Council continued from page 2

Dear Resident:

Approximately one year ago,the City received approval romCharleston County to explore aproject to alleviate drainage issueson West Ninth Street, move severalditches and pipes, and realign RedSunset Lane so that it alls onto theCity owned right-o-way. As a nalstep in gathering public input on thisproject, the Planning Commission

will be holding a public hearing onMonday, December 6 at 7:00 p.m.Te meeting will be held in City

Council Chambers.

All residents are encouragedto attend this meeting and oertheir testimony in support or inopposition to this project. I youhave any questions about the detailso the proposed project you may contact Steve Robinson, Director o Public Works at 513-1832. Maps o

the proposed realignment are alsoavailable at City Hall or viewing.

or special meetings and workshopsalmost every week to get some legislationpassed beore the end o the year.On the other hand, i a sitting councilmember relinquished his seat, City Council could lose its experienced base.Consider the last election in which twomembers chose not to run or reelection

and two members ran against incumbentmayor Carl Beckmann. I Beckmann had won his bid or reelection and Ellis andGoodwin had been required to give uptheir seats, we would have had our new members. I Laura Beck had lost her raceor reelection, we would have had venew council members. Newcomer D.J.Rich gured this out. “Tere’s a reasonhal the people come up or electionevery two years,” he said. “I we had venew people, I don’t think we’d get muchdone.” Imagine that.

Councilman Clamp wanted to make sureno convicted elons could run or ofceand that candidates should be permanentresidents o Folly Beach who were at least21. “As it is now,” said Clamp, “we couldhave someone living out under the steps

who could run or mayor and be elected.”Oddly enough, although convicted elonscannot vote, they can still run or publicofce.

City Council Meeting:November 9Te two-hour workshop was ollowedby a blessedly short council meetingin which Gail and Hugh Tomas weregranted a variance or their property at 114 West Cooper and a resolutionawarding the contract or a park on the

West side was postponed ater opposition

rom the adjacent property ownerGregory Saylors, whose back porch is 35eet rom the proposed playground andclaimed his right to the quiet enjoymento his property would be compromised.“Who is crying out or this playground tobe built?” he asked. “Tere are very ew children on the west side o the island.”He said the park would be used mostly by non-residents and he had concerns

about noise, trash and restroom acilities.“Does the project appreciate my property or depreciate it?” he asked. “Would youvote yes on this project i it were 35 eetrom your back porch?” Beck moved topostpone the decision until December inlight o the questions raised by Saylors.

Council commentsEllis asked to schedule a special councilmeeting or the ollowing week to discussthe Beach Management Patrol, butCharlie McCarty said reinstating theprogram was an employment issue thatshould be covered in executive session.Hume suggested that any councilman

asking to postpone a proposed ordinanceor resolution spearhead the eort toinsure that the issue comes beoreCouncil in a timely manner. “It istoo easy when there is controversy topostpone the issue,” he said. “But that’snot what we were sent here to do.”

Special Council Meeting:November 16

As noted by Hume, the current councilhas gotten in the habit o having specialmeetings, which can be called i ourmembers request one. Special meetingsare generally called on very short noticeand the public oten is not aware that

the meeting is being held. Te special

meeting prior to this one was calledbecause a council member had ailed toget unding rom the A-ax Commissionor his street estival.

Councilman Ellis introduced a resolutionand ollow up budget amendment totemporarily und the Beach ManagementPatrol through the winter with $14,000in council discretionary unds to pay

John Crisco, who has run the programsince its inception, and one helper. Teprogram is scheduled to resume on April1 and is budgeted through June 30, 2011.Te uture o the program ater next Juneis uncertain.

Te Beach Management Patrol wasounded in response to a disastrousFourth o July weekend in 2009 and wasset up to unction during the summermonths or three years. However, ormer mayor Carl Beckmann, withoutCouncil’s approval, authorized unds tokeep it running during the winter lastyear. Tis led Crisco to think it was a

ull-time job and he was outraged whenhis position was cancelled without notice.Friends o the popular and highly-acclaimed program rallied behind Criscoin demanding that the program bereinstated or the winter months.

