The goal of the event is to inform, educate, train and introduce the public through activities, demonstrations and exhibits of hunting, fishing, recreational shooting, archery, wildlife watching, off-highway vehicle and watercraft recreation, wildlife conservation, wildlife education, camping, trapping and other related outdoor activities.

“We find that this event draws mostly families,” Tom Cadden, the Public Information Officer for Arizona Game and Fish said. “It’s not necessarily people that are experts when it comes to outdoor recreation. A lot of people are coming out here because they want to learn more about what is available.”

Many options are offered for children including the ability to handle a variety of wildlife, try archery or borrow fishing equipment to use at the catch-and-release fish tanks.

“Society keeps becoming more urbanized with more demands on their time,” Cadden said. “We aren’t getting outdoors the way we used to. Kids have more distraction, activities, video games and the internet. We hope this is a good way to get more people engaged in the outdoors whether it’s hunting, fishing, wildlife or other outdoor activities.”

Along with events for children there will be a variety of exhibits, from a boat show, to displays and tips on riding off highway vehicles responsibly and fishing and hunting tips from local experts.

Those interested in shooting sports also can try a variety of weapons, from cowboy action guns, rifle and pistols attempting trap and skeet shooting. All told there will be 150 exhibitors and vendors.

Along with participation activities there is also a spectator event as Cowboy Action Shooters will compete in mounted shooting competitions at both 9 and 11 a.m., Saturday and Sunday where contestants have to shoot targets while navigating a course on horseback as quickly as possible.

From 2004, when the initial expo drew just 1,000 people, Cadden said the growth has been very encouraging. Cabellas is one of the main sponsors for the event.

The Arizona Outdoor Expo is set for 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., Saturday and from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m., Sunday.

The Ben Avery Shooting Facility is located at 4044 W. Black Canyon Blvd. in Phoenix, located on Carefree Highway, about 1/2 mile west of I-17.

Expo parking and admission is free. For info on the event go to azgfd.gov.

Clutch hitting carries Boulder Creek to win

The Boulder Creek Jaguars baseball team has used the Coach Bob National Invitational as a chance to come together each season.

The event, which draws teams from around the country, is named in memory of the late Jaguars assistant coach Bob Weinheimer.

“It’s a huge tournament for

us,” senior pitcher Garrett Osterode said. “It’s a goal each season for us to win the tournament. He was a great coach and we try to win it to honor him.”

On Monday the Jaguars started a stretch of 13 games in eight days, one coach Joe McDonald hopes will bring his team together.

AIRLINES ARE HIRING

Following a doubleheader sweep, which started with a 13-3 win over Thunder Mountain, a squad from Alaska and concluded with an 8-2 win over Fossil Ridge, out of Colorado, the veteran coach said he saw some encouraging signs from his team, which won its fourth straight game to improve to 8-6 on the season.

“We’re just working to get better each day,” McDonald said. “This is a week to grow. We’re learning how to win.”

In the win over Fossil Ridge the formula included two-out hitting and an effective performance from Osterode, who pitched five innings, giving up just one unearned run despite walking four hitters, hitting two while allowing two hits.

“Garrett was effectively wild,” McDonald said. “He’s a competitor. He didn’t have his best stuff, but you know he’s going to give you everything he has.”

Osterode faced base runners in every inning, but picked off a runner and struck out five to evade trouble.

The Jaguars would never trail as senior Garrett Grant got the home team on the board first with a two-out double in the first inning. Osterode followed with an RBI single to center to make the score 2-0.

Fossil Ridge got one back with

an unearned run on a throwing error in the third, but Boulder Creek responded with a game-turning rally in the fourth.

Up 2-1, the Jaguars first two runners reached on walks. Osterode couldn’t get a sacrifice bunt down in two tries, but flew out to right, allowing the Jaguars lead runner to tag and go to third. When Sabercats senior starter Sean Seulter earned a strikeout, for the second out of the inning, he put himself in position to escape the inning unscathed.

Instead junior Vince Montana came up with a two-run RBI single to center to make the score 4-1.

“Coach talks about how two out RBIs win games all the time,” Montana said. “My first at bat he threw me a lot of curve balls. I didn’t see the ball very well. The second time I did a better job staying back and was trying to go the other way. We’re stepping things up offensively.”

