“My journey started in Egypt. After high school, I was in a pharmacy school. Then we moved to the U.S. Hudson County Community College was my first choice for starting my college career. I took all kinds of science, chemistry and math courses, and English and speech courses. They were challenging, but I had wonderful professors. My advice to anyone is to come to Hudson County Community College because the classes are small, you get the best instructors, and the courses are transferable to every college.”

“I attended North Bergen High School and learned that since I was in the top 10% of my class, I was eligible for the NJ STARS program, which would let me attend community college for free. I was very excited, because I know how good HCCC is – with small classes, flexible hours, great campuses, and financial aid – because my sisters have gone here. I wanted to study culinary, but wanted to pursue the business side of it, and the HCCC Culinary Arts & Hospitality Management program lets me do that. I learn a lot, and will transfer and get my Bachelor’s degree after I graduate here.”

“Over the years I worked in management, entertainment, finance, and publishing. I was thinking about retiring and finding something new, but was laid off from a position I’d had for years. Under a Department of Labor initiative, I was able to come to HCCC, and was going to study web design. Instead, I chose to study something I love – cooking – and am working towards my A.A.S. in Culinary Arts & Hospitality Management. At 67 years of age, it’s all new, and it’s not easy, but HCCC is wonderful! The environment is really nice, and professors, chefs and students all work together. When I hit a roadblock, the faculty and Student Success and Tutorial Services staff really helped me.”

“Two-and-one-half years ago, I arrived at Newark Liberty International Airport, and my English was so limited, the immigration officer threatened to send me back to South Korea. When I started my ESL studies at Hudson County Community College, I had problems reading and writing English. But I visited the HCCC Center for Academic & Student Success, and Tutorial Services Offices every day. The College made me work harder than I ever had at my academic pursuits. They built my confidence, and I completed all of my college-level courses with a perfect 4.0 GPA.”