Citizens CommentsSusan Breslin said special meetings weresupposed to cover business needingimmediate attention. “Tis matter isurgent or John Crisco; it is not urgentor the City o Folly Beach,” she said, adding that the City runs the risk o being seen as secretive and biased i special meetings become the norm. In

Council comments at the end o themeeting, Beck sa id Breslin’s point was well taken but Council was trying really hard to work together and support oneanother. At some point they will surely agree to disagree. At this point, most o the dissenting votes have been last by themayor in 6-1 decisions.

A hal dozen residents stepped orward toexpress their opinions on continuing theBeach Management Patrol with everyoneagreeing that Crisco and his team haddone a great job and splitting 50-50 on

whether the modest amount o trashgenerated during the winter warrantedthe expenditure. In the end, ater two

hours o discussion, Ellis voted againsthis own ordinance and it ailed by a voteo 0-7.

Not to worry i you missed all the un.City Council wil l hold a Work Session at4:00 p.m. on December 7 (prior to the6:00 p.m. Special Meeting) to hash outhow to dene and integrate the BeachManagement Patrol and two additionaland as yet ununded programs that seek to enlist volunteers to patrol the beachassisting public saety and picking uptrash. I can’t keep the names o theseprograms straight anymore. Lions andtigers and bea rs, oh my.

 Letter from the mayor...

Dear Friends and Neighbors.

Te City o Folly Beach is beginningpreparations or the Christmas season. In my previous letter I had mentionedsome important dates or all Folly residents, as ollows: Te Christmas reeLighting will be held at Folly River Park on December 1 at 7 p.m.; Te Children’sChristmas estival will held at Folly RiverPark on December 10 at 6 p.m.; and theChristmas Parade will start at 1 p.m onDecember 11 and will take place alongCenter Street.

Tis is the time o the year when “good will” toward others and mending encesreally puts our hearts in the holiday mode. We all have our opinions, as itshould be; however, let’s put dierence o opinion aside and concentrate on comingtogether to celebrate this holiday season.

Council recently has been addressing theCivilian Beach Patrol which has resultedin a lot o input rom the public, which

is very much welcomed. Decisionsmade when taking public input intoconsideration brings orth a betteroutcome. Te majority o the commentsseemed to be whether or not city undsshould be used to continue this programduring the winter months. Tere havebeen concerns expressed on both sides o the issue, and a lot o misunderstanding

regarding the intent o the administrationand council as to the uture o thisprogram. Neither administration norcouncil intended or the Civilian BeachPatrol program to be terminated. Teprogram was only suspended or a shortperiod o time or a couple o reasons, therst being that the program was supposeto end on September 30, and the secondbeing the need or council to hold work sessions to address the three componentso the program: the Civilian Beach Patrol,Volunteer Program, and Public Saety’sBeach Enorcement program. With theeconomy in its present condition andthe possibility o the State turning overcontrol o our local hospitality tax, whichunds this program, to a Governor’sourism Committee in Columbia thereby reducing the amount Folly would receive,it is important to blend these threecomponents into one program. Te City can then use the unds in a way that willmost benet this community. A work session to address the Beach Management

Program, which includes the CivilianBeach Patrol, has been scheduled orDecember 7, 2010. Te work session isscheduled to begin at 4 p.m. and end at6 p.m. Te council meeting will begin at6 p.m. with Council going into ExecutiveSession at 6:05 p.m.

In January o this year, I introduceda resolution which council approved

whereby citizens who are 65 years orolder and reside ull time on Folly, areon a xed income, and who own theproperty in which they live, are entitledto one ree 90-gallon roll cart (garbagecan). All you have to do is come intoCity Hall and talk to Marlene Estridge,Vivian Browning, or Steve Robinson.

Also, i you have not gone on the

city’s web site to register your cell phoneand e-mail address, please do so at yourearliest convenience. Te city’s web siteis www.cityoollybeach.com. Click on“Outbound 9-1-1” on the home page andollow the directions given. Tis ensuresany message the city considers important

will be sent to you. I the city is able toget the majority o e-mail addresses o ourcitizens, we will have the ability to sendsurveys so we, Mayor and City Council,

will know your opinion on issues whichcould aect you.

