CHAIRMAN’SCHAIRMAN’S
MESSAGEMESSAGE
CHAIRMAN’S
MESSAGE
Dear Friends,The Foundation held its sixth annual charity golf tournament
on 6 August which saw a gathering of staunch supporters
and well-wishers swinging for a cause. We successfully raised
RM 907,000 - our biggest golf collection to-date, which was
a remarkable achievement despite the current challenging
economic landscape.
This unwavering show of support is testament to our donors’
belief in the work that we do in underserved communities.
The donations we receive help families with basic needs such
as food, providing educational support for children, and job
opportunities for school-leavers. Our efforts are in response
to the government’s clarion call to inject more skills and
entrepreneurship training for members of households in the
lower-income bracket, aimed at giving them a leg-up towards
empowerment and achieving fi nancial stability.
This third quarter of 2016 has seen the renewal of partnerships,
thereby ensuring that community programmes continue
uninterrupted. The Ministry of Urban Wellbeing, Housing and
Local Government (‘KPKT’) has extended ‘Program Titipan
Kasih’ for another two years, allowing MyKasih to continue
to disburse monthly food aid to 1,800 recipient families in 87
locations nationwide.
Caltex kicked off its Fuel Your School campaign in Pahang
and Kelantan, a collaboration with MyKasih that is now well
into its fi fth year. Since 2012, close to RM 1 million worth of
Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)-
related learning materials have been delivered to 187 eligible
classroom projects in 97 schools across 6 states in Peninsular
Malaysia, benefi tting over 60,000 students collectively.
We are also extremely grateful to JTI Malaysia and Cenviro
Group for their sustained efforts in reaching out to feed
fi nancially-strained families who are struggling to put food on
the table.
With the generosity of donors and solid cooperation from a
network of retail partners, MyKasih has touched the lives of
almost 230,000 households nationwide. At the same time,
children living in poverty remain a signifi cant target group to
be carefully assisted. Since the MyKasih ‘Love My School’
student bursary scheme kicked-off in 2012, a total of 10,083
students in 188 schools have been aided.
DIALOG gave much-needed encouragement to the Primary
Year 6 MyKasih students of Sekolah Kebangsaan Bukit
Lanjan (Asli) in Damansara Perdana, Selangor, by sponsoring
two separate study camps to help them prepare for their main
UPSR examinations. We wish them all the best!
The year-end period gives us an opportunity to do Back-To-
School programmes and on that note, we appeal to you to
help bring smiles to children who otherwise cannot afford a
new set of school shoes, uniform, bag and books.
As we look forward to ending 2016 on a high note, I would
also like to extend my appreciation to the dedicated staff of
MyKasih Foundation, who have been working tirelessly to
continuously improve on our welfare delivery mechanism to the
masses. We remain steadfast in our mission to create loving
and caring neighbourhoods, by engineering and delivering
life-transformation programmes for the communities we care
for.
My wife and I thank you all from the bottom of our hearts for
the love and encouragement which keeps us going.

who is also the Chair of Kedah‘s Committee on Women,
Agriculture and Agro-based Industry, and Entrepreneur
Development.
“We are thrilled to be given this opportunity to work with
MyKasih Foundation and Yayasan Prihatin Rakyat Kedah

