REFEREE SiGNaLS you may see

The Referee STOPS and STaRTS the matches by extending his arm between the two athletes. The match clock stops and starts again when he raises his arm.

Referee Warnings: KYONGOSWhen an athlete commits a foul a Kyongo is given. If the athlete gets two Kyongos the opponent is awarded a point. The Referee points at the athlete who has committed the foul then sweeps his arm across his body to indicate the warning.

If the Athlete commits a serious foul (this can be punching in the face on purpose, attacking after the break or attacking a fallen opponent) he will receive a one point penalty called a GaMJEOM. One point is awarded to his opponent.

The Referee raises his hand straight up in the air to indicate a Gamjeom!

improve self-esteemPeople with a good and healthy self-esteem are able to feel good about themselves, for who they are, appreciate their own worth, and take pride in their abilities and accomplishments. They also acknowledge that while they’re not perfect and have faults, those faults don’t play an overwhelming or irrationally large role in their lives or their own self-image.

Build confidence Confident people inspire confidence in others: their audience, their peers, their bosses, their customers, and their friends. Gaining the confidence of others is one of the key ways in which a self- confident person finds success.

If you are a school or group looking to bring Taekwondo to your area and want to find out about local clubs and taster sessions, please contact British Taekwondo’s Development Director Margaret Nolan:[email protected]

London has a large number of great Taekwondo clubs, with different classes to suit all tastes, ages and abilities. Some may specialise in the sport aspect, with competition training forming the majority of their programme. Others may practice only the Martial Art, teaching traditional movements, self-defence and belt promotion modules.

The vast majority of clubs tend to offer a balance between the sport and Martial Art with different classes available.

Develop self-discipline Self-discipline is an invisible magic. You can’t see, taste, or smell it, but its effects are huge. It can transform fat into slim, sag into buff, uninformed into expert, poor into rich, misery into happiness. Self-discipline makes you happier; it gives you that sense of real achievement earned through sheer intensity of sustained focus.

Teach safety awareness and self-defence by training you to recognise situations in which physical self-defence may be necessary, and teaching you how to control situations to your advantage.

What Taekwondo can do for YOU

You can learn Taekwondo as a sport and as a Martial ArtMost people who take up Taekwondo do a little bit of both to start with and eventually choose which type of training they prefer.