At the council meeting on December7, 2010, one o the components o theBeach Management Plan, as mentioned

above, is the Volunteer Program whichincludes several categories, such as beachpatrol, clerical, homeland security, andothers. I you eel you have would like tocontribute your time and give somethingto your community, call Marlene Estridgeor Vivian Browning at 513-1830 andgive your name and telephone number.Richard E. Byrd, the rst man to fy over

the North & South Poles, said that, “Few men during their lietime come anywherenear exhausting the resources dwelling

within them. Tere are deep wells o strength that are never used.”

With our economy still in a state o decline, we, Mayor and Council, havecommitted to establishing a new normalo government spending. o achieve a

new normal o government spendingtakes a balancing act because we have tomake sure we are not overspending whilealso making sure we are not overcutting.Te City’s savings (or reserves) are inoutstanding shape while still maintainingthe required $1M in the und balance. However, the city cannot rest on itslaurels; it still has to take necessary stepsto ensure this city will be nancially healthy, quality services will continue tobe provided, natural resources protected, beaches renourished and the Folly Beachatmosphere let unblemished.

Te New Year, 2011, is ast approachingand will bring many changes. Whatever

it brings, I wish or each o you and youramily a healthy, happy, and prosperousNew Year.

Sincerely,

Tim Goodwin

 Mayor

Folly resident Victor Prockow might be best knownor his signicant role in opening the rst sleepdisorder center in the state at the Medica l University

o South Carolina, but today he is more well-known orhis role in a much dierent eld: the world o art.

Ater turning down jobs in states ranging rom

Caliornia to New York, Victor movedrom Montreal, Canada, to Charlestonbecause, according to him, it is such abeautiul - and aordable - city. Aterexperiencing much success in hismedical career, Victor began dating alocal art teacher. One aternoon, sheasked Victor i he would help her manher booth at the Ladson Flea Market, and it didn’t take long or Victor tonotice that the ea market was notexactly the best place to sell originalart. He graciously used his networkingconnections to get her a table at theMarket downtown so that she would becloser to her target audience.

“When people buy art, it is oten impulsive, spontaneous,” said Victor, and ater noting her success,he concluded that being able to see a piece o art while ona stroll provided or a much more lucrative business.

While he is not an artist himsel, Victor discovered heloved being behind the scenes - “the man with the ideas,"so to speak - so he opened a gallery in 1991 in one o thebest locations in Charleston: North Market Street. But working 20 hours a day or nearly ve years just wasn’t

cutting it; Victor had to choose his career path.

“When you establish a business and it’s going welland you drop it, you may never get it back,” he pointedout, and eventually decided to continue pursuing his artbusiness since he could always return to medicine.

What a great decision he made, too. His gallery, 86

Market Arts, has ourished, prompting Victor to open a

second gallery, Artsy’s Gallery, in Savannah on East RiverStreet. Each gallery oers the “lowest prices in town orcustom raming and ashionable art.” By selling prints,Victor proves spectacular art does not have to be in theorm o an extremely expensive original.

Local artists are eatured and preerred in hisshops, but the selection is wide and endless at Victor’sgalleries; there is always something new available at 86Market Arts and never a lack or Charleston scenes. Te

prints are available with custom raming and matting,as well as glass alternatives, all o which help to makethe inexpensive prints look like much more expensiveoriginals. Tese include the Z-gel, crackle nish, linenlaminate, canvas laminate and satin laminate which allresist dust, wrinkles, and UV rays, and clean like glass.

With the south’s humid climate, these areexcellent choices or pieces hanging on the walls o beach houses or bathrooms.

While his career has always allowedhim to spend the majority o his timedowntown, Victor nally chose Folly Beachas his permanent home. He bought a lotin the mid-80s on which he later built hispresent home because he has always lovedthe beach, particularly Folly Beach.

Victor laughed, “O course, once youmove to the beach, why would you everleave?” Te current location suits himperectly as he is close to ront beachand Center Street, but is still able to live

in one o the only subdivisions on Folly. Te riendly

community and relaxing atmosphere doesn’t hurt, either. With technology, Victor pointed out, he is able to havethe best o both worlds, doing much o his work virtually rom his home ofce and the rest o the time enjoying hisdays on Folly.

