Smothers Brothers History: Tom andDick Smothers have been making peo-ple laugh for more than f ive decades, blending hilarious brotherly banter withunparalleled showmanship, musical tal-ents, and yo-yo skills to boot. With 12top-selling albums, a number one televi-

150th Anniversary Celebration of the Miners Foundry

Miners Foundry Timeline1855: Ironworks foundry and blacksmith shop opens to repair andreplace heavy machinery manufactured in San Francisco andSacramento and hauled to the mining camps by teams of horses andoxen.1856: Fire destroys most of Nevada City, including the Foundry.1859: The Foundry is rebuilt using local granite and natural stone, andis named The Nevada Iron and Brass Foundry and Machine Shop1862: It is believed Andrew Hallidie, inventor of San Francsicos cablecar system, builds the second Pine St. Bridge over Deer Creek withequipment cast at the Foundry.1878: Lester Pelton models, tests, and manufactures the Pelton Wheel.*1907: Foundry is sold to William Martin and renamed Miners Foundry.Martin previously owned the local Mayflower Mine which yielded amillion dollar takeout in five years. He used the first commmercialPelton Wheel to operate his stamp mill. Foundry expands, fabricatessteel, makes pipe fittings, rails, ore cars, and supplies for GeneralElectric as well as gateballs for Hoover Dam, steel pieces for the spireof the TransAmerica Building in San Francisco, decorative pieces, partsfor Liberty ships and the Wee Willie state-of-the-art juicer.

1965: Building is purchased by Ray Amick who sells off machinery, although some steel fabrication continued.1974: Foundry is purchased by Charles Woods and David Osborn, SanFrancisco artists, who change the name to the American VictorianMuseum, and convert the building, creating a venue for the performingarts. Community radio KVMR begins broadcasting.1989: Foundry is purchased by Nevada City Winery; Victorian Museumrelocates.1990: Foundry is donated to the Nevada County Cultural PreservationTrust and renamed Miners Foundry Cultural Center; for cultural, histori-

cal, business, social and community events.

Originally built in 1855 as an ironworks foundry, theMiners Foundry today has evolved into one of the areastop cultural venues. On Sunday, September 27th theMiners Foundry will celebrate its 150th anniversary. Sothe math tells you that the foundry is really 154 yearsold. Yes and no. The original foundry building built in1855 burned to the ground in 1856 in a fire thatdestroyed most of Nevada City. The foundry was rebuiltin 1859 using granite and natural stone. Over the

course of its years of service the foundry has had manynames, functions, and owners (see Foundry Timeline).

The 150th Anniversary celebration will be a freefamily event featuring games, interactive displays, aworking stamp mill, and more. The celebration willtake place from 11:00am until 3:00pm at 325 SpringStreet in downtown Nevada City. All ages can learnhands on about the history of where we live whileenjoying hot Cornish pasties, cold ice cream, and pop-

corn, plus live entertainment from the Humbugs and theCornish Choir. You also have the opportunity to add anitem to the time capsule which will be buried later thisyear during the gala celebration. For 150 years theMiners Foundry has been an integral part of daily life inNevada City and a testament to recycling historic build-ings for present day use. It has a rich history of hostinghigh school proms, weddings, film festivals, communitygatherings, renowned speakers and artists, and much

    more.
