THIS WEEK’S GAME

The Cardinals open the 2006 regular season this week with a home game against their NFC West foe San Francisco 49ers.

This week’s game marks the first time since moving to the Valley in 1988 that the Cardinals have opened with a week one home game. Since 1970, the Cardinals regular season opener has been on the road 27 of 35 times.

The Cards enter the 2006 regular season after going 2-2 in the preseason. The Cards dropped their preseason finale 29-23 to the Denver Broncos. The 49ers also ended the preseason at 2-2 after a 23-14 preseason finale win over the San Diego Chargers.

At halftime of this week’s game the Cardinals will induct Hall of Fame safety Larry Wilson in the team’s Ring of Honor. Wilson spent 43 years with the team, both as a player and executive.

The Cardinals and 49ers will meet again on December 24th in

San Francisco.

The Cardinals open the regular season on Monday Night Football for the first time in franchise history when they travel to San Francisco to face the 49ers. The Cardinals-49ers game is the second part of a MNF double-header for ESPN, which is airing Baltimore at Cincinnati at 4:00 PM (MST) Arizona will be appearing on MNF for the 18

th time in team

history. The Cardinals last appeared on MNF last year when they hosted the Chicago Bears on October 16, suffering a 24-23 defeat. The Cardinals first appearance on MNF was on November 16, 1970 when they traveled to Dallas and defeated the Cowboys 38-0.

The Cardinals face the 49ers in the opener for the second consecutive year. In 2006, the 49ers visited Arizona for the first regular season game played at University of Phoenix Stadium, with the Cardinals winning 34-27.

BOLDIN STARS ON MONDAY NIGHT

Cardinals Pro Bowl wide receiver Anquan Boldin made a big splash in his Monday Night debut in 2006. When the Chicago Bears paid a visit to the Cards at University of Phoenix Stadium on October 16, the fifth-year pro helped make up for the absence of fellow Pro Bowl receiver Larry Fitzgerald by hauling in a career-high 12 receptions for a game-high 136 yards and a TD in a 24-23 loss to the eventual NFC Champions. Boldin’s only other appearance in a primetime game was the 2005 Sunday night contest against the 49ers that took place in Mexico City in front of an NFL record 103,467 fans. That game marked the first time that Boldin and Fitzgerald would both go over 100 yards receiving in the same game (Boldin 8-116 yds, TD; Fitzgerald 7-102 yds, TD). They have now accomplished that feat five times.

CARDINALS APPEAR IN FIRST MONDAY NIGHT SEASON OPENER

The Cardinals have been on MNF 17 times since 1970 and have a 5-11-1 record in those games. Since moving to the Valley, the Cards have only played on Monday night only three times. In 2005, five teams appeared on MNF three times: Philadelphia, Indianapolis, Green Bay, Pittsburgh and Atlanta.

The 49ers have now been the Cardinals opponent in two of their last three primetime games. Before hosting Chicago on MNF on October 16

MONDAY NIGHT MEMORIES

It is not just players who get excited to play on Monday Night Football. Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt will be making his head coaching debut on MNF and recently shared his memories of watching Monday Night Football growing up. “When I was a kid I remembered watching Monday night games,” said Whisenhunt. “Being on the east coast, the games didn’t end until after midnight so I could only watch the first half.” “But I always remember hoping it could get to that last situation right before the half where they throw the ball deep, throw the long bomb. That’s what I was always excited for. I was excited for the big play, because it seemed like there was so much more excitement about it.” “I have played in a number of Monday night games and coached in a number of Monday night games and the atmosphere is as close to a playoff-type atmosphere as you can get.” FIRST TIME IN THE SPOTLIGHT

A Monday Night Football appearance is always special for NFL players. The chance to play in primetime in front of a national audience is a big opportunity.

EDGE COLLECTING YARDS ON MNF

Since entering the league in 1999, Edgerrin James has played in eight Monday Night Football games and totaled 811 yards. In that span, only one other player, Ahman Green, has totaled more yards and Green has played in six more games than James.

CARDINALS & 49ERS IN 2006 te IN 2005 REGULAR SEASON

THE SERIES The Cardinals and 49ers have met 31 times dating back to 1951 with the 49ers holding a 17-14 lead in the series. Since the Cardinals joined the NFC West division prior to the 2002 season, the teams have met twice annually with the Cardinals riding a four game winning streak to tie the divisional series 5-5. The Cardinals swept the 2005 and 2006 series, which included the first NFL regular season game played outside of the United States on Oct. 2, 2005 in Mexico City. That year also marked the first time the Cardinals won in San Francisco since 1978 and their first sweep of a divisional opponent since joining the NFC West.

This matchup marks the second time these two teams have played each other on MNF, with the 49ers visiting Arizona in 1998 and leaving with a 24-10 victory.

