We are excited to announce that the Foodies program is expanding to Roxby DownsThere is great excitement in Roxby with a new community space and kitchen justcompleted

Here are some recent statistics for theprogram (captures reporting period Oct2015 shy April 2016)

Number of Foodies across SA 103Metro Foodies 57Country South Foodies 30Country North Foodies 16

A session refers to either a one off education session one week of a program or anevent Number of foodie sessions 156Metro Foodie sessions 59Country South sessions 78Country North sessions 19

This is a great achievement for this period of time as it covers December and Januarywhich are usually quieter times for foodie activities

Some of the types of programs that have been delivered in the community includeMenrsquos Shed Healthy Cooking Healthy budget cookingMulticultural cooking demonstrationFresh Food and FunAustralian Guide to Healthy EatingHealthy lunchboxes and sugar in drinks demo at Aboriginal Womenrsquos Shed Tastings of Easy Feast Meal Packs at Community Food SA Please read the updates from across the state later in this newsletter for more detail ofsessions delivered

In addition to program activities there have been some community events such as AntishyPoverty BBQ Childrenrsquos Week Expo and FoodbankSalvation Army Preshy ChristmasMarket One foodie has been working closely with a community lunch program at acommunity centre helping to improve the nutrition of those meals and cover costs withgreat success There have been over 1500 participants in Foodie programsactivities in this past 6month period with 900 participants in Easy Feast tastings and community events

This is a fantastic achievement and foodies should feel very proud of the work they havedone

Foodie TrainingSince our last newsletter back in 2015 new foodies have trained in Mannum(Murraylands Foodies) and Parafield Gardens (Foodies joined Western and Northerngroup) As this newsletter goes out training has just wrapped up in Mt Barker forHillsFleurieu foodies and training has just begun in Roxby Downs and southern metro We welcome all our new foodies to the program

Updates from Students shy Foodies Evaluation As part of my project with Community Foodies I was able to present some workshops tothe Marion and Onkaparinga Foodies groups Hopefully the groups found these were agood refresh tool for running the Sugar in Drinks and Label Reading activities to groupsBoth Foodie groups were very involved during the presentations and Irsquod love to mentiona special thank you to Cathy and Sharon who gave me a lot of ideas and feedback aboutthese I hope everyone in the groups went home with some new information

The workshops have now been made into two short video clips for Foodies to watchbefore they go and present these activities to groups within the community They will bein the Exchange very soon for you to view them In the future wersquore hoping that more willbe created and the presentations happen at each sitersquos catch ups

Irsquod like to also thank all the Foodies Carolyn and Sophie for having me out at CommunityFoodies The experience has been really wonderful and the Foodies have all been sonice and welcoming to myself and Matilda Thank you for the opportunity

As a part of my project whilst on placement with Community Foodies I was lucky enoughto film four short interviews with some lovely Western and Northern Foodies to talk abouttheir experience as a Foodie I would like to thank all of the Foodies who were willing toshare their stories with meshy it was a pleasure to hear all of the fantastic things you haveachieved as a Foodie I would also like to thank the Foodies who gave me helpfulfeedback to assist in changing the general structure of the interviews to ensure it met theneeds and wants of the Foodies

These interviews will now be edited into a short video to create a promotional resourcecalled Foodie Stories The Foodie Stories will be used to promote the CommunityFoodies program in the community and orientate new Foodies to the program duringtheir training When finalised the Foodie Stories will be made available for all theFoodies and updates will be provided as this exciting project progresses

Finally thank you again to all the Foodies who helped me with this process and providingme with the opportunity to hear about your experiences as a Foodie Foodies are truly aninspiring group of people and I am grateful to have played a role in creating this video toshare your experiences with the wider community

New OpportunitiesCommunity Foodies and Red Cross are working in partnership to meet theneeds of the community in regards to healthy eating programs To pilot thisfoodies across some areas of the metro region have been invited to be trainedin the Red Cross program FoodREDi This is a 6 week program that coversfood safety food budgeting smart shopping healthy eating and cooking Thefirst FoodREDi program to be delivered by foodies will be happening in June Stay tuned for further information and opportunities for foodies to be involved

New Resources There are now a number of standardised programs that are available forfoodies to access to use in community sessions and programs The hope isthat these can be used to cut down on your planning time and so you do notneed to develop programs from scratch There are session outlinespowerpoint slides (these can also be printed out) and a range of handouts foreach topic You can use them as a complete package or take ideas or sectionsfrom them depending on the target group you are working with and the programyou are doing You can access the resources on the exchange

