Head Coach Joe Walton18th Season - Pittsburgh ’57

At the forefront of the football renaissance at RobertMorris University throughout its 18-year history is JoeWalton, who has built the Colonials from a fledglingprogram into one of the top Football ChampionshipSubdivision (FCS) teams in the region.

The one constant associated with the program,Walton was named the first head coach July 27, 1993. Hestarted the program from scratch, completing every-thing from hiring assistant coaches to purchasingequipment to recruiting student-athletes for theteam’s inaugural season in 1994.

Walton’s fingerprints are all over the football pro-gram, and to prove that, RMU has played its homegames since 2005 in a stadium that bears his name.

During his tenure, Walton has led Robert Morris to the first NortheastConference championship in 1996, guided RMU to a perfect 10-0 season in 2000and in 2010 helped lead the Colonials to the NEC’s inaugural bid to the NCAA FCSPlayoffs with their league-high sixth regular-season championship.

“It’s hard to believe,” Walton speaks on how fast time has elapsed. “I’ve said thismany times before, and I mean it when I say that this situation is one of the bestthings that has ever happened to me in my life. It happened at the right time. Before this position became available, I felt I was too young to quit coaching, but Iwasn’t anxious to get back into pro football. When this came along, it was the per-fect fit. This situation was the perfect opportunity for me to continue to do what Ilike to do, and I’ve loved every minute of it.”

Under Walton’s tutelage, the Colonials have claimed outright NEC regular-sea-son titles three times (1997, 1999, 2000) while sharing three others (1996, 1998,2010). Walton led Robert Morris to back-to-back ECAC Bowl victories in 1996 and1997, and in 1999 and 2000 he guided RMU to a pair of NCAA I-AA mid-majornational crowns according to Don Hansen’s National Weekly Football Gazette.

In 2010, Walton added to his legacy by engineering the Colonials on an eight-game winning streak for a share of the NEC regular-season title and the NEC’s firstbid in the NCAA FCS Playoffs. In the process he picked up his 100th career victoryin the collegiate ranks.

DeGol Field (Attendance: 2,338) - Robert Morris scored 21 points in the fourth quarter to breakopen a close game and in the process stretched its winning streak to four with a 35-14 victoryover in-state rival Saint Francis. RMU notched the program’s 100th victory in 17 seasons as aDivision I program thanks to the win over the Red Flash.

Robert Morris got off to a fast start, taking the opening kickoff and marching 64 yards onnine plays to take an early 7-0 lead when running back Josh Keil scored from a yard out. The bigplay came on 3rd-and-6 from the RMU 40-yard line, when quarterback Jeff Sinclair completed a35-yard pass to wide receiver Anthony Coleman.

The advantage for the Colonials jumped to 14-0 at the 4:58 mark of the first quarter whenSinclair hit wide receiver T.J. Green with a nine-yard touchdown pass.

Saint Francis cracked the scoreboard in the second quarter to cut its deficit in half, 14-7,when John Kelly connected with Omar Winston for an eight-yard touchdown pass with 4:41 leftbefore halftime.

The Red Flash looked poised to tie the game heading into the break, driving to the RMU three-yard line with under a minute to play. However, on 3rd-and-goal Kelly was intercepted by line-backer Alex DiMichele, who returned the pick 25 yards before being tackled.

Defense took center stage in the third quarter before Robert Morris continued its trend ofscoring points in bunches in the final 15 minutes of play. RMU opened the fourth quarter by driv-ing to the 25-yard line of Saint Francis before stalling and was faced with a 4th-and-1 situation.

The Colonials called a timeout, and out of the break Sinclair faked a handoff to senior runningback Raphael Johnson and found tight end Paul Evans streaking down the middle of the field fora touchdown and a 21-7 lead for the Colonials.