TWO DEEP AT QB The Cardinals currently have just two quarterbacks on their 53-man roster – starter Matt Leinart and back-up Kurt Warner – and the move seems part of a growing trend in the league. A look at NFL rosters after the final cuts shows that 14 of the 32 teams decided to go with just two quarterbacks in 2007. A year ago it was nine teams and in 2005 it was just four. One of the reasons would seem to be that the third QB is so infrequently used. Of the 256 regular season games played in 2006, a team used its third QB in a game just four times and each time it was a coaching decision and not because the first two QBs were knocked out of the game. Since 2001, three QBs attempted a pass for a team in only 19 of 1,528 games (1.2%). THIRD QB’S IN 2006: The Patriots used Tom Brady, Matt Cassel and Vinny Testaverde in blowout wins at Green Bay (35-0 on

11/19) and vs. Houston (40-7 on 12/17) as well as in a season-ending victory at Tennessee (40-23 on 12/31). The only other team to field three QBs in a game was Minnesota who replaced starter Brad Johnson with back-up Brooks Bollinger in a 23-13 loss to the Bears on 12/3 and then turned to #3 QB Tarvaris Jackson when Bollinger exited with an injury. CARDS AND THIRD QB’S: The last time the Cards were forced to use their third QB was in at Houston on 12/18/05. Starting QB

Kurt Warner suffered a knee injury and had to leave the game early in the second quarter. Back-up Josh McCown, who was suffering from flu-like symptoms finished the half but was unable to play in the second leading #3 John Navarre to play the rest of the game. It was a rare occurrence. In the last 20 seasons, the Cardinals used three QBs in a game on just three other occasions: 9/6/92 vs. Tampa (Rosenbach, Chandler, Sacca); 11/19/89 at LA Rams (Hogeboom, Tupa, Rosenbach); and 12/4/88 at NY Giants (Lomax, Stoudt and Tupa). IF THIS HAD BEEN AN ACTUAL EMERGENCY: If the Cardinals do need a third QB, he will already be in the offensive huddle.

Anquan Boldin, a two-time Pro Bowler at receiver, would be the emergency choice. A star QB at Pahokee (FL) High School, Boldin saw occasional QB duty at Florida State. His last action at the position was in his final college game when injuries and suspensions led the Seminoles to play Boldin at QB in the Sugar Bowl vs. Georgia. THIRD QB RULE: In 1991, the NFL instituted the third-quarterback rule, enabling teams to have an emergency QB in addition to

the regular 45-man game day roster. Many teams at that time carried only two QBs on the roster for strategic purposes. Still in effect, the third-quarterback rule states that if the designated third QB enters the game before the start of the fourth quarter (at any position and for any reason), the team’s first two QBs cannot re-enter the game at any position. The designated third QB can enter in the fourth quarter or overtime without affecting the status of the other two.

The Cardinals ended San Fran’s playoff hopes and improved to 5-10 with a 26-20 win at Monster Park. The victory gave Arizona a season sweep of the 49ers and the Cards upped their divisional record to 4-2, tops in the NFC West. Rookie QB Matt Leinart led the Arizona offense to scores on its first four possessions of the game-the first time the Cards did that since 11/7/93 – but exited with a shoulder injury late in the first half and Kurt Warner guided the Cards the rest of the way. Arizona’s defense sacked Alex Smith four times, limited RB Frank Gore to just 51 yards on 11 carries, and had two key takeaways in the fourth quarter. Edgerrin James topped 100 rushing yards for the third time in four games and became the first Arizona back to reach 1,000 yards in a season since 1998 (Adrian Murrell). San Francisco’s Joe Nedney hit a 49-yard FG on the game’s first drive but Arizona came right back. On the first offensive play, Leinart and WR Larry Fitzgerald connected on a 57-yard pass that led to a 25-yard Neil Rackers FG. AZ went up 10-3 on the next drive thanks to a 5-yard Marcel Shipp TD run and extended the lead to 14 when Leinart hit Fitzgerald with a 6-yard TD pass. A 39-yard Rackers FG on Arizona’s fourth drive of the game made it 20-3 with 1:57 left in the first half but on the play before, Leinart injured his shoulder on a sack by San Fran LB Roderick Green. A 32-yard Nedney FG with :22 left made it 20-6 at the half. The Niners caught a break early in the third when Troy Walters fumbled on a punt return, turning it over at the AZ 46. Six plays later, Gore scored from two yards out to make it 20-13. Warner then led a 12-play drive that chewed up 6:28 and ended with a 37-yard Rackers FG on the first play of the fourth. Down 10, San Fran’s Maurice Hicks returned the ensuing kickoff 64 yards to the AZ 34 but on the next play, Smith’s pass went off the hands of Gore and was INT’d by CB Antrel Rolle to kill the threat. After a Cardinals punt, the Niners again turned it over on their first offensive play when Rolle forced WR Arnaz Battle to fumble and FS Robert Griffith recovered at the SF 18. That led to Rackers’ third FG of the day, a 32-yarder that made it 26-13 with 8:28 to play. With 5:00 left, Gore scored on a 1-yard run to make it 26-20. The Cards got the ball back and were able to salt the game by picking up three first downs, the last of which came on a 5-yard Shipp run on 3rd-n-4 just before the 2:00 warning.