Country South The Foodies program has continued to be very active in Mt Gambier with twoFoodies running ongoing programs Bronnie continues to work at the JunctionCentre with community members who have experienced mental health issuesVickie and Helen collaborate at the Mt Gambier Community Centre where theyrun a Budget Cooking program on a weekly basis for people with disabilities Jen Vonnie and Helen have been delivering programs for vulnerable youthtogether with Carers SA and the District Council of Grant These have beenenthusiastically received by young people and we look forward to doing furtherwork with these groups

In Murray Bridge Jennifer and Desi completed a Menrsquos cooking program atthe Murraylands Mens Shed before Christmas and we have been asked towork with the Aboriginal Sobriety Group to work with men to deliver a cookingprogram in Murray Bridge We hope to be able to deliver this program soonJennifer has acted as a mentor with a cook at the Murray Bridge CommunityCentre to assist with planning healthy affordable meals as part of their Monday

lunch program This program will utilise produce from the Community Garden tosupport the message of ldquoGrow Harvest Eatrdquo Leisa continues toenthusiastically promote healthy eating to children and parents in Mannum JoshyAnne has been working with OPAL at the Murray Bridge High School to supportbasic cooking skills amongst youth and also had more than 200 people drinkingfruit and herb flavoured water via lsquoWater tastingrdquo activity at the recent KiteFestival

Finally the HillsFleurieu group has also been delivering Mens Cookingprograms at Yankalilla and Linda has also used her professional fishmongeringskills to teach fishermen how to fillet fish Sandy and Colleen explored usingpulses with another Mens cooking group from the Hut at Aldgate and Sandrahas also supported a cooking group in her retirement village and delivered aHealthy Lunchbox session at Goolwa with a group from CLASS

Another new group of Foodies will complete training in May at Mt Barker Thisgroup of eleven new Foodies includes two Foodies from Murray Bridge twofrom the Fleurieu and seven from the Hills Several of these Foodies programare being supported by the Hut Disability SA and accare to deliver healthyeating programs as volunteers or within their paid positions showing the valuethat is placed upon nutrition knowledge and skills by our partners

Country North There are currently 8 foodie volunteers based in Port Lincoln The volunteershave facilitated 2 Fresh Food and Fun 6 week programs and undertakennumerous oneshyoff activities within the Community Some of the organisations in Port Lincoln who have had the advantage ofFoodie volunteers working with them are Family and Relationship ServiceMental Illness Fellowship of SA Correctional services reshyintegration programand some local support groups who meet regularly

Currently the volunteers are anticipating involvement in a Community event forNational Families Week This will be a great opportunity to promote healthyeating and get some key messages out there There is opportunity to advertisefor the next round of recruitment at this event

Recruitment of new volunteers will be over JuneJuly with training commencingearly August

Over the last few months there has been a change in staff in the CommunityFoodie Coordinator based in Pt Augusta Hayley Blazseka has done a great jobworking with the Foodies in Pt Augusta and Whyalla and has now moved ontoother opportunities in Adelaide Andrea Nes who is a community nutritionist and

food scientist has now filled the position and is looking forward to continuing thegreat work that Hayley has achieved Due to the change in staff there has beena three months gap which has resulted in not a lot of activity in the Foodieprogram in Pt Pirie Pt Augusta or Whyalla up until April this year At thebeginning of May two Foodies Dionne and Joanne have delivered a session toa group of 20 participants in the local social interactive internet cafe on healthyeating on a budget It was a great session with lots of positive feedback belowis a photo of the session

Upcoming News

In Port Pirie in August there is going to be a seven week training program torecruit new Foodies This will be the first training session in Pt Pirie and willgive the community the opportunity to experience Foodie sessions In Pt Augusta there is going to be a six week Community Foodie sessions heldin the local Kindy on the four key messages as well as cooking on a budgetand planning healthy lunchboxes for kids There is also going to be 6 weeksessions delivered in the local drug and rehabitation centre and a healthyeating session the Davenports womenrsquos group In Whyalla there are currently three Foodies who are very passionate aboutdelivering Foodie Sessions in their local community centres in the upcomingweeks

Metro Currently we have nine enthusiastic new Foodies being trained at HackhamWest Childrenrsquos Centre (Yellow Unit) With the help of Milan the CommunityDevelopment Officer this has been a very interactive and interesting site forFoodies training with our new volunteers having opportunities to interact withpotential stakeholders and program participants as well as spend time in theonshysite garden and with the cows and chickens that live on the groundsThirteen Western Central Eastern and Northern Foodies have also graduatedas Red Foodies after completing the twoshyday FoodREDi training with Lisa Clarkfrom the Australian Red Cross Well done to all our new vollies