Montana’s effort was followed by a walk, an RBI infield hit by Jayce Bolen and then an RBI hit from Drew Lawrence.

That proved more than enough for Osterode.

“At times I was wild, but I located my curve ball pretty well,” he said. “Those two-out

RBIs for us were big. We’re not a great hitting team, but when we get it going we can be pretty good and we’re getting better.”

Freshman Mitchell Allen relieved Osterod, pitching a scoreless sixth before giving up an unearned win in the seventh.

The rest of the week included two games on Tuesday (results unavailable at press time), a game against Broken Arrow at 3:30 p.m. today, a pair of games on Thursday including a 7 p.m., tilt at Grand Canyon University, a 3:30 p.m., Friday home game, a 12:30 p.m. contest on Saturday, and then doubleheaders at both 12:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday. Black Mountain tests legs, lungs, offers great views mARC BUCKHOUT

mANAGING EDITORBefore the summer sun makes

being outdoors as appealing as working on your taxes during a trip to the dentist for a root canal, a visit to Black Mountain in Cave Creek offers a challenging, but rewarding hike.

Located in the heart of Cave Creek, just off Schoolhouse Road, Black Mountain stands approximately 3,400 feet, a combination of black

sedimentary rocks on the west side and granite on the east. This hike offers next to nothing in the way of shade so picking the proper time of day and year are important in order to enjoy the adventure.

From the parking lot, at approximately 2,200 feet elevation, the trail initially

follows a paved road. After a short climb the actual hiking trail veers off to the left, but on this day as many people remained on the road as

changed course to take the trail.Whichever route one takes the

two meet perhaps one third of the way up the mountain. Either way, this hike doesn’t waste any time gaining elevation.

After a steady .5 mile climb, the paved road curves to the right, passing a water tank and cresting a saddle, opening up views to the southwest. At approximately 2,500 feet those travelling the road must leave the pavement and join the rest of the hikers on the trail.

As a marginally in shape person both the lungs and the legs began to feel the burn as the challenge got sterner as the steps on the rocky trail got steeper.

Although the local gym might be more convenient, it’s hard to imagine a Stairmaster could put its users through a better test than the one being offered on this warm, but breezy day. And the panoramic view of Cave Creek and the surrounding area were impressive in every direction.

All told the trek to the top of the mountain took just more than an hour. While trying to catch my breath at the top and enjoying the views I noticed a marker in the ground with the date 1946 Cave Creek. The marker was placed by the U.S.

National Geodetic Survey, a federal agency that defines and manages a national coordinate system, providing the foundation for transportation and communication; mapping and charting along with a large number of applications of science and engineering.

Apparently the original marker was replaced in 1974. Around the outside it reads, “For information or to report damage write The Director National Geodetic Survey Washington D.C.”

Trying to envision what the area looked like some 67 years earlier proved challenging, much less thinking what it must have been like when the Hohokam, who were said to have settled around 750 and or the Apache who inhabited the region from 1450 – 1870 prior to Cave Creek’s emergence as a mining area.

Initially the trek down the mountain is a little slow as footing is important due to the steepness of the descent, but after the initial 15 minutes leaving the peak, the rest of the trip down the mountain is considerably smoother and easier.

Although I’ve seen distances of as short as 2.2 miles roundtrip for the hike as well as 2.5 miles,

the Map My Hike application on my iPhone suggested a distance of 3.01 miles.

Here’s our unscientific five point scale ranking each hike.

Scenery: 4 – Upon making it to the top great view are available in every direction. There are a couple spots along the way up where you get a sense of just how steep a climb you’re attempting.

Accessibility: 4.5 – There isn’t a great deal of parking, or this would be a 5. That being said, it’s hard to have a nature hike much closer to civilization than Black Mountain. Five minutes after making it back to my car I was walking into El Encanto Mexican Restaurant for a post hike meal.

Fitness challenge: 3.5 - This isn’t a long hike or it would score higher. The hike to the peak is steep from the word go. For the last third of the hike it’s difficult to maintain any semblance of a normal stride with the high step ups required. Kudos go to anyone that can make the ascent without stopping to catch their breath at least a couple times.

Know of a great hike we need to feature? Share your thoughts by emailing [email protected].