Police Reports

Te early thief gets the purseSeveral women who parked at dierentbeach access areas on the West sidereturned rom early morning walks onOctober 26 to nd that the windows o their vehicles had been smashed in andtheir purses stolen. Te purses containednumerous credit and debit cards, which al l

the women immediately cancelled. No onenoticed anything unusual that morning atthe access areas and there are no suspects.

Maybe they were dressed as ghostsOn October 30 about 9:00 p.m. a policeocer and a state constable were assistinga ather with two children who had justcome rom the Halloween carnival crossthe pedestrian walkway at Center Streetand Indian Avenue when a white Nissantravelling north on Center Street ailed toslow on approach. Te ocer shined hisfashlight to get the driver’s attention andthe state constable waved an illuminatedtrac wand, but the car did not slow down and came within inches o runningdown the children. Te ocer slapped thepassenger side window loudly and yelledor the driver to stop, but she continuedto drive o. Another police ocer jumpedinto his vehicle and managed to stop thesubject near Oak Island. As the ocerapproached, he detected a strong odoro alcohol emanating rom the vehicle. He asked the subject to exit the vehicleand perorm the standard eld sobriety tests, but when she tried the one-leggedstand she stumbled and ell over into theroadway. Te ocer decided that askingher to perorm any other tests would

probably endanger both o their lives, soshe was placed under arrest or DUI andissued a citation or ailing to yield at acrosswalk. When she reused to take theBAC test at the County Detention Center, her license was conscated and she wasbooked on a DUI charge.

Te dog will bark next t ime, tooPublic Saety was dispatched to a residence

in the 500 block o West Ashley about1:00 a.m. on November 5 by a woman who reported having seen an intruderattempting to enter her house rom theback porch. She said her dog startedbarking and when she looked out the window she saw a man running away.Te victim told the ocer that on theprevious morning about 5:30 her dogstarted barking uncontrollably and whenshe got up to investigate, she saw that therear storm door was open and the reardoor was ajar, but she gured she had justorgotten to close the doors beore goingto bed. Ocers checked the beach areaor a suspect, but did not nd anyone.Te residence was put on a special patrolrequest.

Wait ‘til my lawyer gets here When Public Saety responded to a reporto an accident on Center Street about 8:00p.m. on November 9, witnesses directedthem to a man sitting on a bench in ronto the Crab Shack. When the ocersapproached him they detected a strongsmell o alcohol and observed all thephysical signs o gross alcohol intoxication.Te subject needed assistance to standand walk without alling down and clearly presented a danger to himsel as well as

others. When an ocer advised him thathe was being deta ined or investigationo drunken driving, the suspect deniedbeing in the vehicle and said someoneelse had driven the vehicle there and letin a taxi. But several witnesses said they saw the subject stagger out o the bar, getinto the driver’s seat and attempt to pullout o his parking space. Tey said hedrove his vehicle into the car in ront o

him, then stopped and got out o his car.Damage to the vehicles was consistent with their description. When the suspect was conronted with this inormation,he claimed that the unoccupied truck had somehow backed into his car. Teocer tried to get the suspect to take aeld sobriety test, but he reused. He wasplaced under arrest or public drunkennessand DUI and a routine search o hisperson ound the keys to the subjectvehicle in his pocket. During transportto the Charleston County DetentionCenter he became very argumentative, saying he was a lawyer and he was goingto sue the arresting ocer and “have his job.” At the jail he said he would not takethe BAC test without his lawyer presentand he reused to open his mouth untilhis lawyer arrived. During the reading o his rights, the ocer had to shout overthe subject because he kept interruptingand pounding his st on the desk. Teocer elt the subject was clearly tryingto provoke him, so he considered it areusal to take the test and issued hima notice o suspension. He was bookedinto the county jail or DUI and publicdrunkenness.