The Red Flash went three-and-out on their next possession, and Robert Morris used justthree plays to expand its advantage to 28-7 when Sinclair hit Coleman with a 14-yard touchdownpass. Sinclair fin-ished 18-for-24 passing for 211 yards and two touchdowns against the Hawks, and hiscompletion percentage of 75 percent ranks as the fifth highest in RMU single-game his-tory. For Sinclair, it marked his second straight stellar performance at Kessler Field inWest Long Branch, N.J. As a freshman, Sinclair finished 13-for-17 passing in a 23-9 winover Monmouth Nov. 21, 2009, with his completion percentage of 76.5 percent in thatcontest ranking as the third highest in the Colonial single-game record book.

Thanks to the two scoresthrough the air from Sinclair, Robert Morris improved to 9-2 (.818) when he tosses twoor more touchdown passes in a game.

A New No. 1 - Senior tight end Shadrae King tied a career high with nine receptions ina 23-20 victory @ Monmouth (10/1), compiling 104 yards receiving and a pair of touch-downs. In addition to recording his third career 100-yard receiving game, King becamethe program’s all-time leading receiver. He enters Saturday’s game against SaintFrancis with 115 career catches, which eclipsed the record of 112 that was held by for-mer wide receiver Tyjuan Massey (2002-05). King also owns career totals of 18 touch-down catches and 1,373 career receiving yards, which rank third and fifth, respective-ly, all-time at Robert Morris. Opponents haveaveraged just 90.5 yards rushing against the Colonials so far this year, which leads theNortheast Conference while ranking 13th in the NCAA Football ChampionshipSubdivision (FCS). The school record for rushing defense is held by the 2006 Colonials, which allowed an average of 99.8 yards per game. In RMU’s final final non-conferencegame of the 2011 campaign @ Morgan State (9/17), Jackson caught his first collegiatetouchdown with a seven-yard reception in the fourth quarter. In a 23-20 win @Monmouth (10/1), Jackson was key in RMU’s eventual game-winning drive, hauling in a26-yard catch that moved the ball to the 25-yard line of the Hawks. Over the last twogames, Jackson owns seven receptions for 103 yards and a touchdown, an average of14.7 yards per catch. Game #4 • Robert Morris 23, Monmouth 20October 1, 2011 • West Long Branch, N.J.

Kessler Field (Attendance: 2,896) - Junior quarterback Jeff Sinclair's21-yard touchdown pass to senior tight end Shadrae King with 5:15 toplay proved to be the game winner as Robert Morris earned its firstvictory of the 2011 campaign with a 23-20 win at Monmouth

The final score of the contest capped a nine-play, 79-yard drive byRMU that was aided by one of Monmouth’s 13 penalties on the after-noon. Faced with a 4th-and-4 situation at their own 27-yard line, theColonials were set to punt, but a substitution infraction by the Hawkspushed the ball up five yards to the Robert Morris 32-yard line andgave RMU both a first down and new life.

Sinclair capitalized, hitting King for a 10-yard completion beforehooking up with junior wide receiver Rickeem Jackson for a 26-yardstrike down the visiting sideline that moved the ball to the Monmouth25-yard line.

Three plays later Sinclair connected with King, who pulled threedefenders four yards into the end zone for the score. The extra pointby junior Greg Langer, however, was blocked by Jose Gumbs, keepingRMU’s lead at three.

Monmouth drove to the RMU 32-yard on its next possession, but thedrive stalled when junior linebacker Brad Banas broke up a KyleFrazier pass intended for Tyler George on 3rd-and-6. Eric Spillanetried to tie the game with a 49-yard field goal attempt, but his effortfell short.

The Colonials got the ball back with 2:18 to play but couldn’t recorda first down to put the game away, instead punting the ball back to theHawks with 1:36 remaining. Monmouth was able to drive into RobertMorris territory, reaching the 36-yard line, but Frazier’s last gasp passattempt to the end zone with 0.5 seconds left on the clock wasknocked away by the Colonials.