The Cardinals played their first week one home game since moving to the Valley and made their regular-season debut in front of a sell-out crowd at their brand-new, state-of-the-art stadium. The team marked the occasion with 7-point win over the visiting 49ers that saw Arizona jump out to an early lead and then withstand a furious last-minute comeback attempt by San Fran. QB Kurt Warner upped his mark as a starter vs. the Niners to 7-0 with a 3-TD, 301-yard performance while RB Edgerrin James rushed 26 times for 73 yards and a TD in his regular season debut for he Cards. WR Larry Fitzgerald led the way at 9-133 receiving. After 49ers rookie TE Vernon Davis capped the game-opening drive with a 31-yard TD catch from Alex Smith, Arizona answered with a 74-yard drive that ended on a 2-yard Warner pass to WR Troy Walters. On the ensuing drive, LB Orlando Huff forced a Frank Gore fumble that Gerald Hayes scooped up and returned to the SF 5. Three plays later, James dove in from a yard away to make it 14-7. San Fran’s next drive ended when Davis fumbled and DT Darnell Dockett recovered at the SF 41. That led to a 6-yard Warner-to-Anquan Boldin TD pass late in the opening quarter. The Cardinals, who went all of 2005 without a first quarter TD, suddenly had scored three. The team hadn’t scored on its first three possessions of a game since 1993 and hadn’t notched three first quarter scores since 1975. Early in the second, Gore scored on a 4-yard run that made it 21-14 but a 36-yard Neil Rackers FG extended the lead to 24-14 at the half. Midway through the third, San Fran CB Walt Harris made a pivotal play when he sacked Warner, forcing a fumble that he recovered at the AZ 7. Two plays later, Gore plowed it in from 2 yards out to make it a 3-point game. The Cards answered though with a long drive (10 plays, 86 yards) that ended when Warner hit TE Adam Bergen with a 7-yard TD pass. Early in the 4

missed a 34-yard FG that would have made it 31-24 but came back on the next drive to hit a 22-yarder that was set up by a 60-yard Arnaz Battle punt return and trimmed the AZ lead to 7 with 8:52 to play. From there the Cards embarked upon a 13-play, 68-yard drive that chewed up 7:02 and ended with a 30-yard Rackers FG that made it a two-score game. Out of time outs and down 10, a 46-yard pass from Smith to Antonio Bryant put the Niners at the AZ 26 with :34 left and Nedney kicked a 44-yarder on first down to give them a chance. The chances increased when SF recovered the on-side kick but two long passes into the end zone from the AZ 36 fell incomplete to preserve the win that placed Arizona at 1-0 for the first time since 1999.

FIRST YEAR IN THE NEST

For the Cardinals, 2007 doesn’t just bring with it the promise of a new season, it also ushers in the Ken Whisenhunt era in the

desert.

On January 14, the Cardinals named Whisenhunt their new head coach. He comes to Arizona after spending the previous six years with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Prior to joining the Steelers, Whisenhunt coached tight ends with the NY Jets (2000), special teams with the Cleveland Browns (1999) and tight ends with the Baltimore Ravens (1997-98).

Having served as the Steelers tight ends coach from 2001-2003, Whisenhunt was then promoted to offensive coordinator where over the next three years he not only helped lead the Steelers to a victory in Super Bowl XL but also gained a reputation as one of the most innovative play-callers in the NFL.

In his tenure as offensive coordinator, Whisenhunt:

Improved the Steelers running game from 31st overall

to second overall in his first year as coordinator.

Helped lead the team to a victory in Super Bowl XL.

Averaged 2,226 yards and 18 TDs a season on the ground.

coaches entering the 2007 season looking to repeat the success of last year’s rookie coaches Sean Payton (Saints) and Eric Mangini (Jets). Payton and Mangini were the only two first-year head coaches that finished 2006 with a winning record and a playoff appearance.

PENDERGAST STILL THE MAN FOR CARDS DEFENSE

Despite hiring new head coach Ken Whisenhunt and almost entirely remaking the Cardinals coaching staff, defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast still holds the reigns of the Cardinals defense. Pendergast, who was one of two assistants retained by Whisenhunt (assistant defensive backs coach Rick Courtright was the other) enters his fourth season with the Cardinals. A native of Phoenix, Pengergast improved the defense’s overall ranking from 26

th to 12

th overall in his first year as

coordinator. In 2005, the defense ranked 8th

overall, the first top ten ranking for a Cardinals defense since 1994 when they ranked third overall. The Cardinals 2006 defense forced 33 turnovers (17 fumble recoveries and 16 interceptions) which was good for fifth most in the NFL. In the three years under Pendergast, the defense forced 89 turnovers, which ranks 10

th in the NFL

over that span. An innovative defensive mind, Pendergast has helped players such as Bertrand Berry and Adrian Wilson to Pro Bowl appearances. Wilson, used all over the field in Pendergast’s schemes, has become one of the most feared defenders in the NFL.

Between 2004 and 2006, the Steelers offense averaged 545 rushing attempts, 2,226 yards for a 4.1 yard average and almost 18 TD’s.