Are you ready for a good ass kicking?Public Saety ocers on vehicle patrolat 8:20 a.m. on November 12 observeda man stumbling and alling down on aCenter Street sidewalk and pulled overto help him. Te man said he lived in

Mariner’s Cay but could produce noidentication and said he must havelet his wallet in Planet Follywood. Teocer oered to drive him to the barand then to his house. A search o thePlanet ailed to turn up the man’s wallet, but as the subject was being driven tohis residence, dispatch called to say thesubject had an outstanding amily courtbench warrant. Te ocers waited at the

gate to Mariner’s Cay or more than 15minutes or conrmation and were aboutto let the subject go when dispatch ca lledback and asked them to meet the Sheri’sdeputy at the Piggly Wiggly. When oneo the ocers advised the subject that he was going to have to go with the deputy, his demeanor changed rom pleasant tohostile and he started to curse the oceror “locking him up.” Te ocer told himit was a county warrant and he would haveto take that up with them, but the subjectcontinued to blame him and becameverbally hostile and indicated he wantedto ght, telling the ocer it “would be on” when he let him out o the patrol car. Tesubject cued up all right when removedrom the car by the two ocers, butramped up his attitude and reused to getback into the patrol car. When advisedthat he would be tasered i his resistancecontinued, the man said “go ahead” anda stun was applied to his trapezium thatorced him into a seated position. Tenthe man stuck his let leg out the door and would not pull it back in so a stun wasperormed on his thigh that caused him torecoil it into the vehicle. When the deputy arrived, the ocer issued a city ordinanceor public intoxication and transerredcustody. Te incensed subject, who wasnow thrashing about as he was secured inleg irons, threatened the arresting ocerand said he would “k ick his ass” when hegot out.

T he prequel to Oren Peli’s Paranormal Activity once again proves that less ismore. Director od Williams hits this spot on: Paranormal Activity 2 is a heart-pounding good time!

In a Hollywood era o in-your-ace blood and gore, Williams allows the audience’simagination to take the driver’s seat and prepares you or an unnerving lm experience.od Williams, using Michael R. Perry’s script, stays true to the rst lm’s method. Tisis extremely important because this lm takes place two months beore the rst movieand provides more background inormation on both lms. Tose who saw the rst lm will be immediately chilled to the bone when Micah and Katie (Micah Slot and KatieFeatherston) appear on screen. We all know what happened to them and now we get tosee what happened beorehand.

Sticking with the theme o “less is more,” I am going no urther into detail as I mightgive too much away! Te movie is extremely sparse and has a slow pace, but this allowsor the tension to build and envelope its audience, making the jolts o terror even moreunexpected. I latched onto my boyriend’s right arm and I know by the end o the lmhe had no eeling let in his ngers.

Another positive aspect o this lm is the acting and I would like to tip my hat toall who stepped in ront o the camera. Te lm is supposed to be a mix o handheldcamera shots taken by the amily and surveillance ootage. o make the story believable, the actors had to come o as real people. Being aware o the camera in some scenes andnot in others, being annoyed by it at one moment and totally oblivious the next. Tis isnot an easy task, but they made it look eortless.

Paranormal Activity 2 was a blast and I enjoyed every terriying moment. I youdon’t catch it while it’s in theatres this would make an excellent rental, especially on arainy day!

I you’ve recently been to Sunset Cay Marina on the west end o Folly Beach, you may have noticed that the marsh is now ree o the trash and debris thathas been accumulat ing there or many years. ires, wood pilings, lumber,

rats, more tires, beer bottles, shing lines, aluminum cans, assorted plastics andother tossed away items were creating a huge eyesore.

ired o the trashy marshes, riends and Folly residents ed McCormack, Jerry Slayton, and Robert Miller spent many hours during a seven oot high tideon November 6 collecting debris. Even though the eort let them with somepretty sore muscles, the volunteer crew collected an estimated two to three tonso garbage.

A sincere and grateul “thanks” go to these gentlemen, and a special thanksto Butch Clark or having all this trash hauled away. Te marsh looks so muchbetter now!

In the uture, it would be wonderul i everyone respected our waterways andmarshes, and the wildlie that inhabit these areas, so this would not be an ongoingproblem.

Thanks to (l to r) Jerry Slayton, Robert Miller, and Ted

McCormack, The Sunset Cay Marina marsh is now

healthier.

Audrey McClelland is the ounder o Mom Generations, an online destinationor moms. She is an expert at holiday shopping or her tech-savvy husband, ourboys (all younger than six), and a largeextended amily.

McClelland oers her top ve holiday shopping tips and git ideas that will helpyou conquer your holiday shopping - onbudget - or everyone on your list.

