High-Expansion Foam Systems High-Expansion Foam Systems Medium-Expansion Foam Medium-expansion foam is an aggregation of bubbles resulting from the mechanical expansion of a foam solution by air or other gases with a foam-to-solution volume ratio ranging from 20:1 to 200:1. Medium-expansion foam can be used on solid fuel and liquid fuel fires where some degree of in-depth coverage is necessary or where rapid vapor suppression is required. It is effective both indoors and outdoors and produces far more foam using less water than low-expansion foam systems. Popular discharge devices used to make medium- expansion foam are the Ansul KR-M medium expansion foam nozzles. These versatile nozzles can be used with various types of foam agents including TARGET-7 Vapor Mitigation and Neutralizing Agent as a vapor suppressant for hazardous fuming compounds such as chlorine dioxide, oleum, chlorosulfonic and other types of acids. With ANSULITE® 3x3 foam, these nozzles are also effective for flammable and combustible hydrocarbon and polar solvent (water miscible) fuel fires. The KR-M nozzle can also be used with JET-X foam as a fire suppressant for hydrocarbon fuel products. Finally, these nozzles are regularly used with SILV-EX® Class-A foam as a high performance fire suppressant on difficult Class-A fuel fires including wood, paper, coal and rubber. The KR-M medium expansion nozzle can be used with all of these agents as a hand line discharge device or as part of a fixed system (i.e., tank dike protection). How doesJET-X® foam work?

JET-X foam concentrate is a synthetic basedformulation comprised of hydrocarbonsurfactants, solvents, and stabilizers.Effective on Class-B flammable andcombustible liquids as well as Class-Aordinary combustibles, JET-X high-expansionfoam extinguishes fire using severalmechanisms.

▲ Cooling – Water carried to the firedrains out of the expanded foam cooling thefire, the hazard, and the immediatesurroundings.

▲Smothering – The air supplying the firesource is cut off or reduced enough to inhibitcontinued combustion.

▲Penetrating – Because of its low surfacetension, solution draining from the foampenetrates Class-A materials and controlsdeep-seated fires.

▲ Insulating – At a sufficient depth, foamprovides an insulating barrier aroundexposed materials or structures to controlthe spread of fire.

The ever increasing number of fires occurring inwarehouses, storage buildings, conveyors, aircraft hangars, tunnels, etc. suggests thatthe risk of fire in these structures is greater thanever before. In addition, the risks are no longerjust Class A or B materials; they are hazardoustoxic chemicals.

Many facilities need high-expansion foam protection.

Systems you can depend onAnsul high-expansion foam systems are ULlisted and meet the requirements of NFPA11A. Ansul supplies the complete packageincluding JET-X® foam concentrate, bladder tank, proportioner, and foamgenerator(s) – all of which operate on waterpressure – no electrical power source isrequired.Upon operation, incoming water pressurizesthe bladder tank, forcing concentrate fromthe bladder into the proportioner at thesame pressure as the water. The proportionermixes the water and concentrate to a 2.75%solution enroute to the generator(s). The foamsolution is expanded and discharged throughreliable water-powered foam generatorswith outlet capacities ranging fromapproximately 1,000 to 20,000 cfm(28 to 566 m3/min).

Water Supply

A long-proven fire protection method, Ansulhigh-expansion foam systems automatically seekout and suppress fire at the source using muchless water than a stand-alone water sprinklersystem. With expansion ratios typically greaterthan 500:1, high-expansion foam is suitable fornumerous applications includingthree-dimensional hazards, confined spaces andvapor suppression. As such, high-expansionfoam is measured by volume output rather thanapplication rate as is typical of low expansionfoams. Due to these differences, a separatestandard exists for high-expansion foam systemsentitled NFPA 11A: Medium and High ExpansionFoam Systems. NFPA 11A catagorizes three typesof systems: 1) Total Flooding - systems designedto quickly fill an enclosed space above thehighest hazard; 2) Local Application - where thefoam is discharged directly onto the fire orspill - aircraft hangars (NFPA 409) or LNG; and3) Portable Foam Generating Devices - mainly forconfined, underground applications.

Ansul high-expansion foam systems offer manyadvantages over conventional water or foamsystems including:◆ Low water consumption and minimal

water damage◆ Effective on both polar solvent and

hydrocarbon flammable liquids◆ Controls three-dimensional fires◆ Excellent foam mobility & stability◆ Reduces the need for containment and/or

fire pumps◆ Low foam concentrate consumption◆ Cost effective and expedient installation◆ Minimized maintenance◆ Environment-friendly