The RM 250,000 donated that day would be distributed
to 150 low-income households and 100 students from
economically-challenged families in Pendang, Kedah. Under
the one-year aid programme, food aid benefi ciaries will
receive a cashless monthly allowance of RM 80 through their
MyKad account, which can be spent on approved essential
food items at partner retail outlets nearby.
The 100 selected primary school student benefi ciaries of SJK
(C) Junun and SK Sungai Siput would each receive RM 60
per month through their MyKasih student smartcards. The
students could draw upon those allowances to pay for their
daily meals in school canteen, as well as learning materials
such as books and stationery from the school bookstore.
The collaboration between Cenviro and MyKasih Foundation
started last year with the fi rst RM 1 million being channelled
to 1,000 economically-challenged families in Kedah via
MyKasih’s MyKad-based cashless payment system.
“We chose to continue the partnership with MyKasih
Foundation because we have confi dence in the effi cient
welfare distribution system which uses MyKad technology.
This corporate responsibility programme also helps Cenviro
to effectively play its role as a responsible corporate citizen,”
added Khalid Bahsoon.
In thanking Cenviro for their contribution and partnership,
Siti Khairon said, “Cenviro’s renewed commitment for a
second year of collaboration is very encouraging indeed. It
will certainly complement on-going efforts by other welfare
agencies to alleviate the fi nancial burden faced by families
and ensure their overall wellbeing.”
“We deeply value Cenviro’s trust and faith in our welfare
delivery mechanism and we hope this partnership will
continue to fl ourish. We are optimistic that their community
initiatives will inspire others to come on board and render
targeted assistance to those in need,” added Siti Khairon.
Others present that day were Cenviro Group’s Directors,
Shahazwan Harris and Yang Berbahagia Datin Paduka Che
Asmah binti Ibrahim, and MyKasih Foundation Managing
Director, Jeffrey Perera.

On July 19, 2016, JTI Malaysia announced that the joint community initiative this year covered urban and sub-urban poor communities in six states namely Sabah, Johor, Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, Perak and Selangor. This marks the fourth consecutive year of the collaboration between JTI Malaysia and MyKasih.

Recipients are able to use their MyKad to purchase essential food items at partner retail outlets nearby.
JTI Malaysia Managing Director Guilherme Silva applauded the programme which has been one of the company’s key Community Investment initiatives.
“We are honoured to be able to continue supporting MyKasih’s noble initiative in providing for families in need, where the funds are channeled effectively. Our successful and continuous collaboration over the past four years represents a great synergistic effort to help the less fortunate.”

This partnership demonstrates JTI Malaysia’s continued belief in MyKasih’s effi cient, transparent and accountable cashless welfare distribution system and we hope that this partnership will continue to fl ourish for the benefi t of the community,” added Tan Sri Dr Ngau.

PDK Cenwaey Penaney holds fi rst Sports Day for Semai Orang Asli students.
Students of PDK Cenwaey Penaney showing teamwork as they run towards the fi nishing line during their fi rst annual Sports Day event. The PDK
Cenwaey Penaney community learning centre (seen in the background) caters to 100 school-going children, including pre-schoolers, who benefi t from
learning modules which were specifi cally developed to bridge mainstream elementary and cultural pedagogy.
PDK Cenwaey Penaney, a community learning centre built
in the Semai indigenous villages of Ulu Tual, northwest of
Pahang, organised its inaugural Sports Day event over a
sunny weekend in July 2016.
Located about 23km from the nearest paved road, this rural
learning centre caters to about 100 school-going children,
and was the fi rst educational establishment to benefi t from
the MyKasih Orang Asli Children’s Education Fund.
Children and youth dressed in their Sports House colours of
red, blue, green and yellow, were blazing through marked-out
trails during the cross-country competition.
Pre-schoolers participated in age-appropriate games such
as arranging cans in order of numbers, carrying sand using
a banana leaf to fi ll up a bottle, and peeling as many young
beetle nuts as they could within a time limit.
The bigger children were involved in pole-climbing (a team
activity), 100m running events (individual and in pairs), long
jump, and bowling using coconuts. Family telematches
include Tarik Upih (parents pulling coconut fronds with their
child seated on it) and building a bicycle using tapioca plants.
For MyKasih Foundation, it was a truly memorable weekend
to witness the happy and healthy children. Donors John and
Edwina Thornton, who supported the centre’s operations
via the MyKasih Orang Asli Children’s Education Fund this
2016, presented prizes to the winners of the cross-country
event and held a book-reading and sing-along session with
the children.

