1. Introduction and Background The Foothills Growth and Yield Association (FGYA) was formed in 2000 to improve the assessment of lodgepole pine growth and yield in managed stands, as a basis for enhancing the sustained yield and management of Alberta’s lodgepole pine forests. Nine companies participate as voting members. The Land and Forest Division (LFD) of Alberta Sustainable Resource Development (ASRD), and the Foothills Model Forest (FtMF) are non-voting members, with the FtMF acting as the coordinating agency. The Foothills Model Forest, acting as applicant on behalf of the 9 sponsoring members, submitted a proposal to the Forest Resource Improvement Association of Alberta (FRIAA) in July 2000. A contract was issued (FOOMOD-01-01 – Foothills Growth and Yield Association) on July 25, 2000, facilitating use of FRIP (Forest Resource Improvement Program) funds to cover membership costs and specified project activities. The original proposal and contract had an initial term of 2 years, and were amended in September 2001 and May 2003, extending the term to 5 years (April 1, 2000 to March 31, 2005). Activities approved for support under Project FOOMOD-01-01 were: • Sub-project 1: Development and management of the Association, including project planning,

management, field co-ordination, analysis and reporting. • Sub-project 2: Lodgepole pine regeneration trial. The sponsoring partners undertook

scheduled fieldwork, and under the terms of the Project acceptance could be reimbursed with FRIP funds subject to approval of individual supplementary applications to FRIAA.

During the Project term the FGYA received FRIAA approvals for funding of two additional projects: FOOMOD-01-02 (Measurement and Maintenance of Historic Research Trials), and OF-02-16 (Enhanced Management of Lodgepole Pine). These are reported separately, as noted in Section 2 below. This report fulfills the requirements for final technical and financial reports as stated Schedule B of the Project authorization (latest amendment and approval dated May 20th, 2003). • Section 2 contains a summary of work and tasks accomplished, including information on data

and technical manuscripts funded through and developed expressly for this Project. • Section 3 is a crop performance report for the lodgepole pine regeneration trial (summarizing

status of the Project’s major trial as of March 31, 2005), with further details provided in Appendix 1.

• Section 4 summarizes expenditures incurred throughout the life of the Project, and reconciles these with the FRIAA moneys paid. Details of eligible FRIP (and other) expenditures are included in Appendix 2.

2. Summary of Work and Tasks Accomplished 2.1. Project Development The Association’s Steering Committee approved a 5-year business plan in 2002. The plan identified 6 projects to be undertaken during the period April 1, 2002 – March 31, 2007, and was updated in 2003. Work plans were developed annually, and reports were submitted after the end of each financial year (April 31 to March 31) to FRIAA. During the 5-year project period from April 1, 2000 to March 31, 2005 the Foothills Growth and Yield Association (FGYA) developed the following 6 projects. 1. Development and management of the Association (FRIAA Project Foothills Growth and

Yield Association, # FOOMOD-01-01, Sub-Project 1); this Project is the main subject of this report, and included management of the 5 other Projects listed below;

2. Lodgepole pine regeneration (FRIAA Project # FOOMOD-01-01, Sub-Project 2); 3. Comparison of pre-harvest and post-harvest stand development (also conducted under the

auspices of Project # FOOMOD-01-01, as an extension of Sub-Project 2); 4. Cooperative management of historic research trials (FRIAA Project Measurement and

Maintenance of Historic Research Trials, # FOOMOD-01-02) – collaborative project with ASRD and the Canadian Forest Service (CFS);

5. Regional yield estimators (collaborative project with ASRD); 6. Enhanced management of lodgepole pine (FRIAA Project # OF-02-16) – based on Sub-

Project 3 as originally identified in the original FOOMOD-01-01 proposal. Work and tasks accomplished are summarized below, with emphasis on the first 3 projects, which were funded directly under FOOMOD-01-01. Details on the other projects are reported elsewhere. 2.2. Field Research Installations and Data The locations of field research installations installed and / or maintained and measured during the project term are shown in Figure 1. 2.2.1. Regenerated Lodgepole Pine Trial The Project consists of a long-term field trial, established in 2001, and interim forecasting of effects using available models and data. The trial is a three-level split-plot design. The basic balanced design consists of 90 field installations (5 ecosites x 6 spacings x 3 replications), with each installation split 2 ways into 4 treatment plots (weeding, thinning, weeding and thinning, no weeding or thinning). Twelve additional installations (6 spacings x 2 replications) have been added in the modal ecosite category, to produce a total of 102 installations. Details of the design, installations and procedures are provided in an Establishment Report (April 2003) and a periodically updated field manual. A Crop Performance Report (as of March 31, 2005) describing the status of all installations at the end of the 5-year project term follows in Section 3. All data are stored in a Microsoft Access relational database maintained by the Foothills Model Forest at the Hinton Training Centre. The database has been annually updated and distributed to the 11 member organizations of the Association. 2.2.2. Comparison of Pre-harvest and Post-harvest Stand Productivity The FGYA completed a comparison of pre-harvest and post-harvest site indices. The specific purpose of the comparison was to provide credible and reliable forecasts of post-harvest site index, for the main site types of interest to members, relative to pre-harvest values. In 2004