1. Keep a master list. It can getoverwhelming around the holidays whenyou are trying to decide who you areshopping or that day. Outline everyone

2. Be sure to have gits on hand thatcan be given to anyone, regardless o

their tastes. For example, Staples carriescolorul Omnitech mini speaker podsin jewel tones or only $10 that can pluginto any iPod, Sony PSP, or MP3 player, and are perect or kids and grown-upson the go. Digital photo ornaments in theshape o decorative balls or snowakesmake another universally likeable git orless than $15. Tese are also time-savers

to have on hand or ofce Yankee swaps, hostess gits or any unanticipated presentsyou may need.

3. Don’t waste time rushing rom storeto store. ry condensing your shoppingvisits to the ewest number o storespossible. Pick a shopping destination ortwo, and commit to buying as many gitsas you can or your list there.

4. It’s a digital world - ollow youravorite shopping places on Facebook andwitter. Many stores reward their ollowers

  with up-to-the-minute deals via these

social media outlets. Stores occasionally post exclusive print-out coupons and dealsspecically or their Facebook riends, and let you know about upcoming eventsahead o time.

People sometimes orget that treesneed the same care and maintenanceas other landscape plants. Folly’s

palmettos have stood like sentinelsover the island - bending in the storm, surviving when little else did - but the

recent die-os o distressed palms haveshown us that they are not invincible.

Clemson Extension Service arboristMark Arena said that many palmettotrees on Folly Beach are severely distressed and that this compromisedcondition will inevitably lead to massivedie-os unless steps are taken to addressnutritional deciencies and correctcultural practices.

Te rst step is or residents to takea close look at their palmetto trees todetermine i they show signs o stress.Ideally, the crown should resemble a balland the ronds should be bluish green withminimal yellowing o lea tips. “I am not

encouraging people to say ‘my leaves areyellow’ and go out and t hrow a bunch o ertilizer around the tree. Proper actionneeds to take place, however, improperertilization o plants does more harmthan good,” said Arena.

I what you see is less than ideal, the next step is to have your soil tested.Soil testing can be done by taking asample o the soil rom several locationsaround distressed palms to the ClemsonExtension Service oce at 259 MeetingStreet. For trees that appear severely distressed, you may also want to take arond or a tissue analysis.

Based on visual observations and

results o soil and tissue samples, yourpalmettos will need either a maintenanceprogram and possible a deciency correction program. Soil and tissuesamples taken by Arena showed severepotassium deciencies as well as excessivelevels o phosphorus and calcium withmany samples also showing low levels o iron, magnesium, and manganese.

Tese deciencies are caused by insucient nutrients, an improper balanceo nutrients, nutrients in a orm that is

not available to the tree, pH imbalance, improper planting depth, lack o organicmatter and excessive pruning. “Te pHneeds to be in a range o 5.5 to 6.5 orthe roots to be able to gather nutrientsrom the soil,” said Arena. “In a natural

state the alling ronds decompose, addorganic matter and keep soil health ata desirable level.” Because we clean upour yards organic matter gets depleted, thereore, it is advisable to add organicmatter to the soil around your plants. However, be careul not to build up thesoil level so it has an adverse aect on theplant.

Soil analysis results will indicate thevalues o the nutrients in the groundand provide recommendations onhow to address the areas that needcorrection, but this is NO the righttime to ertilize. Starting in early March, Arena recommends applying

John Deere Landscapes (LESCO) palmertilizer at an application rate o 1.5pounds per 100 square oot. Tis isan 8-2-12+4 Magnesium ormulationthat was specially designed or palmsbased on their needs. Te rst numberin the ormula is nitrogen, the secondphosphorus, and the third potassium.Tis ertilizer should be reapplied atthe same rate in mid June. Te ertilizershould be broadcast in a complete circlestarting about a oot rom the base o the tree and extending to the drip line, which is the where the outermost rondsend. LESCO applications should becomepart o a continual maintenance plan or

palmetto trees.I soil or tissue samples ind icate severe

deciency o potassium, an applicationo potassium should occur mid seasonater the maintenance ertilizer has beenapplied. In early May, broadcast a 3:1ratio slow-release blend o sulur-coatedpotassium sulate and prilled Kieserite  around the base o aected trees. “A slow-release ertilizer is needed to insurethat plants wil l get ed continuously overtheir growing period,” said Arena. “Teertilizer is available immediately and a

heavy rain will not wash it away. Tisis even more important in sandy soil.”  Arena said he expects many palmettoson Folly Beach are suering rom severepotassium deciencies.

