never had any of the warning signs of heart distress leading up to his death including lightheadedness, shortness of breath, blackouts or chest pains.

Saturday’s event will offer free screenings, which will include an echocardiogram and ECG testing with cardiologists on hand to analyze the results.

“I don’t want any parent suffering through the experience I had with my son,” Sharon said.

Since its inception the foundation has conducted two screenings annually in Arizona.

Thanks to sponsors, volunteer nurses and cardiac physicians, the foundation will perform $2,100 worth of tests for free, although a donation of $40 is suggested, which helps fund screenings for more children.

Sharon said over the years the screenings have revealed approximately one in ten youth being diagnosed with a serious, yet treatable heart condition.

As of Thursday’s interview with Bates, 9 days before the event, only 75 people had signed up to be tested. Bates is hopeful they will be able to test 500 people.

Along with the screenings attendees will also learn how to administer CPR and use a defibrillator.

Funds raised by the foundation also go toward the purchase of Automatic External Defibrillators, which are then donated to schools.

Registration is required and can completed by calling 602-482-5606 or by going to anthonybates.org. Diamond Canyon School is located at 40004 N. Liberty Bell Way in Anthem.

Spring weather draws out desert animalsCOURTESY Of

AZ GAME AND fISh

While spring continues to maintain its erratic grip on daytime temperatures, the inevitable emergence of snakes, spiders, scorpions, and lizards remains just around the next upward swing.

The Arizona Game and Fish Department is reminding the public that some simple rules can help the public avoid a potential dangerous encounter.

“Probably the simplest rule is to always know where you are putting your hands and feet,” said Zen Mocarski, information and education program manager for the Game and Fish.

Mocarski said in the spring many snakes will be seeking the warmth of the daytime sun, but during the heat of summer will seek out shade during the day and do most of their hunting during the evening hours.

“Rattlesnakes are synon ymous with Arizona,” he said. “As well they should be. We have 13 species of rattlesnake in this state.”

The most common throughout the state is the western diamondback, but where many rattlesnakes are found will depend on the existing environment. The dubious sidewinder is found in sandy areas while the black-tailed can be found from elevations ranging from nearly sea level to 9,000 feet.

“But the rules for all these snakes is to know where you are placing your hands and feet,” Mocarski said. “While accidental bites can occur, following this one simple rule can help people avoid the majority of encounters.”

If bitten, Mocarski said people should forget everything they’ve seen in old movies and seek medical attention immediately.

“There’s no such thing as an ordinary rattlesnake bite,” Mocarski said. “People often ask me which is the most dangerous rattlesnake and my reply is simple: ‘The one that just bit you’.”

While the Mohave is widely accepted as having the most potent venom, the diamondback, as the most common rattlesnake, accounts for the most bites and deaths.

While less common within city limits, Mocarski said rattlesnakes can certainly find their way into the urban environment, as can spiders and scorpions.

“There are two spiders considered a threat to humans in Arizona; the black widow and brown spiders,” Mocarski said.

Most spider bites will not require medical attention, but individuals should pay attention to the reaction.

“Everyone reacts differently to venom,” Mocarski explained. “The best course of action is to contact a poison control center and listen to the advice from medical professionals.”

As for scorpions, Mocarski

said the sting of most species is a bit more severe than that of a bee.

“But remember, there are

people out there who can die from a single bee sting,” he warned. “The bark scorpion is the only scorpion considered

a threat to people in Arizona, but anyone stung should always pay attention to how they are reacting.”

Mocarski said young children are of particular concern due to their natural curiosity.

“They want to explore their environment, so it is important to begin their education at a young age,” he explained. “Keep the message simple with

in its third season, which does a retraining of staff and management, a rebranding of a restaurant and offers an overhaul of the actual restaurant couldn’t work wonders for them.

“It’s our favorite show,” she said. “We watch it all the time.”

Would a show that had an episode filmed at a bar on Bourbon Street in New Orleans during their second season really come to Black Canyon City?

The couple had a friend in Cave Creek help produce a 10 minute submission video.

And then they waited.“We didn’t hear from them

for about a year, and then we received word that they were considering us,” Donna said. “We knew they were coming to Arizona, but they were considering between 400 bars.”

Without ever getting a commitment from the show the couple periodically would hear from members ofthe Bar Rescue staff, even receiving visits.

Finally in late January the show, with a crew of some 50 people, swooped in to work its magic.

On Jan. 23 they installed surveillance cameras. The

setup for the show starts by offering viewers a look at how the current bar/restaurant runs, illustrating some of the problems it might be facing.