results were presented at a major international forestry conference and published in the conference proceedings.1 The field data are stored in a Microsoft Access database at the Hinton Training Centre (Foothills Model Forest) and have been distributed to the Association membership. 2.2.3. Historic Research Trials In August 2001, representatives of the FGYA, the CFS (Canadian Forest Service), and ASRD (Alberta Sustainable Resource Development) visited historic CFS lodgepole pine trials. They concluded that these trials were invaluable resources for forecasting, monitoring and demonstrating the effects of nutrition and density management, and that links should be forged to ensure their ongoing protection, measurement and interpretation. In 2002 the Director General of the Northern Forestry Centre, the Executive Director of the ASRD Forest Management Branch, and the Chairman of the FGYA signed a Letter of Agreement facilitating the collaborative arrangements necessary to provide forest managers in Alberta with the full and continued benefit of relevant long-term field trials established to assess the responses of lodgepole pine to nutrition and density management. The FGYA is maintaining and periodically re-measuring 13 trials. Analysis are being undertaken by the CFS. Field data are stored at the CFS Northern Forestry Centre and at the Foothills Model Forest, Hinton. 2.3. Technical Documentation 2.3.1. 3. Lodgepole Pine Regeneration Trial - Crop Performance Report As described in the Lodgepole Pine Regeneration Project Establishment Report referenced above, the Lodgepole Pine Regeneration Trial was established between 2000 and 2002 to assess the effects of site, competition, and density management on early crop performance and stand growth and yield. Detailed analysis and modeling of results will commence in the second term of the Project in 2006, when 5 growing seasons will have elapsed since planting. The following is a summary of crop performance, relative to establishment targets, as of April 31, 2005 (the completion of the first Project term). Further details are provided for each of the 408 treatment plots in Appendix 1. As of April 30, 2005, 3 growing seasons were elapsed since planting for the majority of the 102 installations. Figure 3 (above) and Table 1 (below) show the average densities (stems per ha) at the end of the 2004 growing season of live healthy planted lodgepole pine by site class (“eco-class”) and target density for each of the 5 planted treatments (the unplanted control is not shown).

Table 1 includes the same information as Figure 3 further broken down by groups (replicates) of installations (i.e. averages for each combination of site, target density and group). Information is reported at the individual treatment plot level in Appendix 1. The achieved densities provide a suitable range for evaluating future density effects. Mortality has occurred and been measured since planting, and some continued mortality is expected and will be monitored. On some sites mortality is likely to be more than offset by the ingress of natural regeneration. This is why the trial has been designed to accommodate a future thinning treatment, which will involve a reduction of density on half of each 1-ha installation to the target value if it is exceeded. Figure 4 compares average shrub-herb competition indices for “weeding” and “no weeding” treatments by eco-class as recorded at the latest measurement. (Weeding was intended to maintain competition indices below 60 %.) Table 2 shows average and maximum index values for treatment plots in more detail. In most weeded installations the index was kept below 60%. Where this threshold was exceeded, plots were scheduled for weeding the following year.

Figure 5 compares average deciduous densities (stems per ha) for “weeding” and “no weeding” treatments by eco-class as recorded at the latest measurement. Note the major differences in average deciduous densities between vegetation control treatments, particularly in eco-classes 3, 3 and 4. Weeding was intended initially to maintain densities below 400 stems per ha; however, this target was relaxed in some installations where field inspections indicated that higher values were unlikely to be creating significant competition to the planted lodgepole pine). Table 3 shows average and maximum index values in more detail. The substantial difference achieved in competition levels between treatment plots within installations (in which other factors are controlled) will provide an excellent basis for evaluating competition effects on future growth and survival.

Figures 6 and 7 show average stem diameters and heights respectively of planted seedlings as measured at the end of their third growing season since out-planting. Tables 4 show the same information plus average height-diameter ratios. There are major site-related differences emerging, plus some evidence of increased diameters and reduced heights associated with weeding. These effects will be fully evaluated in the second term of the Project.