MyKasih Orang Asli Children’s Education Fund
MyKasih Foundation Co-Founder, Puan Sri Jean Ngau,
launched the ‘MyKasih Orang Asli Children’s Education
Fund’ in June 2015 to support the learning journey of
children from urban and rural indigenous communities
in both national schools as well as community-based
learning centres. It is a step towards empowering
indigenous Malaysians - by giving the children their
fundamental right to education and all the joy of learning
that comes with it.
PDK Cenwaey Penaney is a wonderful example of a
learning center constructed out of pure enthusiasm and
dedication by the community members who understand
the value and importance of education and are committed
to seeing the project work for the betterment of their
children.
MyKasih hopes our friends and business associates
will support this cause and contribute towards the
Fund which is targeted towards the marginalised and
oppressed Orang Asli communities of Malaysia.
John and Edwina Thornton awarded the winners with trophies and
hampers.

During the visit on 2 July 2016 for the Sports Day event,
MyKasih had the opportunity to ask her about her students’
progress. She shared her observations, as summarised
below.
On student enrolment
“We have had new students (both adults and children) enrolling
into PDK Cenwaey Penaney ever since we began organising
fun and engaging activities, for example, this community
Sports Day and a weaving workshop we conducted a few
months ago for the womenfolk. We now have a total of 159
registered students.”
On student attendance
“There are times when attendance would dip, especially
during the harvesting season when the students would follow
their parents into the forest to harvest produce to sell for cash
income. This is an important socio-economic activity for the
entire community.”
On students’ interests and achievements
“The students now understand the learning methods and
concepts in PDK. We always hold creative and fun activities,
like drawing or art, after their writing lessons. Some of these
sessions are done outdoors. They have become more open
about sharing their opinions on a certain topics concerning
A moment withJenita Engi
their drawings, which they use to express their thoughts and
feelings. Their confi dence levels have improved and they can
demonstrate self-discipline.”
“The obvious growth in personal development I could observe
is in terms of their confi dent interaction with their teachers
and mentors. They used to be shy and quiet.”
“Their writing abilities have improved too, however, more
effort is required in the reading and pronunciation of long
words and sentences.”
“We are constantly encouraging students to be actively
involved in the organisation of PDK’s events. This inculcates
the spirit of teamwork, strengthen family ties and bonds with
other community members, and teaches them about healthy
competition.”
On parents’ involvement
“The parents do not get involved in the day-to-day lessons
at the centre, unless it is during community events like this
Sports Day and health screening activities. Separately, we
have conducted weaving workshops for the womenfolk and
organised study tours to Kuala Lumpur during big national-
level crafts events. The main aim is for them to learn how
to produce and sell quality handicrafts to earn income, and
more importantly, to preserve their indigenous knowledge
and cultural identity.”
Fuelling the Orang asli learning journey
Built in September 2014 with funding support from organisations and well-wishers, the PDK Cenwaey Penaney community
learning centre is shared by two neighbouring villages – Kampung Tual A and Kampung Tual B, which collectively have a
population of 600 Semai people, 166 of whom are children aged between 7 and 12 years.
100 of these children attend regular primary school in Pos Sinderut, although the children face a daily transport dilemma which
prevents them from getting to school on time. With only two 4WD vehicles available to ferry up to 60 children to school each
day starting at 4am, there will be children who will have to be turned away.
PDK Cenwaey Penaney was established within the Ulu Tual community itself to cater to students who get left behind. It runs
after-school programmes to bridge the gap between mainstream education and the transmission of traditional pedagogy that
is crucial in maintaining the culture and identity of the Orang Asli.
Critical to PDK Cenwaey Penaney’s mission to educate the Orang Asli children is Jenita Engi, an enthusiastic teacher of
Temuan ethnicity, who completed her Diploma in Early Childhood Education at SEGi College. She has been instrumental in
developing teaching modules which relate to the community’s culture, lifestyle and tradition.

Jenita’s lessons do not only cover mainstream educational modules
but also relates to the culture and identity of the Orang Asli.
The children enjoy art class as they are able to express themselves freely
through their drawings. Jenita then uses their artwork for storytelling
to reinforce cultural and traditional knowledge, and at the same time, to
discuss issues facing the Orang Asli community.

