fon=grafiKs is an alternative way to write/read English. Te
symbols are called gras. Tesounds are called onz. fon=grafiKs
designates 29 basic onz and corresponding gras to repre-sent the
sounds o spoken English. Tere are two dierent symbol sets in
fon=grafiKs: fono.1and fono.2. fono.1 is an altered version o the
standard alphabet; fono.2 is an entirely newsymbol set in which
groups o similar sounds are represented by groups o similar
symbols.
One major dierence between fon=grafiKsand the alphabet is that
fon=grafiKs is not writtenin words. We do not speak in
discon-nected words. Werunallourwordstogetherwhenwespeak.
fon=grafiKs is written inutterances, ollowing the natural rhythms o
speech.

Whyfon=grafiKs ? Our nervous systems make and use models o the
world. A writing system is a visualmodel o the sounds we make when
talking. Te old alphabet is a disaster. Its been said to be less
than 20%phonetic. No wonder many people have so much trouble
learning to spell/read. Further, there is evidenceto suggest that
imposing such an irrational/disordered system on a sensitive, young
human brain/mind couldresult in permanent physiological damage.
fon=grafiKsis a coherent, ecient and even playul alterna-tive to
the present chaos.
Reading fon=grafiKs is actually an altered state o consciousness
hearing with your eyes.
Among other things, fon=grafiKs (in the orm o fono.1) has been
used to teach listening/speaking skills to students o English as a
second language and as a sort o training alphabet toteach reading
to children and other frst-time readers.
fon=grafiKsis a compromise between accuracy and simplicity,
alling heavily towards simplicity. I madethis compromise, in part,
because I teach listening/speaking skills to adult Asian immigrants
and wanted a
tool I could use in the classroom. Im quite pleased to report
that it has been very successul and popular withmy students.
fon=grafiKswas not created under any illusions as to the
likelihood o its being adopted by the generalpopulation. I am aware
o the shortcomings o a onedik raydyng sisdm.fon=grafiKs is merely
an attemptto devise an optimal system or purely aesthetic
purposes... to satisy my own desire or a better system. It wasgreat
un and very satisying to have been able to accomplish it. I it
catches on... great. I not... so be it.