Of the 3,013 total offensive plays run by the Steelers between 2004 and 2006, 1,636 of them, or 54.3%, were rushing plays.

Between that same time period, the Cardinals ran a total of 3,121 plays, with 1,254 of them, or 40.2%, as rushing plays.

“When you talk about running the football, for me, it’s more about a mentality,” Whisenhunt said. “We don’t want to lose sight of the fact that we want to run the football.”

In total, the Cardinals new coaching staff has a combined 110 years of coaching experience at the NFL level, 115 years of coaching experience at the college level and 50 years of experience playing at the NFL level.

A LOTT OF IMPROVEMENT One of Ken Whisenhunt’s most talked about hires has been strength and conditioning coach John Lott. It didn’t take long for the Texas native and 10-year NFL veteran to make an impact on the organization. Over a six week period this offseason, Lott oversaw the complete renovation of the Cardinals weight room at the Tempe training facility. Under Lott, the team’s training philosophy gears more towards free weights (bench press, squats, medicine ball and power cleans) as well as dynamic movements on the field. The new workout is focused not only on improving the player’s strength but their flexibility and overall athleticism as well. A quick look around the locker room will answer any questions as to whether the offseason program has been a success. The amount of weight that players on both sides of the ball have lost is staggering. HALEY FOLLOWING LINEAGE

Todd Haley may be in his first year as offensive coordinator for the Cardinals but he is not new to the NFL. In his 11

th

NFL season, he comes from the Dallas where he was the Cowboys passing game coordinator in 2006.

However, Haley’s introduction to the NFL came a lot earlier than 11 years ago. The son of Dick Haley, the former Director of Player Personnel for the Pittsburgh Steelers (1971-90) and New York Jets (1991-2002), Todd has been around the NFL his entire life.

Long before he became a coach, Haley was a ballboy for the Super Bowl Championship Steelers teams of the 1970s.

He got his first NFL coaching job in 1997 with the New York Jets under head coach Bill Parcells. He then went on to coach receivers in Chicago (2001-03) and Dallas (2004-06) before coming to Arizona.

Over Haley’s first 10 seasons as an assistant coach in the NFL, he has helped tutor players to Pro Bowls during six of those campaigns: WR Keyshawn Johnson (Jets 1998, 99, 00), WR Marty Booker (Bears 2003), TE Jason Witten (Cowboys 2005, 2006) and QB Tony Romo (Cowboys 2006).

GRIMM TAKES OVER THE LINE

One of the first areas new head coach Ken Whisenhunt wanted to address when he took over in Arizona was the offensive line. The first thing he had to do was find a new offensive line coach and when your top candidate has a resume that reads:

Russ Grimm took over the assistant head coach/offensive line position on Januray 23 and has wasted no time pushing his philosophies of toughness and discipline and finding the personnel to fit that philosophy. With Grimm’s input, the Cardinals went out and signed free agent linemen Al Johnson and Mike Gandy and drafted tackle Levi Brown with the fifth overall pick in the 2007 NFL Draft, which makes for a good start to the Grimm tenure.

STRENGTHENING THE CORE

One of the things Cardinals General Manager Rod Graves has placed an emphasis on in recent years has been identifying the talented young players that comprise the team’s core contributors and then locking them up contractually.

Below is a listing of some of the core players that the Cardinals have been able to re-sign and in most cases extend with time remaining on their existing contract. Anquan Boldin-A two-time Pro Bowler who reached 300

receptions faster than any receiver in NFL history. He signed a four-year contract extension in July of 2005. Darnell Dockett-Has started 47 or 48 games in his first three

seasons while displaying impressive big-play ability. He signed a five-year contract extension in October of 2006. Aaron Francisco-Has played in 27 games his first two years

and was named a Pro Bowl alternate for his special teams prowess in 2006. Signed a four-year contract extension in December of 2006. Gerald Hayes-Coming off his first season as a full-time

starter at linebacker and led the team with 111 tackles despite missing two games. Signed a five-year contract extension in November of 2006. Neil Rackers-Set the NFL record for field goals in a season in

2005 when he connected on 40. Signed a four-year extension in November of 2005. Reggie Wells-Has started the last 42 games in which he

appeared in with the Cardinals. Cardinals matched an offer sheet from the Buffalo Bills which resulted in a five-year deal that he signed in March of 2006. Adrian Wilson-Has become the unquestioned leader of the

Cardinals defense while earning his first Pro Bowl nod in 2006. Signed a five-year extension in December of 2004.

FREE AGENT SIGNINGS The Cardinals new coaching staff went into free agency in the offseason with the intent on picking up numerous players who could compete for starting positions and help increase the depth on the team.

Holt, was a college teammate and roommate of Cardinals Pro Bowl safety Adrian Wilson at North Carolina State. Started 27 of the 53 games he appeared in at Detroit (2003-06).

Roderick Hood- Appeared in 56 regular season games with

the Eagles between 2003-06 and also played in seven postseason games with three starts. In 2005, was selected to USA Today’s “All-Joe” team which recognizes players whose contributions are valuable but seldom heralded.