Graduates of the Mengecapi Aspirasi Diri (MAD)
empowerment and entrepreneurship programme sponsored
by Mubadala Petroleum (MP) were given the opportunity to
participate in additional training programmes conducted by
Kolej Komuniti Miri, to enhance their skills and further develop
their businesses for better income generation.
The graduates participated in three skills training programmes
in the month of September at Kolej Komuniti Miri, MyKasih’s
training partner in Miri, Sarawak. Aimed at equipping
participants with valuable knowledge to further enhance their
existing skills, the participants of the programme are now able
to provide additional services to earn income in their chosen
businesses.
On 3 September 2016, 25 ladies participated in a ‘Bread,
Bun and Mini Pizza Class’ in Kolej Komuniti Miri.
“I requested for this training as I saw that there is a demand
for buns in Miri. Bakeries are popping up everywhere but
not everyone can afford the buns and cakes. That is where I
come in and fi ll in the gap. Now I can sell bread and buns to
my customers in my village at a more affordable price,” said
Rita Sigau.
“I learnt to think like a businesswoman in the MAD programme
and now I see opportunities everywhere! Thank you Mubadala
for all that they have done for us,” she added.

“When I received the text message from MyKasih calling for
participants in the cupcake class, I called MyKasih immediately
to register! I want to be a pastry chef when I graduate. This
is the fi rst step towards my dreams. Thank you Mubadala for

The success and achievements of the MyKasih families
inspires and motivates us to continue to serve the poor. Make
a difference in the life of someone needy today,” he ended.
A participant putting on the fi nishing touches to her bright cupcakes!
From 17 to 18 September 2016 the men of the MyKasih
families took part in the Cement Ferro Class in Kolej Komuniti
Miri.
“I am currently working as a part-time labourer in a construction
company and my income stream is inconsistent. I decided to
learn about cement ferro to supplement my income by selling
my creations to friends in the landscaping business. It is a lot
of heavy work, but I am used to that,” said Dahlan Edin.
“I am no longer dependent on one source of income.
Mubadala has made this possible for me.”
Almost done! A participant painting sections of the cement ferro.
To shape the cement into stools, the consistency has to be just right. Not
too wet and not too dry. These two young men were doing a great job!
From 2012 through to year 2015, Mubadala Petroleum
(MP) supported a total of 200 underprivileged families
under the MyKasih ‘Love My Neighbourhood’ food aid
programme and 100 primary school students under the
MyKasih ‘Love My School’ bursary programme in Miri,
Sarawak. Upon addressing a key issue in poverty, namely
food and nutrition, MP also recognises that health,
education and training are essential elements in helping
underprivileged families rise out of poverty.
A company that wants to make a large impact in the lives
of families under their care, MP has invested in the future
of the families under their care by sponsoring programmes
such as the Score A Online Tuition programme, Youths
Take Charge programme, the MAD empowerment
and entrepreneurship programme and fi nancial literacy
programmes.
A healthy body breeds a healthy mind. Another important
and often overlooked aspect of poverty is health. In the
past four years, Mubadala Petroleum has sponsored
three health screenings, health talks and dental checks
for their MyKasih families. The health checks covered
blood pressure, glucose and cholesterol levels and BMI
measurements. Participants are also individually advised
on healthy eating habits and leading a healthier lifestyle.
The dental checks are extended to the children and some
minor procedures are conducted onsite to prevent further
tooth decay. Health talks cover topics such as sexually
transmitted diseases, cancer (cervical and breast) and
more.