Marc Buckhout/The Foothills FocusBlack Mountain, located in Cave Creek challenges hikers to a 1,200 foot climb. A panoramic view of the North Valley is available at the summit, at approximately 3,400 feet elevation.

Arizona Gives today

STAFF REPORT

Residents across the Valley and beyond are being asked to do one simple thing – give.

“On March 20, all Arizonans will be asked to participate in the first-ever Arizona Gives Day,” said Patrick McWhortor, president and CEO of the Alliance of Arizona Nonprofits, who helped to develop the initiative in partnership with the Arizona Grantmakers Forum and a team of statewide leaders.

Beginning at midnight this morning and continuing until 11:59 p.m., Arizonans can go online at AZGives.org to support a local nonprofit in

their community, or pledge their financial support to one of the hundreds of participating nonprofits across the state. A day dedicated to communities that care, Arizona Gives Day, presented by First Bank, will focus on giving back to the organizations whose invaluable efforts have helped empower communities and provide services, products and more to those in need.

Organizers of the Arizona Gives Day hope to see the same successful response during the 24-hour statewide online giving initiative today.

“For as little as $10, nonprofits in Arizona can and do make a difference,” said McWhortor. “Together, we hope to raise more than $2 million on this single day.”

According to Marissa Theisen, president and CEO of Arizona Grantmakers Forum, donations made on Arizona Gives Day will help the state’s nonprofits in a number of ways from rallying volunteers,

building leaders, developing networks, fighting for rights, and creating scholarships among others.

Among the 500 plus nonprofits participating in this event are several from around the North Valley including:

• Desert Foothills Library • Wild at Heart – Cave Creek • Yes You Have a Choice/

Sophia’s House – Cave Creek • Foothills Animal Rescue –

North Scottsdale • Pinnacle Presbyterian

Preschool – North Scottsdale • Feeding Matters – North

Scottsdale • McDowell Sonoran

Conservancy – North Scottsdale

• Mothers Awareness on School-Aged Kids (MASK) – North Scottsdale

• Dreamchaser Horse Rescue – New River

Donors can learn more about the nonprofits participating in their community by logging on to the AZGives.org where they can donate directly.

Cactus Shadows students earn Youth of Year honors

STAFF REPORT Cactus Shadows sophomore

Dani Haboush and junior Alexa Jenouri have been named 2013 Youths of the Year by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale’s Vestar and Thunderbirds branches, respectively.

In addition to representing their branches as Youths of the Year for the next 12 months, both teens were honored at the 2013 Celebrate Youth Gala and Auction, which took place on March 9 at Talking Stick Resort and Casino, each receiving a $1,000 scholarship from General Dynamics C4 Systems and Google tablets from NPCE Technology Solutions.

“As we go through our lives, we go through different smiles. Toothless, gap-toothed, full of braces, bright and shiny,” said

Haboush when she addressed the more than 600 local business and civic leaders at the gala. “We shed smiles of excitement, joy, trust, love, and hope. For me, the most important one is hope. I feel that hope can take you miles and miles down winding roads and soaring through the bright blue skies. The Boys and Girls Club has given me just that; a positive outlook and a smile on my face.”

Haboush, who has been a member of the Vestar branch for nearly six years, is a dedicated local fundraiser and volunteer active in many club programs, including:

• Junior Staff Career Development, which provides teens 14-18 hands-on work experience to teen members at the Club while developing their interpersonal skills, a

strong work ethic, a sense of community engagement.

• Money Matters, which promotes financial responsibility and independence among middle and high school Club members by building their basic money management skills.

• The Keystone Club, which focuses on community service including volunteering monthly at a local food bank and assisting with homeless shelters

• What’s Hip, which is an eight-week program for high school girls covering issues such as relationships, drug and alcohol use, self-esteem, and fashion, among others.

She will use her scholarship toward her dream of attending the University of Arizona and becoming a child psychologist when she graduates from Cactus Shadows.

Oz, there’s no film like the original

Photo courtesy of DisneyJames Franco and Mila Kunis star in Oz The Great and Powerful, Disney’s prequel to the Wizard of Oz.

mONTE yAZZIESPECIAl FOR

THE FOOTHIllS FOCUS

The Wizard of Oz is a film that endures on the summits of film history, an iconic work of filmmaking magic that garners fond memories for film fans of all ages. Trying to follow or, in the case of Oz The Great and Powerful, precede the celebrated original is a challenging charge guided by the accomplished Sam Raimi. And, while Raimi succeeds at creating an awe-inducing land of visual enchantment with flashes of gleeful reminiscent charm, these good qualities are unfortunately impeded by uneven moments that squander early promising potential.

