SIX YEARS ago, Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital & Medical Research Institute (KDAH) opened its doors with the objective to strengthen medical care in the communities we serve, and empower patients—and their families—to make informed choices. A tribute by Anil and I to my father-in-law Dhirubhai Ambani, and dedicated to my mother-in-law Kokilaben, this institution was created to bridge the gaps in the Indian healthcare system. Indeed, by bringing the world’s best technology and treatment protocols to India, we wished to transform the way our country views healthcare.

Looking back, this has been a life-changing journey for me. Growing this project from the ground up, nurturing it through its teething troubles, establishing enduring systems and processes, building a committed team of professionals who share the dream, and then watching it take wing with a blend of pride, joy and trepidation has been an intense experience—challenging, yet infinitely gratifying.

Resolute in our belief that compassion and comfort are the cornerstones of care, we have managed to live up to the very high ethical and professional standards we set ourselves upon inception, and meet the stringent benchmarks that characterise the finest medical institutions across the world. We have succeeded in blazing a very individual trail by pursuing a full-time specialist system, and achieved a convergence of global best practices adapted to Indian needs with a family of healthcare professionals that combines talent, technical expertise and commitment. Today, they are the backbone of KDAH.

These are just some of the successes that impel us to strive harder to be the best we can be. Clinical ServicesIn India, every one in 100 live births suffers from Congenital Heart Disease (CHD). On a very generous estimate, only around 10,000 to 15,000 congenital heart surgeries are performed in India annually, in about a dozen dedicated centres capable of taking care of neonates and infants after heart surgery. This is only about a tenth of what needs to be done. There was no integrated centre for children’s cardiac care in Mumbai and, in fact, the whole of Western India. Sensing the crying need, we set up a comprehensive Children’s Heart Centre, a welcome development in a region where cardiac care for children needs to be continually supported and subsidised.

Another gap recognised was in the area of liver transplant. Every year, around 250,000 patients die of liver failure in India owing to cirrhosis and over 25,000 patients need a liver transplant every year. However, there was no comprehensive liver transplant setup

in Western India. Kokilaben Hospital has thus taken the initiative and established a dedicated Centre for Liver Transplant to fill this gap.

Indeed, we are proud to have identified these gaps in the healthcare system and bridged them successfully. Going forward, we pledge to continue along the same path in our mission to remain benchmarked to the best international practices and offer our communities the best healthcare they so richly deserve.

Research Activities at Kokilaben HospitalA large part of our research is clinical. It is not restricted to laboratories but carried out across specialities, including cardiology, cardiac surgery, anaesthesiology, radiology, pathology, histo-pathology, nephrology, neurology, urology, orthopaedics, paediatric cardiac surgery, physical medicine and rehabilitation. Our patients are the subjects of our research data collection—the data is then analysed and the findings prepared for publication or presentation.

We have established an Institutional Scientific and Ethics Board (ISEB) to ensure the protection of the rights, safety and well-being of human subjects involved in research projects and to provide public assurance of that protection, which is registered with the regulatory authority of our country, Drug Controller General of India. ISEB has reviewed 161 clinical research projects in the past few years, of which 107 have been initiated by us.

EXCELLENCE AND BEYONDThe ‘Centres of Excellence’ and Multispecialty Clinics at Kokilaben Hospital aim to provide best-in-class tertiary and quaternary care medical services. The Living Donor Liver Transplant Programme is another first that started in late 2013, with over 100 liver transplants in a span of 2 years. It is the first-of-its-kind, comprehensive liver transplant centre in Western India.

The Centre for Rehabilitation and the Centre for Sports Medicine have revolutionised care, not just in the city but in the country. ISOLATION ROOMSThere are 40 isolation beds in our hospital; these are basically single rooms where patients are admitted to prevent cross-infection. ACADEMIC INITIATIVESMASTERS IN EMERGENCY MEDICINE (MEM)

The MEM (Three-Year Postgraduate Degree) programme aims to prepare a new generation of leaders in Emergency Medicine who will expand the field throughout India.

Emergency Medicine (EM) is a relatively new speciality within medicine that is expanding at a phenomenal pace globally. India has initiated a few training programmes at a limited number of institutions, but an enormous need still exists to train many more Emergency Physicians catering to the extensive demand.

George Washington University (GWU) has partnered with the medical faculty at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital for a Three-Year Post Graduate Programme in Emergency Medicine to prepare a new generation of leaders in medicine who will expand the field of Emergency Medicine throughout India.

Through the collaborative work of the faculty from Medical Faculty Associates (MFA) at GWU and Emergency Medicine Faculty at Kokilaben Hospital, students will have continuous guidance and education in specific topics and skills in Emergency Medicine. The faculty will provide lectures, seminars, simulations and clinical teaching to the residents. The quality of the educational programmes will be maintained through continuous assessment of the students, faculty and the overall programme.
