Focus on Baring Head/Orua-PouanuiRestoring our past, revealing our history 2017
The Friends of Baring Head Trust and Greater Wellington Regional Council are working together to redevelop the lighthouse keeper’s complex at Baring Head in East Harbour Regional Park. The buildings and compound are historically significant because they are the only remaining lighthouse complex in original condition in New Zealand. Works proposed will create an attractive new destination for visitors close to Wellington. Work on restoration will take place through a range of projects and we are calling on people, businesses and others to get involved.
Project 7. Restoring the DriveHelp us to restore the Baring Head Lighthouse complex drive, rock garden and paths. You can see from the historic photograph that the drive and rock garden were an important and well-maintained part of the light keepers’ compound, but they have become overgrown with grass and weeds.
Why?Restoring the driveway, rock garden and main path to the light house will return them to the condition the lightkeepers used to maintain. It will help create a sense of arrival for visitors. This work is part of an overall restoration plan for the cottages, which will see comfortable accommodation created for overnight stays in the park complex.
