Why Consider Living Donor Liver Transplantation? The Ochsner Multi-Organ Transplant Institute encourages patients and their families to consider the opportunity of living donor liver transplantation. Living liver donation reduces the risk of health deterioration for patients in need of a liver transplant by decreasing their time on the wait list. Currently in the United States, there are more than 16,900 patients waiting for a liver transplant and this program is important in helping meet the organ shortage.

Who Can Be a Donor?Donors can be any healthy individual between the ages of 18 and 60 years old who have a compatible blood type with the recipient. They may be a spouse, relative, friend or an individual unrelated to the recipient.

What is the Living Donor Process?• If you decide to donate, our transplant coordinators will organize your workup process which includes tests

such as blood tests, a CT scan and an MRI, and consultations with other healthcare specialists. The results of this assessment are reviewed by the donor team and a decision is made as to whether you are suitable for living liver donation.

• Once the Ochsner transplant team reviews your tests and they are satisfactory, you are offered a tentative target surgery date based on both your and the recipient’s availability.

• The final step is surgery. During the surgery, part of the liver is removed. Almost immediately the liver begins to regenerate and is close to being completely regenerated after 6 weeks.

Living Donor Surgery – What to Expect? The donor surgery typically lasts 6 hours. Most donors are discharged from the hospital approximately 5-7 days after the operation and they can usually return to work after 4-6 weeks.

What are the Advantages of Living Donor Transplantation?• Provides the recipient with a high-quality organ• Shorter wait time for recipient to receive an organ, reducing risk of death or disqualification from wait list• Provides a unique opportunity to restore health to a close friend or family member • Recipients get a transplant when their health is optimized and they will benefit the most

What are the Risks to the Donor?Liver donation has risks, as with any major surgery. Risks are discussed during the assessment and are carefully reviewed during visits with the Ochsner transplant team.