Al Johnson-Was the Cardinals first free agent signing of

2007 after agreeing to a four-year contract on 3/5/07. Originally a second round pick (38

th overall) in the 2003 NFL

Draft by Dallas, started 31 consecutive games for the Cowboys between 2004-2005.

Sean Morey-A special teams standout throughout his career,

he was named the Steelers’ Special Teams Co-Captain in 2005 and 2006, leading Pittsburgh in special teams tackles in each of his three years with the Steelers (2004-06) and was named a Pro Bowl alternate in 2005.

Terrelle Smith-Has blocked for a 1,000-yard rusher five

PRESEASON HIGHLIGHTS

Cards get running- The Cardinals rushed for 492 yards in

the preseason, averaging 123 yards per game. Eight Cardinal backs averaged at least four yards per carry.

Boldin back at it- Boldin led the Cardinals in receiving with

171 yards on nine catches, good for fifth in the NFC. Among the top 20 receivers in the NFC, only two averaged better than Boldin’s 19.0 yards per catch.

Cooper sits atop the NFL- Cardinals sixth year defensive

tackle Chris Cooper tied for the NFL lead (LeKevin Smith, NE) with four sacks.

Rack ‘em once more- Rackers placed himself back among

the elite kickers in the game, going seven-for-eight in field goal attempts with two FGs over 50, including a NFL long 59-yarder at Oakland.

Ratings bonanza- Cardinals quarterbacks Matt Leinart and

Kurt Warner finished with quarterback ratings of 103.0 and 134.4 respectively. They combined to go 40-of-60 for 574 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. Neither quarterback was sacked in the preseason.

NOT JUST THE HEAD COACH NFL head coaches come from a variety of backgrounds. Some are defensive specialists while some have experience rooted in the offensive side of the ball. Cardinals first-year head coach Ken Whisenhunt has been known around the league as one of the NFL’s most innovative play callers dating back to his days as offensive coordinator with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Whisenhunt will utilize those skills as an offensive specialist with the Cardinals, continuing to call the plays from the sidelines, opting to continue doing what only a handful of NFL head coaches do when taking over the leadership role. HIGHLIGHTS FROM 2006

From Indy to Arizona: On March 12, 2006, the Cardinals signed running back Edgerrin James to a four-year contract. Like that,

the Cardinals had one of the games most talented and accomplished backs.

With the 10th

pick in the 2006 NFL Draft: The Cardinals selected quarterback Matt Leinart with the 10th

overall selection in the

draft. The Heisman winner, two-time National Champion and owner of a 37-2 record as a starter at USC instantly became the face of the organization.

Cardinals open the doors to their new home: The Cardinals welcomed fans to University of Phoenix Stadium for the first time

during Week One of the preseason when they welcomed the defending Super Bowl Champion Pittsburgh Steelers on August 12. Every game was sold out before the season began as the Cardinals established a new franchise attendance record with 508,829 fans visiting during the regular season.

Cardinal greats remembered in Ring of Honor: In their new stadium, the Cardinals were able to honor numerous figures who

have made a profound impact on the organization. Eleven members of the organization were enshrined in the Cardinals Ring of Honor during the season: Fullback Ernie Nevers, former owner Charles W. Bidwill, Sr., quarterback Jimmy Conzelman, halfback Charley Trippi, quarterback John (Paddy) Driscoll, halfback Ollie Matson, cornerback Dick (Night Train) Lane, tackles Dan Dierdorf, halfback Marshall Goldberg, safety Pat Tillman and free safety Larry Wilson.

Tillman memorialized: Before the Cardinals November 12 contest against the Dallas Cowboys, the Cardinals unveiled a

memorial to former Cardinals safety Pat Tillman. The plaza surrounding the stadium is now known as Pat Tillman Freedom Plaza. The memorial includes a eight foot tall white bronze sculpture of Tillman that stands in front of a nine-football wall that measure 42 feet across, Tillman’s number at Arizona State. A 60-foot circular pool of tranquility and a grove of 40 Oak trees that symbolize Tillman’s jersey number with the Cardinals complete the memorial. Tillman was added to the Ring of Honor at halftime of the Dallas game.

300 and counting: Pro Bowl receiver Anquan Boldin reached 300 career receptions faster than any player in NFL history when

he reached the feat in Oakland on October 22. He hit the mark in only 47 games, seven faster than the previous record holder, former Denver receiver Lionel Taylor.

Leinart set rookie record: After taking over the Cardinals starting quarterback spot in week five, Leinart met ups and downs

during his 11 starts. One of the ups was Leinart’s performance against the Vikings on November 26 when he became the first rookie in NFL history to throw for over 400 yards in a game when he piled up 405 yards through the air in Minneosta. The previous record belonged to former Cardinals QB Jake Plummer who threw for 388 yards against the Giants on November 16, 1997.