The film begins in evocative black and white. Oscar (James Franco) is a travelling carnival magician, albeit charlatan, with an affection for the opposite sex. After pursuing the wrong woman Oscar, who goes by the stage name Oz, evades confrontation with the carnival strong man by means of hot air balloon which journeys directly into an approaching tornado. Oscar, after a spectacular fall, finds himself in the helping

hands of a witch named Theodora (Mila Kunis); she tells Oscar that he is the source of a prophecy which foretells of a powerful wizard that will come and vanquish the wicked witch and become king of Oz. Suspicion of Oscar’s intent abounds in Theodora’s sister Evanora (Rachel Weisz), who resides in the Emerald City. Oscar, a coward of a man, is enticed by the riches being offered his way and proceeds to journey through the stunning Land of Oz in pursuit of the third sister, Glinda (Michelle Williams).

Oz The Great and Powerful is a visual delight. Many of the atmospheres are lavishly created and the combination of action within those designs is executed with striking regard. Though the 3-D doesn’t work cohesively throughout the film there are a few moments when the device puts the viewer in the middle of the film. Raimi is a great director and his trademark style is seen in traces throughout the film, however the glimpses are not enough to overshadow the misgivings in the narrative and, most especially, some key performances.

In the lead James Franco

is unfortunately miscast. During the course of the film his performance seems disorganized and his wandering bravado, a consistent vocal vehicle, seems forced. The supporting cast is at times excellent in their portrayals. Michelle Williams emulates Billie Burke’s Glinda with matching glow and Rachel Weisz is the most consistent throughout in a welcome wicked role. Mila Kunis is also good, offering a naïve sensibility until a pivotal plot twist. However, Kunis can hardly be blamed considering her role could have been assisted by a subtle voice modification and some added character attributes. The narrative is the second issue with the film. Though influenced by L. Frank Baum’s novel, the film feels slightly rushed and characters aren’t given suitable time to truly find their place. The charming hints of nostalgia found within the film are what keep Oz The Great and Powerful afloat. Whether it’s the striking image of the Emerald City led by the yellow brick road or a munchkin assemble in full romp, the wistfulness and enchantment found in the 1939 film is enough to keep you intently watching.

Though Sam Raimi directs with fervent purpose, his effort is hampered by the looming shadow of the past classic. Though Oz The Great and Powerful is a spectacle that younger generations might find more relatable and interesting, for those that grew up watching the classic and reading the delightful derivations found in the novels, this film will feel ambitious yet unmemorable.

Judge lifts cloud around marijuana case The Arizona Court of Appeals

recently held that someone can be charged with a DUI for merely having evidence that a metabolite of marijuana is in their system. A local newspaper columnist compared charging drivers with a DUI, when they have used marijuana but are not high, to charging someone with

a DUI for having a few a l c o h o l i c d r i n k s two weeks earlier. The facts of the case that led to this

decision are not significantly in dispute.

A Maricopa County Sheriff Deputy observed the defendant speeding and making unsafe lane changes on State Route 51 near the Glendale Avenue exit. The deputy responded by initiating a traffic stop. After some conservation and a few field sobriety tests, the defendant admitted he “smoked weed” earlier. He was then transported so that a Drug Recognition Evaluation could

be completed. The defendant consented to

a blood test. The lab analysis concluded that the defendant had 8 ng/ml of a metabolite of THC in his system. The State then charged the defendant with driving with an illegal drug in his body under A.R.S. § 28-1381(A)(3).

The defendant’s attorney moved to dismiss the charge and argued that the statute only allowed for prosecution if the defendant had the primary metabolite for marijuana in his system. A justice of the peace held an evidentiary hearing on the defendant’s motion. At this hearing, a criminalist testified that the metabolite the defendant had in his system is the type that is inactive; but it could remain in his system for approximately one month after the date the marijuana was used.

