The SMARTROLLER® was originated by Stacy Barrows, a Registered Physical Therapist, Certified Feldenkrais® Practitioner (where foam rollers originated from), and PMA certified Pilates Instructor. lumbar extensor muscles

Position roller in line with spine. To focus on right side, roll body slightly to the left keeping spine parallel with roller. Hold and relax. Repeat on other side.

Position roller horizontally along lower back. Gently roll back and forth, stopping in tight areas to allow spine to relax.

hip flexorsPlace roller under hips. Making sure not to arch back, pull knee to chest and allow other leg to relax and straighten.

Place front portion of hip (where it creases) on roller. Extend legs to place toes on floor. Roll hip along roller.

gluteal muscles,piriformis

Roll gluteal region along roller. Repeat on other side.

tensor fascia latae,iliotibial band

Roll along outer thigh from the bottom of hip bone to just above knee. *Do not roll over knee joint.

lower leg / peroneals

Slowly roll along lower leg between knee cap and ankle. *Avoid rolling close to knee and peroneal nerve.

quadriceps

Position roller under quads. Roll from bottom of hips to top of knees. *To intensify, lift one leg off roller, addressing one leg at a time.

inner thighs / adductors

Place roller on inner thigh. Keeping hips open, roll along inner thigh in various planes using arms and other leg for leverage.

Place shins on foam roller and allow body weight to fall on both hands and shins. Roll from below knees to ankles.

shin / anterior tibialis muscles

hamstringsPosition hamstrings on roller and lean back slightly. Roll along hamstrings from bottom of hip bone to top of knees.

Using hands to lift hips off floor, roll calves along roller from area above achilles tendon to just below the knee. calf / gastrocnemium

and soleus

Lie with roller under upper back. Roll up and down on

roller from shoulders down to bottom of rib cage.

Lie with spine inline with foam roller. Relax into roller allowing front of chest

to stretch. *Be careful not to arch back.

Round back while tucking chin into chest and

tucking tailbone under. Raise upper back until a

stretch is felt in that region.

Sit back on heels with toes folded under.

Focus on stretching forward, rather than down.

Intensify by putting elbows on roller.

Push roller out and back extending and retracting

through the shoulder and shoulder blades.

Reach arm out over roller, slowly circle

arm over, back and around to start.

Place roller on backside of upper arm. Roll arm along

roller to massage back side (tricep).

Start with foam roller below armpit and

positioned perpendicular to body. Roll the

lateral upper torso along foam roller.

Place roller between ribs and hip. Slowly roll backwards

until a stretch is felt in lower back region. *Do not hold

in one spot for more than a minute.