Manganese deciency should be treatedseparately only i the soil test indicates asevere deciency, according to Arena. A severe deciency will require applicationso Tecmangan every two to three monthsor the rst year. It will likely be used inaddition to the potassium applicationand can be ollowed in the second yearby the LESCO application.

Newly established palms that areless than three years old need to be ona maintenance ertilization programbut NO the deciency program. Tey need time to establish a crown which cantake rom three to ve years. Ater thisperiod, i the crown isn’t increasing insize a deciency may be present.

In addition to ertilization to correctnutritional deciencies and maintainproper nutritional balances, Arena saidorganic matter should be added to thesoil, but not piled up against the trunk o the tree. “A palmetto should not look likea telephone pole,” he said. “Te root fare

should be visible at the base o the tree.”Not much can be done about a tree that

is already planted too deeply, but eortscan be made to ensure that soil and otherdebris don’t build up around the baseo the tree. “When a tree is planted toodeeply, it can’t respire properly,” Arenasaid. “Gasses build up that eventually

cause harm to t he tree.”

Arena also cautioned aga inst improperand overly-aggressive pruning. He saidgreen ronds should not be cut unlessabsolutely necessary and old rondsshould be let on the trees until they are completely brown to insure thatphotosynthesis is maximized.

“People may think that their trees willmiraculously heal, but the symptoms willnot disappear,” Arena said. “Leaves thathave suered damage will not recover, but will eventually be replaced by healthy ronds. Our goal is to improve the overallhealth o the trees and keep them in ahealthy and vigorous condition.”

For more inormation on how to take asoil sample or take care o Palmetto trees goto www.clemson.edu or visit the CharlestonCounty Extension Service at 259 Meeting Street (843-722-5940). Ofce hours are  Monday through Friday rom 8:00 a.m. to4:00 p.m.

No, it’s not a holly, although itdoes look like one.

Tis is one o the mostcommon woodland understory shrubs in

eastern North America, occurring romQuebec and Ontario down to exas. It is

present in a wide array o habitats rom lowground to the mountains, and it seems to

preer damp places. It is a shrub that doesvery well in considerable shade.

Sometimes it’s hard to distinguish a

large “shrub” rom a small “tree,” and thisplant is sometimes in between as it can grow

up to seven eet tall. Its leaves are smoothand dark green, and shape-wise, they are

airly boring. In the autumn, though, theleaves put on a terric show, becoming

bright yellow. Its small, yellowish owersappear early in the spring beore its leaves,

and they grow in small clusters up and

down the stems. Tis species is dioecious;that is, individual plants are either male

or emale, and the owers are unisexual.Te owers o “male” plants produce only

pollen, while “emale” plants produceovules and, ultimately, a one-seeded,

eshy ruit. Te ruits are brilliant redand quite conspicuous. Various birds like

to eat the ruits, and so scatter the plants

throughout their habitat. Tis plant is alsoa avorite ood source or the caterpillars

o one o our most spectacular swallowtailbutteries. Tat being said, you might

want to investigate this plant as a residentor your garden. (Remember that it is the

emale plants that make the red berries.)

Tis species is related to a number o other aromatic plants, including sassaras,

camphor tree and red bay. All o theseplants are placed into the laurel amily or

“Lauraceae,” which also includes the truelaurel and avocado.

One o the old-timey common names

or this shrub is “Benjamin-bush.” I’ve

tried to gure out how it got that name,

and here’s my idea: the whole plant isaromatic and pleasantly ragrant. One o

the compounds producing this ragranceis an organic substance reerred to as

“benzoin,” which is ound in a numbero diferent plant groups. Te name

“benzoin” was also applied to a ragrantgum used medicinally. Now, since our

Mystery Plant has a long history o olk

use as a medicinal plant, and is in act asource o the compound benzoin, many

people began calling this plant “Benzoinbush.” But that gradually corrupted into

the name “Benjamin bush,” which wasperhaps a bit less clinical than using the

chemical name. However that namebecame established, the plant has been

used as a source o tea and or medicinal

tonics, as well as or avorul toothpicks.