A snapshot of the wonderful work Foodies are doing Jane Chris Velika Eshrat and Prue have all had roles encouraging andsupporting disadvantaged Glenelg residents to improve their cooking skills andconfidence at St Andrews by the Sea church on Jetty Road With the support ofReverend Adam they have run three programs each four weeks long andseen fantastic enthusiasm and new skills from their participants Well doneMarion Foodies

Angela and Sharon have commenced an eight week education and cooking

program with disengaged youth at Seaford Community Centre They arecovering topics such as label reading and sugar in drinks while cooking up astorm including healthy pita pizzas and cold rolls

Christine and Lawrence have started a four week program to celebrate youngcarers (aged 12shy17) of people with a mental illness or disability The programwhich is at Salisbury Twenty 12 Youth Centre started with a bang last weekwith a focus on lsquodrink more waterrsquo The carers made popcorn fruit medley as ahealthy afterschool snack before testing their culinary skills in the kitchenmaking chicken and vegie stir fry Yum

food scientist has now filled the position and is looking forward to continuing thegreat work that Hayley has achieved Due to the change in staff there has beena three months gap which has resulted in not a lot of activity in the Foodieprogram in Pt Pirie Pt Augusta or Whyalla up until April this year At thebeginning of May two Foodies Dionne and Joanne have delivered a session toa group of 20 participants in the local social interactive internet cafe on healthyeating on a budget It was a great session with lots of positive feedback belowis a photo of the session

Upcoming News

In Port Pirie in August there is going to be a seven week training program torecruit new Foodies This will be the first training session in Pt Pirie and willgive the community the opportunity to experience Foodie sessions In Pt Augusta there is going to be a six week Community Foodie sessions heldin the local Kindy on the four key messages as well as cooking on a budgetand planning healthy lunchboxes for kids There is also going to be 6 weeksessions delivered in the local drug and rehabitation centre and a healthyeating session the Davenports womenrsquos group In Whyalla there are currently three Foodies who are very passionate aboutdelivering Foodie Sessions in their local community centres in the upcomingweeks

Metro Currently we have nine enthusiastic new Foodies being trained at HackhamWest Childrenrsquos Centre (Yellow Unit) With the help of Milan the CommunityDevelopment Officer this has been a very interactive and interesting site forFoodies training with our new volunteers having opportunities to interact withpotential stakeholders and program participants as well as spend time in theonshysite garden and with the cows and chickens that live on the groundsThirteen Western Central Eastern and Northern Foodies have also graduatedas Red Foodies after completing the twoshyday FoodREDi training with Lisa Clarkfrom the Australian Red Cross Well done to all our new vollies

A snapshot of the wonderful work Foodies are doing Jane Chris Velika Eshrat and Prue have all had roles encouraging andsupporting disadvantaged Glenelg residents to improve their cooking skills andconfidence at St Andrews by the Sea church on Jetty Road With the support ofReverend Adam they have run three programs each four weeks long andseen fantastic enthusiasm and new skills from their participants Well doneMarion Foodies

Christine and Lawrence have started a four week program to celebrate youngcarers (aged 12shy17) of people with a mental illness or disability The programwhich is at Salisbury Twenty 12 Youth Centre started with a bang last weekwith a focus on lsquodrink more waterrsquo The carers made popcorn fruit medley as ahealthy afterschool snack before testing their culinary skills in the kitchenmaking chicken and vegie stir fry Yum

Foodie TrainingSince our last newsletter back in 2015 new foodies have trained in Mannum(Murraylands Foodies) and Parafield Gardens (Foodies joined Western and Northerngroup) As this newsletter goes out training has just wrapped up in Mt Barker forHillsFleurieu foodies and training has just begun in Roxby Downs and southern metro We welcome all our new foodies to the program

Updates from Students shy Foodies Evaluation As part of my project with Community Foodies I was able to present some workshops tothe Marion and Onkaparinga Foodies groups Hopefully the groups found these were agood refresh tool for running the Sugar in Drinks and Label Reading activities to groupsBoth Foodie groups were very involved during the presentations and Irsquod love to mentiona special thank you to Cathy and Sharon who gave me a lot of ideas and feedback aboutthese I hope everyone in the groups went home with some new information

The workshops have now been made into two short video clips for Foodies to watchbefore they go and present these activities to groups within the community They will bein the Exchange very soon for you to view them In the future wersquore hoping that more willbe created and the presentations happen at each sitersquos catch ups

