2. R-22 is going away

Starting 2010 as a result of phaseout of HCFCs agreed to under the Montreal protocol, virgin R-22 cannot be supplied or even used in the EU. On-site recycled R-22 or reclaimed R-22 will be phased out by the end of 2014.

As many systems are still operating on R-22, companies within the EU are looking for quick and cost effective retrofit options for their applications in commercial refrigeration and air conditioning systems so that they can continue to operate.

EDEKA-Markt in Germany refrigeration conversion

The general conversion of existing R22 refrigeration units to non-ozone depleting refrigerants at an EDEKA-Markt store in Fuldabrück-Dörnhagen, Germany, included the first ever retrofit of a supermarket low temperature refrigeration unit to DuPont™ ISCEON® MO29 (R-422D). A total of 122 kg of R-22 refrigerant were replaced, of which 67 kg were in the medium temperature refrigeration unit at the store, and 55 kg in the low temperature unit. Work carried out on both units was completed within one day, and without disrupting business at the store. No technical modifications were required.

The German harbour logistics company, Hamburger Hafen Logistik AG (HHLA), acting on the advice of its refrigeration contractor Dresdner Kühlanlagenbau (DKA) and DuPont Refrigerants, reacted promptly to changes in EU refrigerants regulations by initiating a pilot project to convert several refrigerated warehouses to the non-ozone-depleting DuPont™ ISCEON® refrigerant. Virtually no technical modifications to the unit were required and operations were not disrupted by the conversion, saving both precious time and money.

4. Food refrigeration case studies


UK fruit producer J.A. Colthup & Partners in Chilham converted their pumped circulation refrigeration system to DuPont™ ISCEON® MO29 (R-422D). A viable, cost-effective and non-ozone depleting alternative to R22 in such equipment, the successful conversion to ISCEON® MO29 has helped the company avoid the risk of dependence on recycled or reclaimed R22 or the costly replacement of existing equipment.

This product and new blends from it are in field tests in commercial refrigeration application with the objective to make them the new industry standards.
