FOHI Annual Report January 1-December 31, 2012
The mission of the Friends of Hog Island is to preserve the legacy and support the conservation and nature programs and activities of the Audubon Camp at Hog Island.

Promises made; promises kept - FOHI does it again.
In 2012, volunteers, generosity, and, A Sense of Wonder stand out. Each tied into our goals for 2012 and reinforced the deep
commitment of FOHIs.
! Volunteers When Steve Kress announced that the camp would go from 6 sessions in 2011 to 10 in 2012, we gulped. How would we manage to find volunteers
for all those sessions plus the FOHI work weeks. Not only did we find them, but they came and donated over 8,000 hours – almost double that in 2011. They
gave their heart and soul to make every camper’s experience a good one and to
make the camp shine and hum flawlessly. They even restored the historic Writer’s Cabin. A new opportunity was remotely operating the Osprey cam.
! Generosity was evident throughout the year with the ongoing commitment of donors and the number of new donors, but memorable were the times when
spontaneous giving arose for the endowment – during the Road Scholar session a camper offered $1,000 if others would match it. At the New York and Pennsylvania Audubon board retreat
another camper offered $2,000 if others
would match it – in all FOHI donated $10,300 toward the endowment. Another spontaneous match was $500
toward a much-needed, new walk-in fridge that FOHI plans to fund and build in 2013.
Generosity has many forms: donors gave a new projection screen for the Fish House, a second specimen case for the Queen
Mary, more canvas bags and note cards for sale, garden plants, more Adirondack chairs, another dock cart, prints of a water color of Hog Island, and more.

in Damariscotta. Kaiulani Lee performed her one-woman “A Sense of Wonder.” About 15 minutes before the performance,
the theater was only half full - it holds 230. But then, as happens in Maine, at the last
moment, the queue for tickets mushroomed. A sold-out audience brought smiles that would not disappear.
Ms. Lee joined board members Steve Kress and Scott Weidensaul and Tim Glidden (Maine Coast Heritage Trust) for a long Q & A with the audience to discuss environmental issues. She then joined
guests at a post-performance event at the Damariscotta River Grill. All was underwritten by two donors.
The performance did much to raise awareness in the community about Rachel
Carson, Hog Island, and FOHI, beside raising funds.
Financially, we ended 2012 ahead of 2011. Not only did we fulfill our annual
commitment of $50,000 to the camp but also provided another $16,000 for other needs, including the endowment. Donors took advantage of our ability to accept stocks and securities. Financials are on
page 8.
During the summer, we worked closely with National Audubon raising funds for the Hog Island Endowment and the matching funds for the anonymous
$500,000. With a number of planned gifts, we are close to achieving that goal.
Special Thanks go to volunteers
Mary Bennett, who volunteered for every session, and to Joe Beaudette, who stayed for five weeks to help Eric Snyder with building maintenance and more (see
top photo p. 2). Enough cannot be said about the volunteers, their patience enthusiasm, energy, and good humor. They make it happen.
To the new and continuing donors,
we thank you. Team FOHI gets stronger each year because of our volunteers and donors.

A cornerstone of FOHI’s promise to Hog Island is to provide volunteers.
To anyone who runs a nonprofit,
volunteers are the lifeblood of the organization. They not only provide the much-needed skills and moral support, they also provide a passion and commitment that runs deep and spills over
to others. They are the ambassadors of the organization.
In this day and age, they give the most valuable and finite thing they have - time. They care. When they can’t
volunteer, they tell others about their experience and why they do it. They continue to care about the well-being and future of the organization.
A volunteer builds skills,
teaches others, makes friends, networks, learns new disciplines, learns team-building, and enjoys seeing the fruits of their contribution.
At Hog Island, the FOHI volunteers give unceasingly. Amid stunning scenery, working with the Audubon instructors and staff, they
thrive on the dedication and passion of the whole team to make every camper have the best experience that they can. Smiles are the order of the day, whether it be
shucking peas, sweeping out common areas, painting, or any of the myriad tasks involved in running a
camp. At Hog Island, the camper is number one, we want them to smile all day, too.
FOHI manages to keep its costs low because it is an all-volunteer
organization. Some of the off-island volunteer opportunities include the history project - digitally archiving the 76-year
historical documents and photos - as well as event planning, web management, communications, etc
Come and rock with us. We are donors, campers, board members, staff,
neighbors, alumni, and passersby. We care. We rock!
Volunteers Rock
