IntroductionDEFINITION OPEN SOURCE The term open source describes practices in production and development that promote access to the end product's source materials. Some consider open source a philosophy, others consider it a pragmatic methodology. Before the term open source became widely adopted, developers and producers used a variety of phrases to describe the concept; open source gained hold with the rise of the Internet, and the attendant need for massive retooling of the computing source code. Opening the source code enabled a self-enhancing diversity of production models, communication paths, and interactive communities. Subsequently, the new phrase "open-source software" was born to describe the environment that the new copyright, licensing, domain, and consumer issues created DEFINITION SOFTWARE Computer software, or just software, is a collection of computer programs and related data that provide the instructions telling a computer what to do and how to do it. We can also say software refers to one or more computer programs and data held in the storage of the computer for some purposes. In other words software is a set of programs, procedures, algorithms and its documentation. Program software performs the function of the program it implements, either by directly providing instructions to the computer hardware or by serving as input to another piece of software. The term was coined to contrast to the old term hardware (meaning physical devices). In contrast to hardware, software is intangible, meaning it "cannot be touched". Software is also sometimes used in a more narrow sense, meaning application software only. Sometimes the term includes data that has not traditionally been associated with computers, such as film, tapes, and records DEFINITION OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE Open-source software (OSS) is computer software that is available in source code form for which the source code and certain other rights normally reserved for copyright holders are provided under a software license that permits users to study, change, improve and at times also to distribute the software

Open Source Operating SystemDEFINITION OPEN SOURCE OPERATING SYSTEM An operating system is a set of programs that schedule tasks, allocates storage and presents a default interface to the user between applications. Many of the first operating systems were devicedependent and proprietary. The functions of the operating systems are:y y y y y

starting a computer providing a user interface managing data and programs managing memory configuring devices

A device-dependent program is the one that runs only on a specific make of a computer. Proprietary software is privately owned and limited to a specific vendor or computer

ex lanation Refers to the family of Unix-like com uter o erating systems using the Linux kernel. Linux can be installed on a wide ariety of com uter hardware, ranging from mobile hones, tablet com uters and ideo game consoles, to mainframes and su ercom uters.Linux is a leading ser er o erating system, and runs the 10 fastest su ercom uters in the world.

Production of the Mac is based on a ertical integration model in that A le facilitates all as ects of its hardware and creates its own o erating system that is re-installed on all Mac com uters. This is in contrast to most IBM PC com atibles, where multi le sellers create and integrate hardware intended to run another com any's o erating software. A le exclusi ely roduces Mac hardware, choosing internal systems, designs, and rices. A le does use third arty com onents, howe er, such as gra hics subsystems from nVidia and ATi. Current Mac CPUs use Intel's x86 architecture; the earliest models (19841994) used Motorola's 68k and models from 1994 2006 used the AIM alliance's PowerPC. A le also de elo s the o erating system for the Mac, currently Mac OS X ersion 10.6 "Snow Leo ard". The modern Mac, like other ersonal com uters, is ca able of running alternati e o erating systems such as Linux, FreeBSD, and, in the case of Intel-based Macs, Microsoft Windows. Howe er, A le does not license Mac OS X for use on non-A le com uters.