As a part of my project whilst on placement with Community Foodies I was lucky enoughto film four short interviews with some lovely Western and Northern Foodies to talk abouttheir experience as a Foodie I would like to thank all of the Foodies who were willing toshare their stories with meshy it was a pleasure to hear all of the fantastic things you haveachieved as a Foodie I would also like to thank the Foodies who gave me helpfulfeedback to assist in changing the general structure of the interviews to ensure it met theneeds and wants of the Foodies

These interviews will now be edited into a short video to create a promotional resourcecalled Foodie Stories The Foodie Stories will be used to promote the CommunityFoodies program in the community and orientate new Foodies to the program duringtheir training When finalised the Foodie Stories will be made available for all theFoodies and updates will be provided as this exciting project progresses

New OpportunitiesCommunity Foodies and Red Cross are working in partnership to meet theneeds of the community in regards to healthy eating programs To pilot thisfoodies across some areas of the metro region have been invited to be trainedin the Red Cross program FoodREDi This is a 6 week program that coversfood safety food budgeting smart shopping healthy eating and cooking Thefirst FoodREDi program to be delivered by foodies will be happening in June Stay tuned for further information and opportunities for foodies to be involved

New Resources There are now a number of standardised programs that are available forfoodies to access to use in community sessions and programs The hope isthat these can be used to cut down on your planning time and so you do notneed to develop programs from scratch There are session outlinespowerpoint slides (these can also be printed out) and a range of handouts foreach topic You can use them as a complete package or take ideas or sectionsfrom them depending on the target group you are working with and the programyou are doing You can access the resources on the exchange

Country South The Foodies program has continued to be very active in Mt Gambier with twoFoodies running ongoing programs Bronnie continues to work at the JunctionCentre with community members who have experienced mental health issuesVickie and Helen collaborate at the Mt Gambier Community Centre where theyrun a Budget Cooking program on a weekly basis for people with disabilities Jen Vonnie and Helen have been delivering programs for vulnerable youthtogether with Carers SA and the District Council of Grant These have beenenthusiastically received by young people and we look forward to doing furtherwork with these groups

In Murray Bridge Jennifer and Desi completed a Menrsquos cooking program atthe Murraylands Mens Shed before Christmas and we have been asked towork with the Aboriginal Sobriety Group to work with men to deliver a cookingprogram in Murray Bridge We hope to be able to deliver this program soonJennifer has acted as a mentor with a cook at the Murray Bridge CommunityCentre to assist with planning healthy affordable meals as part of their Monday

lunch program This program will utilise produce from the Community Garden tosupport the message of ldquoGrow Harvest Eatrdquo Leisa continues toenthusiastically promote healthy eating to children and parents in Mannum JoshyAnne has been working with OPAL at the Murray Bridge High School to supportbasic cooking skills amongst youth and also had more than 200 people drinkingfruit and herb flavoured water via lsquoWater tastingrdquo activity at the recent KiteFestival

Finally the HillsFleurieu group has also been delivering Mens Cookingprograms at Yankalilla and Linda has also used her professional fishmongeringskills to teach fishermen how to fillet fish Sandy and Colleen explored usingpulses with another Mens cooking group from the Hut at Aldgate and Sandrahas also supported a cooking group in her retirement village and delivered aHealthy Lunchbox session at Goolwa with a group from CLASS

Another new group of Foodies will complete training in May at Mt Barker Thisgroup of eleven new Foodies includes two Foodies from Murray Bridge twofrom the Fleurieu and seven from the Hills Several of these Foodies programare being supported by the Hut Disability SA and accare to deliver healthyeating programs as volunteers or within their paid positions showing the valuethat is placed upon nutrition knowledge and skills by our partners

In Port Pirie in August there is going to be a seven week training program torecruit new Foodies This will be the first training session in Pt Pirie and willgive the community the opportunity to experience Foodie sessions In Pt Augusta there is going to be a six week Community Foodie sessions heldin the local Kindy on the four key messages as well as cooking on a budgetand planning healthy lunchboxes for kids There is also going to be 6 weeksessions delivered in the local drug and rehabitation centre and a healthyeating session the Davenports womenrsquos group In Whyalla there are currently three Foodies who are very passionate aboutdelivering Foodie Sessions in their local community centres in the upcomingweeks

Metro Currently we have nine enthusiastic new Foodies being trained at HackhamWest Childrenrsquos Centre (Yellow Unit) With the help of Milan the CommunityDevelopment Officer this has been a very interactive and interesting site forFoodies training with our new volunteers having opportunities to interact withpotential stakeholders and program participants as well as spend time in theonshysite garden and with the cows and chickens that live on the groundsThirteen Western Central Eastern and Northern Foodies have also graduatedas Red Foodies after completing the twoshyday FoodREDi training with Lisa Clarkfrom the Australian Red Cross Well done to all our new vollies