Wilson earns first trip to Hawaii: The recognition was long overdue but strong safety Adrian Wilson was finally selected as a

Pro Bowl player. Wilson made himself known in 2006 by returning both a fumble and interception 99-yards for touchdowns while leading the Cardinals in interceptions (4), forced fumbles (4) and tackles for a loss (8).

ON THE ROAD – AGAIN The Cardinals will open regular season on the road for the 19

th

time in the 20 seasons since they moved to Arizona. The lone exception was in 2006 when the Cardinals played the first regular season game at University of Phoenix Stadium, hosting the San Francisco 49ers. Not only have the Cardinals had to battle the competitive disadvantage of starting almost every season on the road, in four seasons the first two games were away and in three other seasons the Cards started the first three games on the road. The Cardinals have not had consecutive opening weekend home games since 1986-87, 1987 being the team’s last year in St. Louis. The Cardinals will play two of their first three games on the road for the 15

th time since they moved to Arizona. Not including

2001, when the Cardinals started the season with a bye week and the following week’s game was postponed due to the September 11 tragedy, the only other years the Cardinals started two of three at home were 2003 and 2006.

FREQUENT FLYERS

The Cardinals will be earning their frequent flyer miles in 2007 as one of six NFL teams that will travel at least 25,000 miles, the equivalent to a trip around the world. The 25,780 miles the Cardinals are scheduled to travel are the sixth most in the NFL. The NFC West is the conference that will easily travel the most in the coming season, with the Cardinals ranking sixth in miles traveled, St. Louis ranking first (34,352 miles), Seattle second (33,586 miles) and San Francisco eighth (19,732 miles). Altogether, NFC West teams will travel a total of 113, 620 miles. NFL teams will travel a total distance of 566,650 miles in 2007, 75,000 miles more than a round trip flight from the earth to the moon. The N.Y. The Cardinals enter 2007 with a roster that has undergone significant change since last season. Under the guidance of head coach Ken Whisenhunt, there are now 14 new coaches (including Whisenhunt) and 22 players on the roster that were not with the organization in 2006.

SUPER BACKS The Cardinals have one of the NFL’s premier running backs in their backfield in Edgerrin James. James, the NFL’s active leading rusher, is a four-time Pro Bowler and has led the NFL is rushing three times in his career. As for the other top backs in the league, many of them will be lining up against the Cardinals in 2007. Arizona will face a Pro Bowl running back in 12 of its 16 games this year. Cardinals fullback Terrelle Smith won’t be on the top of

anyone’s fantasy draft but he has played a big part in the success of some of the backs that have been.

Smith, an eighth-year pro the Cardinals signed to a two-year deal in March, has been the lead blocker for a 1,000-yard rusher five times in his seven years in the league.

The Matt Leinart era in Arizona began earlier than expected in 2006. After taking over the starting role in week five against Kansas City, Leinart performed well in his first NFL action.

Leinart showed significant improvement as the year went on, improving his stats in nearly every category over the last six weeks of the season.

Leinart completed 22 of 35 passes (63%) for 253 yards in his first NFL start vs. Kansas City on 10/8/06. Rams, 1962), Dan Marino (Dolphins, 1983) and Brent Pease, a replacement player for the Houston Oilers during the 1987 players' strike. WARNER RETURNS Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner returns to for his 10

NFL season in 2007. One of the greatest success stories in NFL history, Warner will serve as the back-up to starter Matt Leinart. It is not a bad position to be in for the Cardinals. Especially when your backup QB enters the season having just posted a 134.4 passer rating in the preseason after completing 16-of-20 passes for 245 yards and a TD. Warner was never sacked nor intercepted in the preseason and continued to show why he is one of the most accurate QBs in league history by completing 80% of his passes.

BOLDIN STILL BREAKING RECORDS

In his first four seasons with the Cardinals, Anquan Boldin

has recorded 342 receptions, topping the 100-catch mark in two of those four seasons. Boldin was the fastest player to reach 200 receptions, reaching the milestone in November of 2005. In 2006, Boldin became the fastest receiver ever to 300 receptions. After 56 career games, Boldin’s 342 receptions top even the most elite receivers in NFL history. Names like Jerry Rice, Michael Irvin, Tim Brown and Marvin Harrison have numbers well below Boldin’s. In fact, Boldin’s 342 receptions through 56 games are 72 more than the next closest on that list, Marvin Harrison, who had 270. Boldin became the fastest to 300 receptions on October 22, 2006 in Oakland during his 47

SO YOUNG IT IS SCARY

Even though he just turned 24 (August 31), wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald has already had one impressive career. He

has a Pro Bowl appearance, 3,135 yards receiving on 230 receptions and nine career 100-yard games.

Entering his fourth season in the NFL, the scariest thing about Fitzgerald is that he is only going to get better as he gets older.

Fitzgerald is the youngest receiver on the team despite the fact that he has started in 45 games already. He established the franchise record for receptions in a season with 103 in 2005, only his second year in the NFL. In fact, at 22 years and 123 days, Fitzgerald became the youngest receiver in NFL history to record a 100-catch campaign when he reached the milestone at Indianapolis on 1/1/06.

