategy
published on our website
We’ve gone through a
merger since then!
STUDENT COUNCIL COORDINATION
Institute the SRC Coordinator as a University funded
position
Increase SRC Coordination resourcing and scope to proactively elicit student engagement & voice
opportunities on University boards, committees and sub-committees, reference groups, projects, etc and to facilitate student comment upon internal initiatives and
policies published for comment/feedback.
The Student Services and Amenities Fee funds the pivotal SRC
engagement role at CQU– this sends a clear, if unintentional,
message that students must pay to be engaged by their own University!
Recognise the importance of SRC coordination support and align its
funding with its strategic importance
STUDENT COUNCIL MEMBERSHIP
No brainer!Expand SRC
membership with targeted positions for LGBTIQ, disabilities…
