FOLIO; FOLI, ABLATIVE OF FOLIUM, LEAF OF PAPER, FROM LATIN, LEAF. A term for a common method of arranging sheets of paper into book, four sheets of paper or parchment folded to form leaves, a Folio.
Folio uses a three layer refractive system and back plate, which provides a perfectly uniform light distribution across the diffuser:
LEDs are placed on the sides emitting into the diffuser with polymeric light guides which collect the light and distribute across the diffuser substrate evenly.
For rectangular Folio (300 x 600 / 300 x 1200 / 600 x 1200), the LEDs are placed on 2 sides.
But for the four square Folio (300 x 300 / 600 x 600), LEDs are placed on all 4 sides.
Due to design limitations of panels, slight variations in the diffuser colour for different sized panels in close proximity to each other may be observed.
The CCT (colour temperature) remains constant even when dimmed.

Folio comprises of a high transmittance ‘frosted glass’ look acrylic diffuser engendering an impression of being a skylight. Designed to maintain a minimalistic profile the soft edged design gives the impression the folio frame is just kissing the mounted surface.*
APPLICATIONSThe high level of Folio’s robustness make it ideal for demanding public spaces such as education, commercial, medical and transport hubs and would perform equally as well in retail or a whole host of other applications.
LED lighting technology is extremely efficient and LED recessed fixtures are compatible with daylight harvesting systems and various control systems. Increased efficiency means significant savings for consumers when compared to traditional fluorescent. Coupled with the reduced need for maintenance, consumers will experience significant overall cost savings.
LED provides superior light quality over traditional fluorescent and additionally there are no hazardous materials used in the construction of these fixtures.
RETROFIT VS. DROP-IN REPLACEMENT
In the interest of cost savings, consumers might choose to install LED ‘drop-in’ replacement tubes that operate with existing fluorescent ballasts. While this option may seem simple and inexpensive, it is an inferior and short-term solution to a full LED recessed lighting retrofit The retrofit provides many advantages including performance, safety, durability and theft-deterrence.

TECHNICAL
VISUAL DISPLAY UNITS
Louvered troffers were designed to address the in-adequacies of older VDU screen construction. Curved CRT monitors with shiny glass fronts would show negative contrast light detail on dark background views, common amongst DOS based programs. These screens would reflect any bright surface (lighting, windows and even white shirts) as distracting images over “on-screen detail” making it difficult to read.
Modern flat screen displays have better reflection control and most software applications use conventional, black detail on light background contrast virtually eliminating the need for the restricted shielding angles of louvered fittings.
The key point is that low brightness louvered fittings were developed and widely applied in response to issues with veiling reflection images seen in early model VDU screens. The dynamics of that have now changed to the point where louveered fittings are seldom necessary so we can now confidently choose alternatives that don’t possess their bad habits.
DARK CEILINGS
Louvered, or low brightness troffers would generate shade patterns that give rise to dark upper wall sections and have a limited bright appearance within ceilings giving rise to a room appearance often referred to as the ‘cavern effect’. Louvered fittings with their sharp cut off angles set up contrast issues within the workspace, where considerably brighter horizontal workstation surfaces were seen in the same visual field as far lower brightness vertical surfaces of
surrounding areas. Designers had to compensate with supplementary lighting to cater for this simultaneous view of contrasting surfaces. The dispersive light distribution of the Folio projects light that reaches the upper walls and the uniform brightness of the Folio panel provides a bright element within the ceiling plane that is lacking from a louvered fitting. With the addition of dimming control Concord can add a degree of manipulation over the whole lit appearance of a space that louvered fittings would not be able to match.
VERTICAL ILLUMINATION
Providing a uniform vertical light helps to reduce the cavern effect, traditional louvered fixtures have sharp cut off’s, contributing further to the problem of managing simultaneous contrast. Folio’s distribution pattern provides good vertical uniformity of illumination.
UNIFORMITY
With the dispersive distribution pattern of Folio comes increased uniformity across the work plane and increased spacing. Alternatively, where ‘one for one’ replacement is the preferred strategy the use of a control system to vary the light output levels will increase luminaire life and gain further energy savings.
CYANOSIS
“The Australian standard for Cyanosis is very demanding”
The standard defines Cyanosis observation index with an open ended numerical scale which ranks an artificial light source for the purpose of visual observation, a key fundamental to medical practitioners.
This scale or COI cannot be greater than 3.3 and in a CCT band width of 3300K to 5300K.
Throughout this publication look for the hand symbol designed to assist you in quickly identifying Cyanosis approved products.

Clinical observation has always been an important part of medical diagnosis. One significant aspect of clinical observation is the reliable detection of Cyanosis, that is, the bluish discoloration in the skin and mucous membranes which indicates that oxygen levels in the blood are dangerously depleted.
While pulse oximeters are used in operating rooms and recovery areas, there are areas within hospitals where these are not universally used and there are some medical conditions, for example where patients have poor peripheral circulation, which can make their use unreliable. In these instances the ability of medical staff to reliably detect the onset of Cyanosis by visual observation may be critical to a patient’s well being.
Using the data from the first trials and the known reflective properties of blood, a methodology for calculating a Cyanosis Observation Index (COI) was established and published in AS 1680.2.5:1997.3

The COI is a dimensionless number and is calculated from the spectral power distribution of a lamp. The methodology calculates the colour difference between blood viewed under the test lamp and when viewed under the reference lamp (a 4000K Planckian source) for 50% and 100% oxygen saturation and averages the results. To comply with AS 1680.2.5 requirements for the reliable diagnosis of cyanosis, the COI should be 3.3 or lower and the lamp correlated colour temperature should be between 3300K and 5500K.

The selection criteria for lamps and now LED for clinical observation should be as follows:
• COI of 3.3 or lower• Colour temperature between 3300K and 5300K• Lamp/Luminaire price• Lamp availability• Lamp/Luminaire life• Lamp/Luminaire efficacy• Lumen maintenance• Lamp/Luminaire range
Lamp efficacy has a varying impact on lighting design. Many recommended lighting levels in hospitals are generally in the 160–240 lx range and these are readily achieved by lower efficacy lamps at practical spacings. For larger areas and higher recommended illuminance areas, higher efficacy can be an advantage.
Prices will vary, with costs to a hospital for COI and CCT range compliant lamps at up to 3 times the cost of a non-complying 800 Series triphosphor and have an average life of 20 000 hours.

MOUNTING CLIP1. Ceiling thickness, 10 – 15mm. Packers must be used if ceiling thickness is below minimum.2. Minimum ceiling cavity height for all fittings is 120mm.3. All mounting clips (refer to table on page 18) must be used.4. Familiarise yourself with fitting clips prior to installing into ceiling.
• Locate bottom lugs of mounting clip in between ceiling tile and frame, in the position as per layout on page 18.
• Compress mounting clip and locate lug into groove of frame. Repeat for all other mounting clips.