A Letter of GratitudeRopiah Darsono, an aid recipient under Mubadala Petroleum’s sponsorship in Miri, Sarawak from year 2012 to 2013,
has been an active participant in MyKasih programmes including the MAD Entrepreneurship programme, the computer
classes for adults, baking and cooking classes. Below is a letter to MyKasih Foundation from Ropiah’s eldest son, Miqdad.
Through our programmes, we hope to impact not only the aid recipient (usually the mother), but the whole family.
We thank Mubadala Petroleum for entrusting MyKasih with their CSR programmes in Miri, Sarawak and we hope other
organisations will also support us in our objective towards poverty alleviation.
30 August 2016
Salam MyKasih Foundation,
I am writing to you to express my gratitude for helping my mother, Ropiah binti Darsono, through the food aid programme. To
be honest, MyKasih Foundation, together with Mubadala Petroleum and Life Coach Sharmini from Lifeworks, did not just help
my mother, but my whole family too.
My mother fi nally had the courage to attend a job interview and was hired as a Guru KAFA (religious teacher). I got accepted
into Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS to do a Bachelor’s Degree in Petroleum Geoscience, with support from the Yayasan
Peneraju Pendidikan Bumiputera scholarship.
My brother A’sim is currently pursuing a Bachelor in Civil Engineering at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak with aid from PTPTN
(National Higher Education Fund Corporation).
MyKasih Foundation has also helped my sister, Hafi za, in fi nding a scholarship after she got straight A’s in her fi nal Form 5
SPM examinations. She received a scholarship from Jabatan Perkhidmatan Awam to study Engineering, but her determination
to become a doctor could not be suppressed. She is now doing her Foundation in Medicine at Universiti Islam Antarabangsa
Malaysia and hopefully she will obtain a scholarship when she starts her degree course.
On top of that, my father was given the opportunity to perform Hajj this year. Alhamdulillah. So many good things have
happened to our family.
On behalf of my family, once again, I would like to express our deep appreciation to MyKasih, Mubadala Petroleum and
Lifeworks for the support.
If possible, I would like MyKasih to forward this message to them and to any person or companies which have helped to make
the food aid programme a successful one.
Thank you
Regards,
MOHD MIQDAD BIN YUSREE

ROOTING FOR A HEALTHIER FUTUREEdible garden project by Sekolah Kebangsaan Bukit Lanjan (Asli) for crucial life skills,
nutrition, and community economic development.
Dialog Group Berhad (‘DIALOG’) supported its adopted
school in Damansara Perdana, Selangor, with a seed grant
of RM 10,000 to help the school build its edible garden of
vegetables, herbs and fruits.
The ‘OA Greens’ edible garden project, which is being
spearheaded and jointly funded by the Rotary Club of Lake
Gardens Kuala Lumpur, was kicked off on 9 August 2016
in conjunction with the International Day for the World’s
Indigenous Peoples 2016, aptly themed ‘Indigenous Peoples
and Education’.
DIALOG has been rendering assistance to Sekolah
Kebangsaan Bukit Lanjan’s majority indigenous students
since January 2014 via the MyKasih ‘Love My School’
bursary programme. To-date, DIALOG has channeled close
to RM 200,000 to ensure that the students’ nutritional and
educational needs are met.
DIALOG Executive Chairman, Tan Sri Dr Ngau Boon
Keat, who is also Chairman and Co-Founder of MyKasih
Foundation, said, “We are blessed that the entire school
community – its teachers, students and their parents, are
extremely committed in seeing the project through. We are
grateful to the school for providing a space for this meaningful
movement, which DIALOG and other interested members of
the public can jointly participate in.”
Tan Sri Dr Ngau added, “The students are building a healthy
community by growing their own food system for nourishment
through this gardening exercise. Their efforts will certainly
facilitate a greater awakening by setting an example for others
to follow.”