The trial judge granted the defendant’s motion to dismiss. The prosecutor appealed and then filed a motion to reconsider. At that time, and for the first time, the prosecution brought some additional case

law to the judge’s attention. He said that, in light of these additional cases, he may have ruled incorrectly; but stated wthat he no longer had jurisdiction over the case because it had been appealed to Superior Court.

The Superior Court Commissioner who heard the appeal issued a detailed 11 page decision explaining why the trial court judge had correctly dismissed the case. In this opinion, she noted “it is conceivable that a defendant could use marijuana in California or Colorado – states which have decriminalized the use of marijuana – drive to Arizona as much as four weeks later, and be cited for driving under the influence – despite there being no impairment – because the carboxy-THC derivative may still be present in the person’s blood.” In response to her ruling, the prosecution filed a special action with the Arizona Court of Appeals.

The Arizona Court of Appeals reversed the Superior Court decision and held that the case should not have been

dismissed. The issue is whether the statute, which reads, “its metabolite” refers to the presence of any metabolite of an illegal drug or only to the active metabolite of an illegal drug. Based on previous case law, the appellate court held the legislature intended to ban driving while the presence of any illegal substance is in the driver’s body, whether that presence is capable of causing impairment or not.

The appellate opinion also rejected the defendant’s claim that Arizona’s adoption of “medical marijuana” was relevant to the case. The

opinion noted, “As an initiative measure proposed and approved by the people of Arizona, the AMMA’s adoption is immaterial to the determination of legislative intent as it relates to adoption of the DUI statutes.”

The case is State v. Harris, 2013 WL 504558 (Ariz. Ct. App. 2013).

Judge Williams is the presiding justice of the peace for the Northwest Regional Court Center. His column appears monthly in The Foothills Focus.

Feds’ spending record continues to amazeThis week President Obama

told ABC News that the current national debt, which is approaching $17 trillion, is “sustainable,” and he does not feel the need to try to balance

the budget.W h e r e

is Herbert H o o v e r when we need an e c o n o m i c genius?

Just about every honest

economist knows that running up massive debt without an effective strategy to improve the economy is flat-out dangerous. If the U.S. dollar collapses, there will be a worldwide depression that will make the recent recession look like an after-party at George Clooney’s house.

In the meantime, I can report the following federal expenditures that

the president apparently has no problem overseeing:

— $27 million to the country of Morocco to teach the folks over there how to make pottery. I guess the Moroccan government is not capable of pottery instruction. This con is courtesy of the U.S. Agency for International Development, which now has the nerve to tell us that the pottery project is “not on track to achieve its goals.” Translation, the dollars we sent were likely stolen.

— $1.5 million to the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston to study why many American lesbians are overweight. The National Institutes of Health calls the situation “an issue of high public-health significance.” Sure. Everybody’s talking about it.

— $947,000 to research a “Mars menu.” This would determine what astronauts

could eat on the planet Mars if they ever get there. NASA says it will send six volunteers into a barren Hawaiian landscape to eat stuff so it can figure out what tastes good on Mars. I am NOT making this up — with apologies to Dave Barry.

— $325,000 to develop a robotic squirrel.

The National Science Foundation wants the robots to scare rattlesnakes. The agency also says the robosquirrels will help in “public outreach.” Does anyone know what that means? Rocky? Bullwinkle?

— The National Science Foundation strikes again by funding a New York City theater company called The Civilians. They got nearly $700,000 in tax money to put on a play about “climate change and biodiversity.” Have you seen that play? No? That might be because it only played in

Kansas City. Even Al Gore hasn’t seen it.

Finally, if you check out the Alabama Watermelon Queen tour this year, know that you paid for some of it. If you visit Nebraska, you should know that your tax dollars funded a company that makes shampoo and toothpaste for pets. And if you like caviar, well, you paid for a website designed to bring those exotic fish eggs to “the masses.”

These expenditures are so stupid it hurts. But I also think they are a criminal misuse of our tax dollars. It is estimated that the federal government could save $400 billion a year by eliminating wasteful and redundant programs.

There comes a point when folks get the government they deserve. The American people re-elected Barack Obama knowing that he is the

biggest spender of all American presidents to date. In fact, Obama has spent more federal money than every president combined up until George W. Bush’s second year in office. And to this day, Obama and the Democratic Party are proud of their spending record.

The donkey is the symbol of the Democratic Party. It should be the robosquirrel.
