A Time for Harvest, a Time for ThanksKent Nerbum said, “Care less for your harvest than for how it is shared, and your life will have meaning and your heart will have peace.” The sharing of the harvest is in full swing and at Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes, we are thankful and in awe of the community that comes together in this act of sharing.

Through small acts of kindness – a modest monthly donation or a bag of do-nated food – and large gifts of generosity – local businesses hosting a food drive – we are all participants in the community goal to make sure we all have enough this season. Special thanks go out to those vendors who help support our mission: Galesburg Meat Co., Kono’s, Rollerworld, Harding’s Friendly Markets, Sarkozy Bakery, D & W Fresh Market, Mall City Containers, Central Marketing Ser-vices, Inc., Rajzer Farms, Druskovich Farms, Pepperidge Farm, Stafford-Smith, Big Apple Bagels, Great Harvest Bread Co., Griffin Pest Solutions, Lindsey Dedi-cated Services, Inc., and many more.

From fresh bread to produce, to cardboard boxes and vehicle maintenance, local partners like these support Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes so that we can meet emergency food needs head-on. You know how critical it is that each of us has access to enough nutritious food to support an active, healthy life. You know – and you act on that.

Roberts and Amidon state in their book, Life Prayers, “In times of major change and social stress, people are challenged to stand up for what they believe.” I don’t know if this moment is the most difficult, but I do know that it’s a major struggle for many. Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes’ simple response – food for people in need – makes a difference. These responses are possible because of your actions, whether through gifts of food, funds, time or services, during these difficult times.

Art Against Hunger with KIAOnce again Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes is part-nering with the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts to bring you Art Against Hunger, a season long food drive combined with live music and gallery walk events.“Art Against Hunger’s intent is to call attention

to a growing concern in our community, as well as create an opportunity to visit the KIA,” said Joe Bower, development director at the KIA.

Join us at the KIA on Nov.19 from 5:30 – 7:30 for Art & All That Jazz, an informal evening of food, entertainment, and community awareness, with live music from Afro-Cuban jazz band Mas Que Nada and free appetizers from Panera Bread. Admission is $3 or free with a non-perishable food donation dropped off at the KIA.

For more information, call Kimberly Schoet-zow at 488-2617 ext. 218.

Don’t miss Art Hop on October 1!Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes Food Director Marv King will be exhibiting his nature photographs at Gazelle Sports on the Kalamazoo Mall. 10% of his sales will benefit KLF plus a matching gift from Gazelle. There will also be a silent auction on one of Marv’s photographs.

KLF/Panera Partnership ContinuesFor several years, Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes has benefitted from Panera Bread’s generous customers through Operation Dough-Nation, a yearly fund collection at area Panera stores. This year’s dona-tion from Panera will be presented at the Nov. 19 Art & All That Jazz event at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts.

“We are excited to present this year’s check to Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes, knowing that it will mean that over $50,000 has been donated since we started collecting donations at our cafés,” said Brian Campbell, marketing director at Trigo Hospitality.

We thank Panera and their customers for another success-ful year of collect-ing funds to help feed hungry people throughout this community.

To mark MHG’s 20th anniversary, the goal has been set high at $800,000 and 300,000 pounds of food to meet the increased need for emergency food resources statewide. Community partners Bronson Methodist Hospital, Borgess Health, Charter Communications, and local State of Michigan offices are once again col-lecting both food and funds to benefit Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes emergency food programs.

“During a recent tour of Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes, empty shelves were not-ed,” said Sharon Ritchie, executive secretary at Borgess Health. “The need in-creases due to the poor economy and Borgess associates want to make a difference in the lives of our community members.”

Last year Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes received over 30,000 pounds of food through MHG and we’re hopeful that even more food will be collected this year to help supply our 26 choice pantries throughout the County.

Be an Advocate for the Hungry and HomelessRecently, Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes served a family of eight that was homeless and living in their van while the father searched for em-ployment. An in-creasing number of Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes’ clients are struggling to maintain their housing, making difficult decisions about paying the rent or mort-gage and still putting a meal on the table.

Nov. 14 – 20 is National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week and Ka-lamazoo Loaves & Fishes is encouraging

community mem-bers to sign up for our new electronic Advocacy News-letter, Table Talk, to learn about

ways to enact change in our community. Did you know that in 2008, over 3,600 people in Kalamazoo County were

homeless? Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes helps by supporting several commu-nity meal programs, but there is more to do. We need your help in advocating for legislation that supports the rights of low-income people. Through our new e-Newsletter, you’ll receive infor-mation on policies and programs, and ways to get involved, six times a year. See the insert for information on a vol-unteer opportunity in support of this national week of awareness.

Volunteer Picnic October 7Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes would like to invite you to our annual Vol-unteer Harvest picnic on Oct. 7. This is a time to mingle, meet other volun-teers, and get to know the KLF staff. The picnic will be in our warehouse at 913 E. Alcott, from 5 – 7 p.m. Please bring a dish to pass. RSVP to Laura Winther at 488-2617 ext. 209 or [email protected].