Project ‘OA Greens’ aims to cover four fundamental elements:
1. NUTRITION: Giving primary school children and the
economically-challenged community at large access to
proper nutrition and thereby ensuring food security.
2. LIFE SKILLS: Providing experiential learning of valuable
life skills, i.e. producing food. Children who are not so
academically-inclined (especially the Pendidikan Khas
special needs students) will be creatively engaged and not
feel demotivated in the classroom.
3. LITERACY: Imparting crucial fundamentals of fi nancial
management, environmental consciousness, and social
responsibility among the children. The school teachers
also plan to use the garden to each Bahasa Malaysia,
English, Mathematics and Science.
4. ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT: Assisting the school to
become fi nancially stronger (by way of sales of vegetables
and seedlings) to ensure their students’ overall wellbeing
by continuously maintaining and upgrading school facilities
for a safe and conducive learning environment.
School Headmaster Khairul Anuar said, “We deeply appreciate
the on-going support from DIALOG since the beginning of
2014 and more recently, Rotary’s interest in our students’
wellbeing. Any social investment in meeting the nutritional
and educational needs of the students and their families are
positive steps towards bringing about equity of the Orang Asli
in society.”
“The edible garden is a wonderful community project for
people from all walks of life to come together and interact.
It will also provide the school with a means of generating
income through the sale of fruits and vegetables, seeds and
seedlings, to enable us to continuously provide for a safe and
conducive learning environment for our students,” added
Khairul Anuar.
The primary students were engaged through workshops
conducted by Ecocentric Transitions, to introduce them to
gardening and to envision what the garden will look like.
The students had fun rolling seedballs and then leaving them in the sun
to dry.

Caltex Fuel Your School 2016 extends support
into Pahang and KelantanEnhancing learning experience for students in high-need schools
For the fi fth consecutive year, Chevron Malaysia Limited,
which markets the Caltex® brand, allocated RM250,000 to
continue its annual Caltex Fuel Your School programme in
partnership with MyKasih Foundation, this time, in Kelantan
and Pahang.
The programme is designed to support the education
of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics
(collectively known as ‘STEM’) in public schools located in
various communities where Caltex operates. Caltex Fuel Your
School provides teachers with essential tools and resources,
including hands-on project materials that often do not receive
funding from traditional sources.
Between 2012 and 2015, the Caltex Fuel Your School
initiative had raised and funded RM 967,967.67 worth of
STEM-related learning materials for 187 eligible classroom
projects in 97 schools across 6 states in Peninsular Malaysia,
benefi tting over 60,000 students collectively.
“With the right learning tools and materials for STEM subjects,
teachers can help motivate and prepare students to become
engineers, doctors or scientists. The main objectives of
this community campaign are to promote innovation and
economic development, and pave bright futures for these
young people,” said Chevron Malaysia Limited’s Country
Chairman, Shahid Ahmed.
“We believe that education is one of the most signifi cant
indicators of social progress. We hope our ongoing efforts
via the Fuel Your School programme will contribute towards
a better learning environment for students, especially in high-
need schools,” Shahid added.
This year’s program reaches out to public schools in Kelantan
and Pahang, with a total of 50 classroom projects to be
awarded collectively by the end of November. From July 1
to July 31 2016, Caltex contributed RM2 for every purchase
of RON95 or RON97 using the Caltex JOURNEY® Card at
participating Caltex service stations in Kelantan and Pahang.
The selection of projects eligible for funding will be based
on the creative and innovative use of the requested project
materials, which promote hands-on learning experience in
the classroom and those that meet existing school curriculum
objectives.
Chairman and Co-Founder of MyKasih Foundation Tan Sri
Dr Ngau Boon Keat said, “We would like to thank Caltex
for giving MyKasih Foundation the opportunity to support
such a meaningful initiative aimed at creating a nurturing
learning environment for the children. This is in line with our
Foundation’s mission to assist students in their pursuit of
academic excellence.”
“We are extremely proud to be associated with the Caltex
Fuel Your School programme, which is now entering its fi fth
year. The continued collaboration demonstrates Chevron
Malaysia’s trust and faith in MyKasih Foundation to uphold
the integrity of the programme by ensuring that funds reach
the targeted benefi ciaries and are judiciously used for the
intended purpose. We look forward to a successful campaign
in Pahang and Kelantan,” added Tan Sri Dr Ngau Boon Keat.
The Caltex Fuel Your School 2016 programme is expected
to conclude in November 2016 with the delivery of learning
materials for winning classroom projects.