After analyzing what he sees host Jon Taffer along with help from both a professional bartender and a chef go to work in helping transform the workplace.

“Jon is a very intelligent guy,” Donna said. “You listen to him talk and it’s really easy to get excited about the potential. On television he comes across mean and rough, but if you don’t argue with him he’s easy to get along with.”

In the course of five days the staff received extensive training. The interior of the restaurant was overhauled to offer a cleaner, cabin home-like feeling while a new smoker was installed in the kitchen to help the restaurant offer better barbeque. The exterior got a fresh bright yellow coat of paint and the sign advertising the restaurant has a new look and a new name.

“I bet the biggest difference is just the paint job on the outside of the building,” Scott said. “About 60 percent of our business is freeway traffic. Just having a bright colored building creates more attention.”

Since Scott’s family has been in the restaurant business in

Arizona since 1962, including The Copper Latern, Crazy Ed’s and more recently the Horny Toad and the Satisfied Frog in Cave Creek they wanted to keep the Chilleen name for the restaurant.

As a result the name was changed from Kid Chilleen’s Bad Ass BBQ Steakhouse to simply Chilleen’s on 17 Saloon, Steak & BBQ.

“We thought the name was ingenious and wondered why we hadn’t come up with it before,” she said. “Overall it’s just amazing how much they changed. It rained almost the entire time they were here. It made the transformation even harder to believe.”

The early returns have illustrated that customers have taken notice.

“We are still getting a lot of comments from the customers,” Donna said. “They like what has been done. We’re up 28 percent, which is huge.”

Scott said a lot of the advice they received wasn’t magic, but that hearing it from another source reinforced beliefs.

“A lot of stuff we knew needed to be taken care of. After 10 years things start to break, but it takes funds to fix and update them,” he said. “He’s (Taffer) an intelligent man though and had a lot of good ideas.”

Donna said the bar typically

lived off its weekend crowds.“It was pretty dead during

the week, but we’re probably up 30 customers a day during the week and we’re probably up 50 to 100 customers on weekends.”

And the exciting part for the couple is that the episode of Bar Rescue featuring Chilleen’s on 17 hasn’t even aired yet.

The show’s third season debuted in February. The episode featuring Chilleen’s on 17 is set to air at 8 p.m., Sunday. The couple is planning a viewing party at the restaurant.

“Jon said that if we think we’re busy now we won’t believe what it’s like after the show airs,” Donna said.

Cactus Shadows falls to Greenway in wild gameThe fans that turned out to

Cactus Shadows High School Monday night saw a bizarre high school baseball game which included a steal of home, an umpire struck in the field of play by a batted ball, a catcher drill his pitcher in the back with a throw to second, and five runners thrown out at home plate.

While the game was unusual in nature the final result is one that is becoming frustratingly consistent for the Falcons, who dropped to 5-11 on the season with their sixth straight defeat, a 6-2 loss to Greenway.

Against the 21-1 Demons, the Falcons had their opportunities to win, going into the bottom of the sixth trailing only 3-2, before Greenway tacked on three runs in the seventh to pull away.

“We're close,” Falcons coach Gaetano Gianni said. “We're doing some good things, but it just seems we're a little snake bit.”

In Monday's defeat three plays swung the game for the visiting Demons.

After falling behind 2-0

through three innings the Falcons squared the game in the bottom of the fifth inning.

The rally started with Alex Paulson, the team's number nine hitter, getting a leadoff single. With one out Kyle Brown gave the Falcons runners at the corners on a single to right field. After Brown stole second base senior Jake Colombo drove one through the left side of the infield, for an RBI single. When sophomore Tyler Phillips followed with a sacrifice fly to left the game was knotted at two.

Unfortunately for the Falcons they would give the lead right back on a bizarre play.

With one out and the go-ahead run on third the Demons attempted a suicide squeeze against Falcons relief pitcher Michael Stirling. While Josh Weaver got a bat on the pitch, he popped the bunt up. A diving Stirling made a spectacular catch and had Aklinski dead to rights, nearly three quarters of the way to home plate. Stirling got up and made a strong throw to third. Instead of coming up with a momentum-swinging,

Marc Buckhout/The Foothills Focus Cactus Shadows senior relief pitcher Michael Stirling makes a diving catch of a bunt during Monday’s 6-2 loss to Greenway. To view more photos and videos from Monday’s game go to facebook.com/thefoothills.focus.

As for lizards, Mocarski said the only one dangerous to humans is the same one that can be easily avoided: the Gila monster.

“It wants nothing to do with people,”

Mocarski said. “Leave them alone and they’ll leave you alone. While I’m sure there has been an accidental bite somewhere throughout history, I’ve yet to hear about it.

