Folens School at Home: 5th & 6th Class Weekly Plan: Week 1 Introduction The purpose of Folens School at Home is to help parents support their child’s learning at home. Shortly after schools closed down, we at Folens made all of our resources available for parents to use on FolensOnline. However, we understand that parents may not feel they have the time or expertise to pick and choose the most suitable activities for their child across multiple subjects. So, we turned to some experienced primary school teachers and asked them to put together a weekly plan for parents to use at home with their child. The purpose of the plan is to identify age-appropriate resources that can be used to help children learn and to provide some guidance to parents when using them. Each week, we will publish a new plan and accompanying digital resources for each of the three core subjects, English, Gaeilge and Maths, as well SESE (History, Geography and Science). We at Folens appreciate that these are challenging times for everyone and that many parents will have a limited amount of time to support their child’s learning. There is no pressure to complete every activity in the weekly plan – it can simply be used as a menu from which parents can pick and choose. Accessing the Digital Resources The digital resources can all be accessed from FolensOnline. For ease of use, we have included a link to each resource in the plan just below the thumbnail image of the resource. NB: In order to launch each resource, you will need to be logged in to FolensOnline. Registering with FolensOnline In order to login in to FolensOnline, you need to register. To do this: 1. Introduction The purpose of Folens School at Home is to help parents support their child’s learning at home.

• Which of these paintings features a woman with a mysterious smile? What are some synonyms/other words for mysterious? (enigmatic, puzzling, bewildering, cryptic, baffling, curious, inscrutable, secretive, hard to read)

• Which painting is bright and vibrant?

• Which painting is dark and subdued?

• Compare the colours in Café Terrace at Night (first row, second painting) and The Persistence of Memory (second row, second painting). How are they similar? How are they different?

During Listening: Listen to either the Starters (simpler) or Flyers (more challenging) mode. Pause as necessary to check that your child understands. After Listening: Select the Question mode of the poster. Play each question and discuss the answers with your child. Writing Activity: Set the following writing task for your child: Your parents have told you that you can paint a mural on one wall of your bedroom. Activity 2: Poetry Starlight 5th Class: Poster – 11. Painting

https://content.folensonline.ie/programmes/Starlight/5th_class/resources/activities/SL_05_ACT_CH11_001/index.html

Launch the interactive poster: Poster – 11. Painting. Select the Poem mode. Listen to the poem ‘A Slash of Blue’ by Emily Dickinson. Then encourage your child to practice reading the poem with appropriate intonation and pacing, paying particularly close attention to the punctuation. Discuss the following questions:

• What kind of pictures do you have in your mind as you read this poem? How do these pictures make you feel?

• How do you think the poet feels about the Morning Sky? How does she feel about the Evening Sky? What are the differences in the way she describes them?

• How does the poet’s choice of colour words affect the poem? Why do you think she uses ‘scarlet’ and ‘ruby’ instead of just ‘red’?

• List all the verbs the poet uses in the poem. What do these verbs describe? (The act of painting, composing, creating.)

Ask your child to create their own simple colour poem describing a scene in nature, using Dickinson’s ‘A Slash of Blue’ as a template as follows:

A [verb] of [colour] — A [verb] of [colour] —

Some [colour] patches on the way, Compose a [nature scene] —

A little [colour] — slipped between — Some [colour] [item of clothing] hurried on —

A [noun] of [colour] — A [noun] of [noun] —

This just makes out the [nature scene].