Hari Raya treat for MyKasih students
80 primary school children were treated to a morning of
shopping at Giant’s newly opened outlet in Setapak, Kuala
Lumpur. The outing was hosted by GCH Retail (Malaysia) Sdn
Bhd in conjunction with the ‘Ceria Ramadan Bersama Giant &
Adabi’ event, a joint charity initiative between Giant and food
company, Adabi.
The 80 children, who are MyKasih student benefi ciaries from
the Damansara Perdana community in Selangor, received
shopping vouchers worth RM 200 each to spend on clothes,
shoes and other basic necessities for the Hari Raya Aidilfi tri
celebrations.
One of the students, who came to Giant that Saturday
morning wearing completely worn-out house slippers, was
overjoyed to receive a new pair of shoes of her choice.
Other activities held that day included the cooking and
distribution of the traditional ‘Bubur Lambuk’ (porridge) to
customers visiting Giant Hypermarket Setapak, an annual
Ramadan month-long tradition which Giant and Adabi had
started together in 2013.
GCH Retail (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd Regional Director for Malaysia
and Brunei, Dato’ Tim Ashdown said, “We are truly privileged
to be able to carry out our duties as a responsible corporate
citizen. Charity initiatives such as this enables us to engage
with our customers and at the same time, reach out to those
less fortunate”.
“We are committed to keep this tradition going for years to
come for the benefi t of the community where we operate,”
added Ashdown.

Year 6 students of Sekolah Kebangsaan Bukit Lanjan (Asli) in Damansara Perdana undergoing intensive revision classes with their subject
teacher during the week-long UPSR examination period.
Asli students get morale boost in the
run-up to their final examinations
In an activity locally referred to as ‘Perkampungan UPSR’,
eighteen Year 6 students of Sekolah Kebangsaan Bukit
Lanjan (Asli) in Damansara Perdana, Selangor, and their
subject teachers camped in school for fi ve days throughout
the UPSR examination period of 5-9 September 2016.
The students were given intensive revision classes and tips on
how to effectively handle examination questions.
Their School Headmaster, Khairul Anuar, said, “This
Perkampungan activity is an effective way for us to ensure
that the students receive suffi cient rest, adequate nutrition
through regular wholesome meals, and are not distracted by
goings-on at home or in the community.”
“The teachers then have their undivided attention and can
get them to focus during revision sessions. We spend a great
deal of time motivating these students and re-emphasising
that education is the best way out of poverty and hardship,”
added Khairul Anuar.
Sekolah Kebangsaan Bukit Lanjan (Asli) is a majority Orang
Asli primary school located in Damansara Perdana. All of its
164 students, including the pre-schoolers, come from low-
income households.
Since January 2014, DIALOG has been sponsoring 70 of its
students through the MyKasih ‘Love My School’ programme,
where each student receives monthly bursaries worth RM
60 to spend on meals at the school canteen and learning
materials from the school bookshop. They also receive ‘Back-
To-School’ provisions during the year-end school holiday
period.
MyKasih Foundation Co-Founder Puan Sri Jean Ngau
supported the Perkampungan event amounting to RM 17,000
via the MyKasih Orang Asli Children’s Education Fund which
she had launched last year. The funds were used to purchase
their camping beds, pillows and sleeping bags, as well as
their meals throughout the study camp. The same batch of
students were also sent off for a two-day UPSR Study Camp
organised by Berita Harian earlier in August.
MyKasih Foundation Chairman, Tan Sri Dr Ngau Boon Keat,
said, “My wife and I fi rmly believe that educating children is
the most sustainable approach towards poverty alleviation.
We would like to encourage and support the children in any
way we can to help them excel in their studies.”
Nationwide, Year 6 students sit for Bahasa Malaysia, English
Language, Mathematics, and Science papers for their fi nal
UPSR examinations. The results will be announced towards
year end.