“And remember, the Gila monster is protected in Arizona, so it is against the law to disturb, harass, or remove these animals from the wild.”

Scavenger hunt celebrates North Valley

The 2nd Mystery Car Rally will be zipping through North Scottsdale, Carefree and Carefree on April 14.

The event, a fundraiser for the Greater Pinnacle Peak Association, is used to raise funds for desert preservation, wildlife conservation, the arts and other community initiatives and donations to local nonprofits.

“We did one two years ago and we had 19 teams with about 60 people total participating,” Les Conklin, one of the event organizers said. “We try and come up with humerous clues that lead them to odd, interesting placess they may have never been to.”

Conklin said the event can accommodate up to 40 teams comfortably, with anywhere from 2 to 6 on a team.

At the starting point teams will be given an envelope of clues. Those clues will lead them to destinations where they will meet up with event organizers. Upon answering a question they will get a new set of clues that will lead them to the next location.

“We’re planning for the event to go about two hours with seven stops along the way,” Conklin said.

The rally will start at the Pima Norte Shopping Center, located on the southwest corner of Pima and Cave Creek Roads in North Scottsdale.

Throughout the scavenger hunt teams will also receive a poker card at each stop. Teams are encouraged to bring cameras along to compete in the free photo contest. Prizes will be awarded for best photographs. Rally points will be given to teams based on answers to questions and the

strength of their poker hand. The team that wins the grand prize will have the opportunity to release a rehabilitated horned owl back into the wild with the assistance from Wild at Heart.

The event will end at a central location. Teams are invited to stay following the scavenger hunt for a raffle, food, a cash bar as well as the release of the owl.

Rally registrations are tax-deductible. Early registration, on or before Sunday is $ 25 per adult, $5 donation per child (12 & under). Late registration, after Sunday is $30 per adult, $ 5 per child.

Payments can be made by check (payable to GPPA) or by major credit card via phone or online.

With a continued dedication to filmmakers and the independent film spirit, the PFF offers something for nearly every film fan. Along with the Phoenix Film Festival, the International Horror and Sci-Fi Film Festival occurs at the same time, in the same location. Annually, the two festivals combine to showcase

more than 100 films, hold numerous discussion panels with filmmakers and other film talent, offer educational seminars for the young budding filmmaker in the family, and celebrate nightly in the designated party pavilion. This is an event in a constant state of activity.

This year’s festival boasts a notable display of films in numerous genre categories. The opening night film is The Spectacular Now directed by James Ponsoldt and starring Shailene Woodley (The Descendants) and Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Smashed). The film centers on a hard partying high school senior who meets a girl the exact opposite of everything that inspires his current life.

The promising high school football drama Underdogs,

starring D.B. Sweeney (The Cutting Edge) and Natalie Imbruglia (Neighbours) who will both be in attendance at the festival, screens Saturday night and surrounds a small town team with aspirations of playing in the state championship against the cross-town rival.

The unique late night programming, helmed by IHSFF director Andrea Beesley, displays some genre treats for the horror and science fiction fans highlighted by Kiss of the Damned directed by Xan Cassavetes (daughter of John Cassavetes) and The Ghastly Love of Johnny X directed Paul Bunnell. Along with the feature length films there are an abundance of short films.

Scottsdale Harkins 101 is located at 7000 E. Mayo Blvd. in Scottsdale. For schedules and ticketing go to phoenixfilmfestival.com.

inning-ending double play the throw was missed by the Falcons third baseman.

When the ball rolled into left field Aklinski was able to get all the way back to third, tag and then run home to give his team the lead.

Despite falling behind 3-2 the Falcons didn't hang their heads. A pair of walks set the stage for Cameron Ketchum, who came up with a single to left field.

Gianni waved the potential tying run home, but a strong throw got to the catcher with the Falcons base runner only halfway down the line from third. The Demons catcher executed the run down to get the second out of the inning.

“I made a mistake with that decision. We've really struggled to come up with the clutch hits recently,” Gianni said in explaining what influenced his decision.

Despite the base running error, the Falcons still had two runners on with two outs. Falcons junior Kyle Brown

came up with a two-out single to center field. Once again Gianni waved the potential tying run toward home plate.

This time on a bang-bang play Alex Paulson was called out at the plate.

“I really thought he got under the tag,” Gianni said. “On a hit to center field, with a runner with good speed you figure you're going to be able to score in that situation.”

The Falcons had the heart of their order due up in the bottom of the seventh inning, but when

Greenway came up with three runs in the top of the seventh it proved too much for the Falcons to overcome in the final inning.