In 2006, Fitzgerald missed the first action of his NFL career when he had to sit out weeks 6-8 with a hamstring injury. Despite the missed time, Fitzgerald fell only 54 yards short of his second consecutive 1,000-yard season.

In 2007, Fitzgerald can reach a few more milestones if he continues at his current pace. He can:

Between 2005 and 2006, they accomplished the feat five times and when they did it at Minnesota on Nov. 26, 2006, they became the first duo in team history to each record 140 or more yards in the same game.

Fitzgerald and Boldin have both gone for 100 or more yards in a game five times, four of those coming in their record setting 2005 campaign.

FRESH FROM HAWAII

Cardinals strong safety Adrian Wilson enters the 2007

season the way he feels he should have entered the last couple of seasons, fresh off a Pro Bowl appearance.

Wilson made it virtually impossible for voters to keep him away from Hawaii with his performance in 2006. The seventh year pro became the first player in NFL history with two touchdowns of 99+ yards in the same season after he returned both an interception and a fumble for touchdowns.

On October 1 at Atlanta, Wilson picked off a Michael Vick pass that turned what might have been a 16-3 second quarter lead into a 10-9 Cardinals lead when he ran it back 99 yards for the third touchdown of his career.

On November 26 at Minnesota he scooped up a Chester Taylor fumble in the fourth quarter and returned it for a touchdown as the Vikings tried to put away the game in the fourth quarter.

Along with becoming the only defender with two 99-yard touchdowns in the same season, Wilson became the only NFL player in history with multiple 99-yarders without the benefit of a kickoff return.

Wilson rounded out his Pro Bowl season by leading the team in interceptions (4), forced fumbles (4), fumble recoveries (2, tie), tackles for a loss (8), and was third in tackles (87) and fourth in sacks (5).

BERRY RETURNS

Cardinals defensive end/linebacker Bertrand Berry is no

stranger to adversity, or overcoming it. Originally drafted by the Colts as a linebacker, Berry moved to defensive end early in his career. Following his stint with the Colts, Berry signed with the St. Louis Rams but didn’t make it through training camp.

Berry then spent 2000 out of football. After a tryout with the Denver Broncos on New Years Day 2001, Berry signed with the Broncos where he spent three seasons before signing with the Cardinals in 2004.

After recording an NFC high 14.5 sacks and being named to his first career Pro Bowl in 2004, Berry was on pace for another trip to Hawaii in 2005, recording six sacks in the first eight games before suffering a pectoral muscle injury vs. Seattle (11/6/05) and was placed on injured reserve.

Berry headed into the 2006 season healthy and ready to chase down opposing quarterbacks. Berry was again back to form, collecting six sacks in the final five games he played before suffering a triceps injury vs. Detroit (11/19/106). For the second time in two years, one of the Cardinals unquestioned defensive leaders had to be placed on injured reserve.

Back at full health, Berry enters the 2007 ready to reclaim his spot as one of the league’s premier pass rushers.

JUST 100 MORE

Cardinals placekicker Neil Rackers is coming off back-to-

back 100+ point seasons, something accomplished just one other time in Cardinals history. Cardinals back Pat Harder was the first player in NFL history to have three consecutive 100-point seasons (1947-49). If Rackers can make it three years in a row with at least 100 points he will not only share the franchise record with Harder, but he will also move into second place on the Cardinals all-time points list. He needs exactly 100 points to move ahead of Greg Davis, who currently sits in second place with 484 career points. Cardinal great Jim Bakken holds the Cardinals career points record with 1,380. If the preseason is any indicator, Rackers should have no trouble reaching the 100-point milestone again in 2007, again showing the accuracy and leg strength that made him one of the elite kickers in the league in 2005.

2005 ALL OVER AGAIN? Cardinals placekicker Neil Rackers had a preseason that

brought back memories of his Pro Bowl season of 2005. It is all there: the long field goals, high field goal accuracy rate and touchbacks on kickoffs. Following the preseason and heading into the regular season opener, Rackers looks to have benefited from his offseason commitment. After feeling off in 2006, Rackers dropped 20 pounds and he enters 2007 leaner and stronger and the early results have reflected that. This has been evident since his first field goal attempt in the Cardinals opening preseason game at Oakland. On that kick, Rackers connected on a 59-yard attempt, the longest of his career and the longest in the NFL in the preseason. And he hasn’t slowed down since. Rackers established a Cardinals franchise record when he connected on his first 31 consecutive field goal attempts in 2005. In the 2007 preseason, Rackers went seven of eight on field goals, with two of those good from 50+ yards and his only miss being a 50-yarder in the preseason finale at Denver that missed just wide. His 29 points were second among NFC kickers. Rackers also led the NFL in touchbacks in 2005, despite not kicking off in the final five contests. It certainly looked like Rackers is poised to repeat that accomplishment. In just the four preseason games Rackers had nine touchbacks.

