TherearemanywaystodescribeProfessorDupee.However,thebestwaywouldbejust“ProfessorDupee.”DuringWinterColloquiumDr.Dupeegavethestudentsanabbreviatedstoryofhislifeandhowhefoundhis“calling.”Thoughhedidelaborate,hemanagedtosumitupinonepoignantstatementthatwentalittlesomethinglikethis:“Ilovebeingcalled‘Professor’becauseIlovetoteach.”

However,ProfessorDupeeisnotalwaysthatserious.Hisclasseswere

sourcesofentertainmentaswellaseducation.Hehadamyriadofdifferentmethodstocapturethefleetingattentionofcollegestudentsthathadmuchbetterthingstodo,likestareattheirphones.Forexample,inoneclass,hewouldhavehisstudentstastecheesesfromalloverEuropeandmatcheachcheesetoaEuropeancountry.Additionally,hewouldplaymoviesinmanyofhisclasses,fusinghisloveforfilmwithhispassioninhistory,givingmanystudentsareprievefrom“ordinary”classactivities.

Itprobablyisveryapparentthatcompletelycontrarytothestereotypeofstrict,scaryprofessors,Dr.Dupeeisextremelyapproachable.Hewouldalwaysbeavailabletotalkifastudenthadconcernsabouttheirgrades,hadquestionsabouttheclassmaterial,orevenjustneededhelpwithpersonalmatters.ProfessorDupeeepitomizedtheimageofthekind,caringinstructor,ofthetypeofMr.KeatinginDeadPoetsSociety,butabitmoresubdued.

Becauseheissuchawonderfulteacherandperson,manyofhisstudentsarestilldisappointedthattheycannottakehisclassesanymore.HeprobablyislivingitupinNipomobutitisaretirementextremelywelldeserved.Afteryearsofinspiring,exciting,helping,andteaching,Dr.Dupeedeservesthebestretirement—untilsomeofhisformerstudentsganguptodraghimbackbecausetheymisshimtoomuch!

NewDelmerRossScholarshipFund:TherecurrentlyexistsanendowedscholarshipinthenameofElmerRoss,namedinHonorofDr.DelmerRoss’sfather,forstudentsinterestedinpursuingLatinAmericanstudies.ThisyearwereceivedanothergenerousgiftfromtheestateofDelmerRosstoestablishanotherscholarshiptohelpsendstudentstotraveltoconferencestopresenttheirresearch.SocialStudies:TeachingEmphasisWeareworkingwiththeSchoolofEducationtodevelopatrackforourmajorstocompleteteachingcredentialcoursesaspartoftheirfour-yeardegree.KatherineKohisleadingthiseffort.NewB.A.inPoliticalScience(we’rebringingitback!)IndayspastweofferedaB.A.inHistoryandPoliticalScience(knowncolloquiallyatthetimeastheHIPSmajor!).HPSstudentsregularlyserveasinternsintheofficesofcongressionalrepresentatives,stateassemblymembers,andlocalgovernment.Theideaofcreatingamajorinpoliticalsciencehaslongbeenconsideredanaturalfitforourdepartment.AproposalforthenewmajoriscurrentlyunderreviewbytheCollegeofArtsandSciences,andhassofarbeenwellreceived.


BackusLecture2018

Forthe2018BackusLecture,TimothyGolden,whodirectstheDonaldBlakeCenterfortheStudyofRace,Ethnicity,andCultureatWallaWallaUniversitygaveatalkon“TheSicknessUntoLife:Auto-Immunity,Racism,andAmericanDemocracy”,inwhichheexaminedthepermanenceofracismandthemoralobligationtoresistit.

AnativeofPhiladelphia,Pa.,Golden’scareerincluded20yearsasacriminaldefenseattorneyandastintintheFederalCourtofAppeals.

Wehadafantasticturnoutforthescreeningofthedocumentary,“Dalya’sOtherCountry”,astoryofateenageMuslimgirlleavingAleppo,herparents’divorce,andherall-girlCatholichighschoolinCalifornia.Apanelofstudents,includingtwofromourGlobalStudiesprogram,respondedtothefilmmakers.CarrieSpecht,(topleftcorner),AssistantProf.ofFilmandTelevision,co-moderatedtheeventalongwithKenCrane;wealsoworkedwithcommunitypartnersWorldAffairsCouncilofInlandSouthernCalifornia.Big“Thanks”toKetsiaDuvallfororganizingthepanelandcreatingthephotomontageabove.

Dr.Kohspentthispastspringonsabbatical,takingtimetoconductresearchinEnglandonanewprojectthatfollowstheadventuresoftheElizabethanJeweller,SirWilliamHerrick.HerresearchtookhertoarchivesinCambridge,Oxford,Manchester,Leicester,andLondon.SheisalsointheprocessoffinishinguparticlesandaneditionoflettersfortheOxfordHistoricalSociety.Inhersparetime,shehasbeenpreparingforhercoursesthisyearinReformationhistory,Islamichistory,intellectualhistory,and(ofcourse)Europeanhistory.

EricVega

Dr.Vegahasrecentlypresentedresearchonmodesofcontactbetweentransnationalfathersandtheirchildren(SocietyforResearchinChildDevelopment)andiscurrentlyinterviewingfathers/parentsontheirlifestylesports(skateboarding)andparentingpractices.Henowteachestheresearchmethodscourseforallthemajorsinthedepartment,aswellasawidearrayofcoursesforthesociologymajorsinpopculture,gender,andfamilies.

WonYoon

Wonisourveteranprofessorandscholarinresidence.HeisworkingonhislatestbookabouttheAsiandiasporaintheAmericasintheperiodbetweentheOpiumWarandthePacificWar(1842to1941).HecontinuestosupportbothourGlobalStudiesandsociologymajorswithhisspecializationsinthesocialdevelopmentofEastAsiaandimpactsofglobalization.HealsoregularlycontributestotheKoreanlanguageSignsoftheTimes.


AliciaGutierrez-Romine

Dr.Gutierrez-Rominehasbeenbusywithfinishinghermanuscriptforpublication.Overthesummershewasabletohireastudentworkerandsubmitacompletedraftforreview.Shehassincereceivedcommentsfromthosereviewersandisexpectingtobedonewiththemanuscriptinthenextfewmonthssoshecangethernextresearchprojectofftheground.Inadditiontomanuscriptprep,Dr.Gutierrez-RominerecentlypresentedsomeofherresearchattheWesternHistoryAssociation’sAnnualMeetinginSanAntonio,Texas,whereshewasalsoaskedbyC-SPANtodoaninterviewforAmericanHistoryTV.ShewillalsopresentthisspringattheSigeristCircleScholarlySessionattheAmericanAssociationofHistoryofMedicineinColumbus,Ohio.

KenCrane

2018beganwithKenandstudentshostinganInternationalVisitordelegationofprofessionalsfromSloveniawhoworkinrefugeeasylumandsupport.InJuneKenpresentedapaperattheMigrationConferenceinPortugalonthereactionofIraqirefugeeyouthtorecentshiftsinUSrefugeepolicy.KenkeepspluggingawayonamanuscriptbasedonsevenyearsofethnographicworkwithIraqirefugeesintheInlandEmpire.Heheattemptstochairadepartmentwhich,hesays,“isthebestgroupofpeopleIhaveeverworkedwithbealotworseiftheyweren’tsuchkindandcollegialtypes,mostly.”