““We're frustrated, but the kids are still excited to play. We have good energy. I know they won't quit,” he said.

Gianni said his team has left it little margin for error if they are to reach the postseason. “We're going to have to win a lot of games this month. I think we've got it in us though. We've pitched well as a team this season. If we can just get some clutch hits I think we can do it,” he said.

The Falcons looked to get back into the win column when they played a 7 p.m. game at Camelback on Thursday before hosting Thunderbird on Friday. Next week they play at Goldwater on Monday and at Thunderbird on Tuesday. The latter three games are all 4 p.m. starts. Let it Fly camp returns for another yearThe Let it Fly Football Drills

and Skills Camp returns for another year with 8 a.m. – 10 a.m. sessions every Saturday from April – July at Anthem Prep Academy.

Former Northern Arizona University quarterback Mark Huston promises a challenging and productive experience for youth, ages 6 – 18.

Huston sets the camp up to mimic workouts used by athletes at the higher levels, with a series of 12 stations focusing on developing different skills in a fast-paced environment. Campers rotate stations every six minutes.

The coach at Anthem Prep promises a 10 to 1 ratio of athletes to coaches. Whether a child is an experienced athlete, or brand new to football, Huston is confident their effort will pay dividends.

Along with a number of experienced youth coaches, campers also receive instruction from graduates of the camp, many of whom are current Boulder Creek High School football players.

Huston said looking ahead to the 2013-14 school year there will be close to 50 former Let It Fly Football Drills & Skills Camp attendees playing for the Boulder Creek varsity, junior varsity and freshman teams.

From year one, back in 2005 when he worked with 6 kids, to last year’s camp which drew 176, Huston is looking to train 200 this year and has visions of adding camp locations throughout the Valley beginning this summer.

Campers can pay $30 per Saturday session, or get progressively better deals for committing to more weekly sessions.

The Anthem Prep Academy Football Field is located at 42200 N. 41st Drive in Anthem.

For information on the camp, go to letitflyfootballcamp.com, call 623-498-0577, or email Coach Huston at [email protected].

ShIELDS

O’REILLYYour article about climbing Black Mountain (March 20) was very good. But you should note that there are signs about 1/4 of the way up directing hikers to the left onto the public access trail. Following the road that curves up and to the west takes hikers onto private land.

The legal trail follows a town easement that gets up to the ridge about 1/4 mile past the trail sign. The views of Cave Creek are still spectacular.

By my estimate, up to 200 people a day hike this trail. They are welcome. But the deterioration of the trail in the past few years has been dramatic. The nearly vertical layers of slate and phyllite have sharp edges and yet break away, leading hikers to make “spider” trails to the right and to the left to get away from big rocks and gullies. In other places, the trail “creeps”

downhill as much as a foot a year exposing bare rock and destroying vegetation.

The top half of the trail is within the Black Mountain County Preserve. But the county has taken no action there to protect the environment. As a Cave Creek Councilman, I have been in touch with Maricopa County trails people. It appears that the only way to reduce the environmental degradation will be an ongoing and coordinated local volunteer effort to maintain the trail as best we can.

This trail is convenient, challenging and scenic and, at the same time, fragile.

Please contact me if you are willing to help on a regular basis. Yours truly, ThomasMcGuire Cave Creek Town Councilman [email protected]

Councilman seeks preservation help

Left leaning view on same-sex marriage doesn’t transfer to other issuesIn spite of the nearly

unprecedented velocity of change in American attitudes on the

legality and acceptance of same-sex m a r r i a g e , according to the Gallup Poll — from 68 percent-27 p e r c e n t opposit ion

during the Bill Clinton years to 53 percent-46 support after Barack Obama’s re-election (a swing of 48 percent of the population in favor of same-sex marriage in just 16 years) — American voters have not undergone a mass conversion to liberalism on the so-called “social issues. “

You want evidence for that assertion? Consider the following: Twenty years ago, when Americans were asked, “In general, do you feel that laws covering the sale of firearms

should be made more strict, less strict or kept as they are now?” a full 70 percent of respondents in 1993 supported “more strict “ gun laws, and just 24 percent opted for no changes in the existing gun laws.

Over the last generation, Americans, always un predictable, can be said to have moved dramatically to the left on gays and steadily to the right on guns.

But what about abortion? No liberal groundswell on this relentlessly divisive issue, either. When asked, “With respect to the abortion issue, would you consider yourself to be ‘pro-choice’ or ‘pro-life’?” just 44 percent of Americans on average during the Obama years have described themselves as “pro-choice” to Gallup, while 48 percent chose the “pro-life” label. This represents a consistent drop in the “pro-choice” number from that found during the George W. Bush White House years.

