Discovery Engine
What is it?
Discovery Engine is new for Version 7.0. The Discovery Engine
utilizes machine learning algorithms to identify similar fonts
and fonts that may pair well together, within the collection
of fonts on your machine. Font classification is also improved
when the Discovery Engine is turned on.
How does it work?
When you first launch Version 7.0, you will have the opportunity
to turn on the Discovery Engine during set up. The initial run of the
Discovery Engine can take a bit of time, as it has to process and
compares each font in your collection against every other font.
When the Discovery Engine is first turned on, the initialization
process runs in the background and will only block Similarity,
Pairing, and Classification. This process will not block any other
functionality. Once the Discovery Engine is completely initialized,
you will receive a notification that Similarity, Pairing,
and Classification features can now be used.

Discovery Engine FAQs
How accurate are the similarity, pairing, and classifications?
The Discovery Engine should match most OTF and TTF fonts, unless
they are symbol fonts, dingbats, or have an inordinate amount
of points per character. Other font formats will not be matched.
If an internet connection is available, FontExplorer X Pro will also use
the existing server-side classification service for even more accuracy.
Can I stop the initialization and start again later?
Yes, but it is best if you do not quit the application during
the Discovery Engine initialization. If you do quit, the process
will need to start over.
Does the Discovery Engine work with all font formats?
No, the Discovery Engine will only process OTF and TTF font files.
All other formats will not receive similarity, pairing, or classification
suggestions.
Why am I not seeing similar fonts or pairing suggestions?
There are a few reasons why this could occur: the Discovery Engine
has not been turned on, there are no matches, or you have selected
more than one font (the Discovery Engine only matches individual
fonts). Also, matches are not provided for fonts managed through the
server. Each reason should display a unique message in the UI.

Classification UI
FEX 7.0 has newly redesigned UI for managing Classifications.
Select a group of fonts to see the current classifications
applied to each. Apply suggested classifications (provided
by the Discovery Engine), browse all available classifications,
or create your own.
Run in the background
With a new setting turned on (on by default), FEX will activate
fonts in other applications without launching the full client
window. Clicking on the icon in the dock will launch
the full window.
New classification UI
When FEX launches in the background,
the icon will be black. When the full client
window is launched, it will go back
to the normal color.
