FケOホ Tッャ ナニSイ Oヌ PケーマCハキAヘ ィ Spring is here and we are beginning to see the fruit of our labor unfold before our eyes. Primary students are learning to read independently, lower elementary students are perfecting their math skills, upper elementary students are enjoying their outdoor adventures and our eighth grade students have received acceptance letters to highly selective high schools. We are also gearing up for our students to “show what they know” on the upcoming PARCC assessment. Our students are amazing and I am proud to be their principal. Students and families spent considerable time and energy exploring the best high school opportunities, and 16 of our 22 8th graders were accepted into their top choice application high schools. This is very impressive! We have students accepted to schools such as The Duke Ellington School of the Arts, Mckinley Tech High School, Benjamin Banneker High School, Ron Brown High School, Bard High School Early College DC, and more. In a future edition of Monarch Minutes we will highlight every 8th graders’ final high school choice. Ms. Payton, our school counselor (pictured left), gives individualized guidance to every single 8th grade student as they explore high school options. This is a gamechanger for our students, and though she is often too humble to give herself much credit, it can not possibly be overstated that Ms. Payton’s tireless work is a major factor in why CHML middle school students have so many great high school options. ClaƒƬ ッƈgƇƥƢgƇƭs There are so many examples of great things happening in every middle school class, and here are just a few. In Ms. Hylton’s English (ELA) class, the 7th graders are examining the hero's journey and developing an introspective piece on identity. The 8th graders recently participated in a great workshop titled “Digital Enterprise Academy; Design Thinking and Project Management” organized by Mr. Wilkins (pictured left). In Mr. Constantino’s PE and Health classes, the 8th graders have been working on a presentation to discuss a Millenium Development Goal of the United Nations as well as craft their own goal to address a global issue. The 7th grade class is looking forward to an exciting trip to FedEx Field towards the end of the school to participate in the Redskins F.I.T.T. youth organization end of year celebration, full of physical and cognitive activities with other students from around the city. Kidus and Kirubel both have various interests and hobbies. Kidus enjoys playing the piano and learning about different music genres. He also enjoys frisbee in Mr. C’s PE class. Kirubel enjoys various Youtubers, such as ones that show the game Jailbreak on Roblox. Kirubel has enjoyed researching animals and in Ms. Siham’s art class, he has been able to draw cats and dogs while learning about warm and cold colors. The brothers shared that their family is taking a spring trip to Hershey Park and we wish them loads of sweet fun!

Wha t Pri y M es Mat a ? It is the Dressing Frames! The Dressing Frames are Care of the Person materials in the Practical Life area of the Primary Montessori classroom. As the name implies, Care of the Person exercises show the children how to take care of themselves, which is their ultimate goal as they strive to become independent and gain self-confidence. The Dressing Frames aid in the development of both visual motor coordination andfine motor coordination.

Each Dressing Frame is a 12” x 12” wooden frame that is covered with piecesof fabric and one type of fastening, for example, five buckles are found on the Buckles Frame and one zipper on the Zipper Frame. There are twelve frames in all: Snaps, Large Buttons, Small Buttons, Hooks and Eyes, Velcro, Buckles, Zipper, Bows, Shoe Laces, Safety Pins, Boot Laces, and Shoe Buttons with a shoe button hook; the last one giving an historic nod to what the children were wearing when Maria Montessori opened her first classroom more than one hundred years ago.

Sp i g Po tSur , 3r ra - Ms. Wil ’s C a sSpring flowers bloom, yellow and red, like the sunset.Fall comes and the beautiful flowers go away.Spring comes again, flowers bloom yellow, like the sun.

Car e, 2n ra - Ms. Wil ’s C a sThe sun shines above us, the wind blows the leaves, the cherry blossoms bloom. The flowers are growing, the sun is high,I may say a poem tonight

Ad i , 3r ra - Ms. Ali’s C a sSometimes it’s hot, sometimes it’s cold. Please make up your mind or else the sun will shine, the rain will fall, but spring means being happy, having fun, being nice, meeting nice people and doing great. It is the best season of all.

Jos , 4t ra - Ms. Ec o’s C a sSpring is here, cheer is here, bees are buzzing can’t you hear.Flowers are blooming nice and colorful.Spring is here let’s get our gear. March, April, May, every three months straight. It never stops and never go. Spring is here.

Pen e, 3r ra - Ms. Joh n’s C a sAn a l, 3r ra - Ms. Wil ’s C a sCar e, 3r ra - Ms. Ali’s C a sI can not believe spring is near. Spring has sprung, the leaves are green. In fall leaves are red, in winters it is cold, in summer it is hot, don’t ask me to choose because I cannot. Orange is the color of fall, green is the color of spring, in spring the rain will fall, the blossoms will bloom. I hear the birds chirping and it makes me want to sing. In spring it smells like joy, oh boy! In spring the days are longer and the nights are shorter. In winter the days are shorter and the nights are longer. When I see frogs it makes me want to touch the sky. I hear the rain outside my window and it makes me want to doze to sleep. In my sleep I dream about cherry blossoms blooming and h the happiness of spring because I like it a lot. I can’t believe spring is here.