A tightly contested affair all afternoon, Robert Morris took an early7-0 lead on its first possession of the game when Sinclair connectedwith King for a 19-yard touchdown pass. The Hawks tied it, 7-7, withjust 29 seconds left in the first quarter when Frazier hit MitchellPollard with a six-yard touchdown pass.

The game eventually entered halftime tied, 10-10, and the Hawksgrabbed their first lead of the afternoon early in the third quarterwhen Patrick Gray picked up a fumble by freshman punter TonyLaMancusa and scampered 11 yards into the end zone to giveMonmouth a 17-10 advantage.

The Colonials tied it less than two minutes later when freshmanrunning back Justin Brooks scored from nine yards out. Spillane’s 36-yard field goal gave the Hawks a 20-17 lead before RMU’s final score.

Last RMU GameDr. Dre - Senior tight end Shadrae King led the Robert Morris receiving corpsin a 23-20 victory @ Monmouth (10/1), tying a career high with nine recep-tions for 104 yards and a pair of touchdowns. It marked the 23rd straightgame dating back to the 2009 campaign that King has recorded at least onereception, a new school record. King eclipsed the mark of former wide receiv-er Opio Gary (1998-2000), who closed out his Robert Morris career by postingat least one reception in each of his final 22 games.

Pick Pockets - Robert Morris wouldn’t have been able to pick up its first vic-tory of the 2011 campaign with a 23-20 win @ Monmouth (10/1) without thecontributions it received from the secondary. Senior cornerback Alex Tarrand junior safety Cameron Chadwick led the Colonials in tackles against theHawks, finishing with nine and eight, respectively. More importantly, thepair each recorded an interception and returned it 39 yards, with Chadwick’ssetting up RMU’s second touchdown of the afternoon, a nine-yard run byfreshman running back Justin Brooks. In the win over the Monmouth, a totalof 30 of RMU’s 65 (46.2 percent) tackles came courtesy of the secondary.

200 MPH - For quarterback Jeff Sinclair, his 211-yard passing performance ina 23-20 victory @ Monmouth (10/1) marked just the fifth time in his careerhe’s eclipsed 200 yards passing in a game and the first time in 11 games dat-ing back to last season. However, Robert Morris owns a record of 4-1 (.800)when Sinclair passes for 200 or more yards in a contest.

Experience Counts - A young Robert Morris stable of running backs shouldhave a veteran offensive line to work with in 2011, which could help aid in thedevelopment of the group. Despite junior Nate Hargraves earning his firsttwo career starts at right tackle the last two games, the other four membersof the offensive line have combined for 75 career starting assignments. Theleader of the group is senior right guard Brad Rodgers, who owns 26 careerstarts on the line, including 24 straight. Seniors Brian Bevilacqua (LG) andLogan Miles (C) own 20 and 19 career starts, respectively, while sophomoreA.J. Dalton (LT) has been in the starting lineup 10 times.

Many Happy Returns - Senior Anthony Coleman has been a rock for RobertMorris on special teams throughout his career, as the wide receiver entersSaturday’s game against Saint Francis owning Robert Morris career recordsfor kickoff returns (86) and kickoff return yards (1,810). Thanks to his con-sistency on special teams, Coleman owns 2,729 career all-purpose yards, which ranks seventh all-time at Robert Morris. Coleman has a chance tobecome just the sixth player in school history to eclipse 3,000 career all-pur-pose yards in his final season of eligibility.

Start Me Up - Seniors Anthony Coleman and Brad Rodgers each enterSaturday’s game against Saint Francis as RMU’s active leader in career start-ing assignments with 26. Coleman has started 26 straight at wide receiver, the longest active streak for consecutive starts, while Rodgers owns 24straight starts on the offensive line and 26 overall.

New Balance - The starting lineup in RMU’s game @ Morgan State (9/17) fea-tured a pair of student-athletes making their first career start in a Colonialuniform, as sophomore Donte Jeter started at split end, while junior NateHargraves got the nod at right tackle. The duo pushed the number ofColonials to make their first career start on the 2011 season to 16.