DAVIS RETURNS TO BAY AREA Cardinals linebackers coach Billy Davis, who was hired on by

new head coach Ken Whisenhunt on January 19, returns to San Francisco this week where he had spent the last two seasons as the 49ers’ defensive coordinator. In San Francisco, Davis’ tenure was highlighted by the Pro Bowl selection of CB Nate Harris, who tied for the NFC lead for interceptions with eight. Also, linebacker Brandon Moore enjoyed a breakout year under Davis’ tutelage, with a career high 114 tackles, including 6.5 sacks. Davis, in his 16

th year of coaching, joined the 49ers after

coaching linebackers for the previous four years with the Falcons (2001-03) and Giants (2004).

The eyes of Arizona sports fans will be in San Francisco on Monday night as the Cardinals make their first ever opening week appearance on Monday Night Football at Monster Park and the Diamondbacks begin a crucial series against the Giants at AT&T Park.

While the Cardinals will be looking for an early NFC win, the D-backs are battling for the National League West title as the season hits the stretch run.

The competition was a little friendlier on June 5, when Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt, along with quarterback Matt Leinart and wide receiver Anquan Boldin, took batting practice at Chase Field before the D-backs defeated the visiting Giants 4-3. While Whisenhunt and Boldin took several to the warning track, it was Leinart who stole the show. He hit three out, including two in his final three swings and one that traveled an estimated 400 feet.

“As slow as they were throwing to us, trying to hit it out of this park, was unbelievable, especially when they really start trying to throw that heat in there,” Whisenhunt said. “It's a good opportunity to appreciate athletes in another sport and what they do.”

CARDS-49ERS CONNECTIONS

Cardinals Head Coach Ken Whisenhunt coached alongside San Francisco Head Coach Mike Nolan when both were with

the New York Jets in 2000. Whisenhunt coached the tight ends while Nolan served as defensive coordinator. Cardinals offensive coordinator Todd Haley, running backs coach Maurice Carthon and strength and conditioning coach John Lott also served on that staff.

Cardinals assistant head coach Russ Grimm roamed the same sideline as San Francisco Head Coach Mike Nolan

when both were coaching for the Washington Redskins from 1997-99. Grimm coached the offensive line and Nolan was defensive coordinator.

San Francisco wide receivers coach/senior assistant Jerry Sullivan was the wide receivers coach for the Arizona

Cardinals from 2001-2002 and he was the offensive coordinator in 2003.

San Francisco tight ends coach Pete Hoener got his first NFL

coaching job with the St. Louis Cardinals tutoring tight ends from 1985-86. Hoener spent three seasons with the Cardinals in Arizona, 2001-02 as the tight ends coach and 2003 as the offensive line coach.

San Francisco offensive line coach George Warhop held the

same position with the Cardinals from 1998-2002.

San Francisco special teams coordinator Al Everest served in

the same capacity for the Cardinals from 1996-99.

San Francisco assistant special teams coach Jeff Rodgers

coached at the University of Arizona from 2001-02. San Francisco secondary coach Johnnie Lynn coached at

the University of Arizona from 1987-93 before moving onto the NFL the following season as the secondary coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

San Francisco kicker Joe Nedney played with the Cardinals

from 1997 through the first four games of 1999 before being waived.

Arizona wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald played on the same team at Pittsburgh as San Francisco cornerback Shawntae Spencer and punter Andy Lee. Fitzgerald (3rd overall),

Spencer (58th overall) and Lee (188th

overall) were all drafted in the 2004 NFL Draft.

San Francisco linebacker Derek Smith is a former Arizona

State Sun Devil (1995-1996) where he started every game his junior and senior season at linebacker. Lining up alongside Cardinals Ring of Honor inductee Pat Tillman at ASU, Smith

earned honorable mention All Pac-10 honors as a senior in 1996.

San Francisco tight end/long snapper Brian Jennings is a

Mesa, AZ native where he was prepped at Red Mountain High School lettering in football, basketball, and track. He played his college football at Arizona State with Cardinals fullback Terrelle Smith from 1997-99.

Cardinals RB J.J. Arrington played his college ball at the

University of California and was in attendance for Cal’s week one victory over Tennessee last Saturday. Cardinals TE Troy Bienemann is from Santa Clara, CA (St.

Francis High School). He was out of football last season and attended 49ers games as a fan.

The Cardinals added two new faces to their 53-man roster that were not with the team during the preseason.

DE Quentin Moses

Drafted by the Raiders in the third round (65th

overall) of the 2007 NFL Draft out of Georgia and was released by Oakland on their final cut on 9/1. The Athens, GA native finished his college career with 25 sacks for the Bulldogs, good for sixth in school history. As a senior in 2006, Moses collected 33 tackles, 4.5 sacks, and 32 quarterback pressures.

WR Jerheme Urban

Originally entered the NFL as an undrafted rookie free agent with the Seattle Seahawks in 2003 out of Trinity University. He appeared in 11 games with two starts for Seattle between 2003 and ’05, while also spending time on the team’s practice squad. He signed with the Cowboys in October of 2006 and spent the rest of the season on Dallas’ practice squad. He has 13 receptions for 268 yards (20.6 yard avg.) with one touchdown in his NFL career.
