P A G E 3

A t this months meeting we again greeted Dawn Allen

from the CAB to learn about the PIP / DLA application

and review process.

Dawn told us that the pip assessment guide was available

online from the DWP gov.uk website

There are two private companies contracted to perform the

assessments, Maximus for the ESA and ATOS for PIP.

It is advisable and you are allowed to record the interview and

take someone with you, but you must advise them before

attending and you have to provide them with a copy of

whatever you record.

Often the interviewer will refuse to discuss mental health

issues and they are able to make assumptions about your

abilities.

The age limits are PIP age 16-65 and for Attendance

Allowance over 65 –help can be found from Age UK

The Personal Independence Payment – runs through a table

of activities, descriptors and points, to qualify;

For PIP a standard rate - score minimum of 8 points

Enhanced rate of PIP - score minimum of 12 points

Award for Mobility part - score minimum of 8 points

ESA - score minimum of 8 points, 15 points for support group

Some examples of questions:

1) Preparing & cooking a meal - how your condition

makes it difficult for you to prepare a meal for ONE,

Does not refer to microwave meals, it is concerned with

preparing from basics ie, recipe and raw ingredients,

including elements of risk of harm to self or others by using

knives, pans, boiling water, anything heavy etc.

2) Dressing yourself - whether you use a shower or bath

if in the house and if you can do this on your own, answer no

if you are not confident without someone else in the house.

Can you put on your own clothing, reaching down to socks or

tie shoes etc.

Besides the CAB, the armed forces also have assistance

through their SAFA group

Help available for carers - attendance allowance for over 65’s

is means tested, awards are given for fixed amount of time

and then need to fill out review form. Assessing if things are

easier, harder or there is no change, for carers allowance, age

16-65 the total time support is needed must be over 35 hours

per week.

Existing DLA claimants – they will write to you to apply for pip.

Need to apply rather than a review.

CAB website for assistance is ~

people-and-carers/

Age UK for attendance allowance ~

How to apply for a Blue Badge ~

There is also a group called Turn2Us that helps by checking

whether you are receiving all the benefits you are entitled to, I

(am a registered facilitator) please give it a try ~

http://benefits-calculator.turn2us.org.uk/AboutYou it also

looks at one off grants that you may be able to receive from

other charity groups etc.

Depress ion ?

Some Suggestions and ideas worth trying

When I was working I had a very

stressful job and sought help from a

counsellor, she was really good and

her experience was extremely

helpful.

On explaining I was having

difficulty sleeping at night, she

suggested I play music in quietly the

background and asked who my

favourite artist was. It wasn’t really

helpful when I Told her Bon Jovi

and Guns and Roses, but we settled

on ‘Enya’ and some innovations on

the Pan Pipes.

This seemed to work most of the

time but I was still suffering from

annoyingly depressive ruminating

thoughts. I really needed

something to distract me from

them. Then it came to me, I love

music of all kinds, think of a song

and sing the words or hum the

tune to yourself,. Even better if you

are quite good or just don’t care,

sing them aloud, for when you are

trying to remember or recite

something the other thoughts have

to take a back seat.

It can difficult and doesn’t work all

the time but does give me quite a

respite most of the time, give it a try

you might be surprised..