A snapshot of the wonderful work Foodies are doing Jane Chris Velika Eshrat and Prue have all had roles encouraging andsupporting disadvantaged Glenelg residents to improve their cooking skills andconfidence at St Andrews by the Sea church on Jetty Road With the support ofReverend Adam they have run three programs each four weeks long andseen fantastic enthusiasm and new skills from their participants Well doneMarion Foodies

Christine and Lawrence have started a four week program to celebrate youngcarers (aged 12shy17) of people with a mental illness or disability The programwhich is at Salisbury Twenty 12 Youth Centre started with a bang last weekwith a focus on lsquodrink more waterrsquo The carers made popcorn fruit medley as ahealthy afterschool snack before testing their culinary skills in the kitchenmaking chicken and vegie stir fry Yum

As a part of my project whilst on placement with Community Foodies I was lucky enoughto film four short interviews with some lovely Western and Northern Foodies to talk abouttheir experience as a Foodie I would like to thank all of the Foodies who were willing toshare their stories with meshy it was a pleasure to hear all of the fantastic things you haveachieved as a Foodie I would also like to thank the Foodies who gave me helpfulfeedback to assist in changing the general structure of the interviews to ensure it met theneeds and wants of the Foodies

These interviews will now be edited into a short video to create a promotional resourcecalled Foodie Stories The Foodie Stories will be used to promote the CommunityFoodies program in the community and orientate new Foodies to the program duringtheir training When finalised the Foodie Stories will be made available for all theFoodies and updates will be provided as this exciting project progresses

New OpportunitiesCommunity Foodies and Red Cross are working in partnership to meet theneeds of the community in regards to healthy eating programs To pilot thisfoodies across some areas of the metro region have been invited to be trainedin the Red Cross program FoodREDi This is a 6 week program that coversfood safety food budgeting smart shopping healthy eating and cooking Thefirst FoodREDi program to be delivered by foodies will be happening in June Stay tuned for further information and opportunities for foodies to be involved

New Resources There are now a number of standardised programs that are available forfoodies to access to use in community sessions and programs The hope isthat these can be used to cut down on your planning time and so you do notneed to develop programs from scratch There are session outlinespowerpoint slides (these can also be printed out) and a range of handouts foreach topic You can use them as a complete package or take ideas or sectionsfrom them depending on the target group you are working with and the programyou are doing You can access the resources on the exchange

Finally the HillsFleurieu group has also been delivering Mens Cookingprograms at Yankalilla and Linda has also used her professional fishmongeringskills to teach fishermen how to fillet fish Sandy and Colleen explored usingpulses with another Mens cooking group from the Hut at Aldgate and Sandrahas also supported a cooking group in her retirement village and delivered aHealthy Lunchbox session at Goolwa with a group from CLASS

Another new group of Foodies will complete training in May at Mt Barker Thisgroup of eleven new Foodies includes two Foodies from Murray Bridge twofrom the Fleurieu and seven from the Hills Several of these Foodies programare being supported by the Hut Disability SA and accare to deliver healthyeating programs as volunteers or within their paid positions showing the valuethat is placed upon nutrition knowledge and skills by our partners

Finally the HillsFleurieu group has also been delivering Mens Cookingprograms at Yankalilla and Linda has also used her professional fishmongeringskills to teach fishermen how to fillet fish Sandy and Colleen explored usingpulses with another Mens cooking group from the Hut at Aldgate and Sandrahas also supported a cooking group in her retirement village and delivered aHealthy Lunchbox session at Goolwa with a group from CLASS

Another new group of Foodies will complete training in May at Mt Barker Thisgroup of eleven new Foodies includes two Foodies from Murray Bridge twofrom the Fleurieu and seven from the Hills Several of these Foodies programare being supported by the Hut Disability SA and accare to deliver healthyeating programs as volunteers or within their paid positions showing the valuethat is placed upon nutrition knowledge and skills by our partners

In Port Pirie in August there is going to be a seven week training program torecruit new Foodies This will be the first training session in Pt Pirie and willgive the community the opportunity to experience Foodie sessions In Pt Augusta there is going to be a six week Community Foodie sessions heldin the local Kindy on the four key messages as well as cooking on a budgetand planning healthy lunchboxes for kids There is also going to be 6 weeksessions delivered in the local drug and rehabitation centre and a healthyeating session the Davenports womenrsquos group In Whyalla there are currently three Foodies who are very passionate aboutdelivering Foodie Sessions in their local community centres in the upcomingweeks