Defense Wins Championships - Through four games of the 2011 campaign,Robert Morris has allowed its opponents to convert just 53 first downs (13.3per game), a total that leads the Northeast Conference. A big key to that num-ber is that opponents have converted just 31.5 percent (17-for-54) of itsopportunities on third down, which ranks second in the NEC.

NEC Champions since 1996

Near and Far - Junior defensive lineman Nolan Nearhoof, a member of the 2011 All-NECPreseason Team, put together arguably his best game in a Robert Morris uniform @Morgan State (9/17). Nearhoof compiled a career-high 11 tackles to tie for game-highhonors, including four tackles for losses that totaled 20 yards. Included among thosetackle totals were two and-a-half sacks, his first of the 2011 campaign. Nearhoofenters Saturday’s game against Saint Francis tied for third in the NEC in sacks (2.5) andfourth in the circuit in tackles for loss (6.5). He also enters the contest just a half a sackaway from cracking the top 10 all-time at Robert Morris in the category, as he has com-piled 11 so far in 24 career games.

Snapping a Streak - Junior quarterback Jeff Sinclair, who tied an RMU single-seasonschool record with 22 touchdown passes last season, completed his first touchdownpass of the 2011 campaign with a nine-yard strike to sophomore tight end VinceMongelluzzo in the fourth quarter @ Liberty (9/10). For Sinclair, it snapped a streak of80 passing attempts without a touchdown dating back to the 2010 campaign, thelongest drought of his career.

An Important Position - While junior quarterback Jeff Sinclair snapped one streak @Liberty (9/10), the recipient on the other end of his touchdown pass was sophomoretight end Vince Mongelluzzo, who recorded his first career reception. One of the mostimportant positions in head coach Joe Walton’s offense, Mongelluzzo is the 18th dif-ferent tight end in the 18-year history of the program to post a touchdown catch. Infact, Mongelluzzo is currently one of four tight ends in school history whose only catchis a touchdown, joining junior Tyler Digby and former Colonials Jeremy Wise (2002-05)and Sean McElhinny (2007-10).

Home Sweet Home - Slowly but surely, Robert Morris has learned to protect its hometurf at Joe Walton Stadium. Thanks to a 42-24 win over Central Connecticut State(11/6/10) that clinched a share of the 2010 Northeast Conference championship, RMUstretched its winning streak at “The Joe” to eight games, the longest winning streak atthe facility since opening the stadium in 2005. Despite a 19-13 setback to Dayton (9/3)in the 2011 season opener that snapped the eight-game surge, overall Robert Morrisowns a record of 17-15 (.531) in seven seasons at Joe Walton Stadium.

Foot Joy - One of the most important aspects that junior Jeff Sinclair brings to thequarterback position at Robert Morris is his versatility. In RMU’s season openeragainst Dayton (9/3) at Joe Walton Stadium, Sinclair scored the first touchdown of theyear for the Colonials with a five-yard run with 10:43 to play in the second quarter thatgave RMU a 7-6 advantage. In 22 career games, Sinclair has already rushed for ninetouchdowns. To put that in perspective, prior to Sinclair becoming the starter undercenter at RMU, quarterbacks combined for 16 rushing touchdowns in the first 156games of the program’s history.

Saturday Night Lights - Robert Morris traveled to Lynchburg, Va., and dropped a 38-7decision @ Liberty (9/10) in the second week of the season in a game that kicked off at7:00 p.m. It marks just the sixth time in the 18-year history of the program theColonials played a game with a kickoff after 5:00 p.m. RMU owns a record of 1-5 (.167)all-time in night games, with all six of the previous contests coming on the road. Thetilt against Liberty is one of two games on the 2011 Robert Morris schedule that is anight game, as the Colonials will host their first night game in school history when theytake on Saint Francis at Joe Walton Stadium in a 7:00 p.m. kickoff Saturday, Oct. 8, aspart of the University’s Homecoming festivities.