When asked, irrespective of their attitudes on the legality of abortion, whether they personally “believe that in general it is morally acceptable or morally wrong, “ the split in 2004 when the strongly pro-life George W. Bush was re-elected was 50 percent “morally wrong“ and 40 percent “morally acceptable.”

By 2012, when the strongly pro-choice Barack Obama was winning re-election, the results were basically unchanged — 51 percent “morally wrong “ and 38 percent “morally acceptable.”

Why, some 40 years after the milestone Roe v. Wade case that legalized the medical procedure nationwide, does abortion remain an open wound in the body politic? Obviously, because of the unresolved (maybe unresolvable) debate over the legal and philosophical status of the pre-born.

Is its value determined only

by the subjective opinion of the woman who is carrying him or her? No happy mother-to-be has ever joyfully announced: “Congratulate me! We’re having a fetus.” That fetus, with her own heartbeat, represents either life or potential life.

And what about the competing rights of the pregnant woman? Do the circumstances of her impregnation not endow her with greater rights than the potential son or daughter growing within her?

Whatever the answers to these and all the other painful questions surrounding pregnancy and birth, we do know that an abortion is not anything like, as some have argued, an appendectomy. A mass of protoplasm does not have its own unique DNA. We also know that Americans have no intention of arresting and convicting any woman who, after consulting her conscience, her confessor and her physician, chooses to abort.

On abortion, Americans in practice remain simultaneously pro-choice and anti-abortion. On the issue of same-sex marriage, Americans are accepting and even welcoming. This must be shaped by the report from the December Wall Street Journal-NBC News poll that 65 percent of Americans “personally know or work with someone who is gay or lesbian.”

In that same survey, 51 percent overall favored allowing same-sex marriages and 40 percent opposed. But among those with a family member who is gay or lesbian (read, Ohio Republican Sen. Rob Portman), 64 percent back same-sex marriage, and just 27 percent do not.

However you analyze it, same-sex marriage and abortion are totally different questions.

Hey, isn’t that the Spring Bunny?Because this is the holiest

week of the year on the Judeo-Christian calendar, it might be useful to look at how theology is faring in the age of secularism.

As you may know, there is a movement in America to remove the word “ G o d ” from the c u r r e n c y, to replace

the word “Christmas” with “winter” and to replace the word “Easter”’ with “spring.” On Long Island, where I live, one school is running a “spring egg hunt” with a special appearance by the “Spring Bunny.”

Of course, this kind of stupidity is insulting to Christians, but it’s been going on for years. Committed secular folks feel no shame or fear whatsoever in attempting to diminish Christian celebrations.

But those same people would never intrude on Ramadan, because they fear reprisal. And you very rarely hear the anti-religious loons go after Jewish traditions, because the Jews have powerful organizations that will respond quickly to anti-Semitic behavior.

It is, however, a different story

in the Christian precincts. Here, there is no organized resistance to attacks despite the fact that about 80 percent of the U.S. population describes itself as Christian.

Perhaps the lack of response to assaults on Christian tradition can be attributed to the “turn the other cheek” mandate that the theology espouses. But more likely, it’s because the Christian community is complacent. Unlike Jews and Muslims, they generally don’t feel a sense of urgency when their faith is attacked.

Recently at Florida Atlantic University, communications instructor Dr. Deandre Poole ordered his students to write the name “Jesus” on a piece of paper, drop the paper to the floor and stomp on it. Poole contended the exercise was necessary in order to develop “critical thinking.”

Ryan Rotela, one of the students and a Mormon, refused the order. He was quickly disciplined by the university and removed from the class.

After my TV program began investigating the situation, FAU quickly reversed their decision, apologized to Rotela and allowed him to continue in the class without answering to the instructor, who, incredibly, is a Democratic Party official in Florida.

What struck me about this

case was the lack of outrage by the Christian community in Florida. Rotela’s story was reported in the local media, but nothing really happened until it got to the national level.

There is no question that secular forces in America feel emboldened and are pushing the anti-religion envelopes as far as they can. They know the media are largely behind them, and they also have seen little pushback from Christian leadership. So why not demand that the Easter Bunny be rechristened? Why not attack public manger displays? What’s the downside?

While contemplating the resurrection of Jesus this week, American Christians might want to resurrect themselves. Because if the anti-Christian movement continues and does not see opposition rising up, in 20 years the spring bunny will be placing spring eggs into a spring basket everywhere.

The Easter Bunny? Extinct.Veteran TV news anchor Bill O’Reilly is
