CTSWHAT IS AQUAPONICS?
Aquaponics is basically an integrated system for keeping sh and growing plants together in a mutually benecial cycle. To further dene it one could say that aquaponics is a blend of aquaculture (raising/farming aquatic animals such as sh, prawns, craysh or snails as food items) and hydroponics (cultivating plants in water). The sh produce waste-water which includes organic excreted wastes that turn into nitrates and ammonia. The nitrates and ammonia certainly are not good for the sh – but plants thrive on this naturally produced eective fertilizer.
In a basic aquaculture system, the water becomes increasingly toxic with the build up of the nitrates and ammonia – and water changes need to be done. These water changes require the addition of new water. Further loss via evaporation would require even more gallons of additional water.
With an aquaponics system, that original water is sent directly from the sh tank in to the plants that will lter out the waste products including ammonia and its metabolites. The continuous cycle provides owing water to the plants where it is cleaned, puried and oxygenated by their root systems. The water is constantly recycled back to the sh without requiring regular water changes. Aquaponics is a very ecient way to grow food while saving water via recycling… and uses approximately 2% of the water conventional irrigation would require to grow the same vegetable crop if planted in soil.
Aquaponics only requires a simple system: 1) a recycling pump that moves the system’s water out from the 2) sh-tank section, allowing it to ow into 3) a growing bed (and the various tubing or hoses that control water ow.) The plants are grown hydroponically (without soil) in the growing bed, planted in soilless media of gravel, porous lava-type grow rocks or porous expanded clay pellets. Small to medium size units are often planted in individual open mesh or basket style pods or pots, while family-size or commercial units may have larger gravel beds that can contain several plants. The plants’ roots are allowed dangle and extend down into the water previously used by the sh. As the plants extract the nutrients produced by the sh, the water in turn is puried and returns to the sh tank. Depending on the location of the unit, you may need to add a daylight-spectrum light source (grow-light.)
Aquaponics can grow crops of any size: kitchen counter-top herb gardens, full-sized vegetable crops in back-yard units and large commercial complexes of multiple tank systems. Rice paddies in China, Indonesia and Thailand have used aquaponics for many years, and the Aztecs built oating islands (chinampas) to grow maize and squash that beneted from the sh populations gathered below. Modern commercial aquaponics have been producing sh for human consumption (tilapia is a good example) for many years.
We are living in a modern world concerned with water consumption and conservation. Aquaponics is a very good way to conserve water. The only water required following the initial set-up is that amount needed to o-set evaporation. In comparison, traditional in-the-soil plant farming requires much more water to maintain healthy crops.

• Non-Toxic • Safe to use • High quality
• Forms the soil-free base seeds will grow in
• Naturally highly porous guides water near to roots
• Porosity gives beneficial bacteria a place to live
A good quality grow pot filler rock is needed in the aquarium grow-bed area to give plants the right opportunity to grow healthy roots. Home Grown Ponics’s Grow Stones have the correct texture to allow roots to “cling” securely and naturally.
The Grow Stones’ micro porosity also assists in basic mechanical and biological filtration. For best results, be sure that the layer of Grow Stones is at least 1/2” thick - filling the lower half of the slotted grow pot.
Home Grown Ponics premium Grow Stones are uncoated – color may darken or change once the stones are wet and the growing cycle has begun.
Grow Stones are specifically intended for use in freshwater hydroponic and aquaponic aquariums. The stones are non-toxic and inert, and will not affect water chemistry in any way. This natural gravel provides the required surface area and spaces between individual stones for beneficial bacteria to colonize.

Alfalfa is a delicate sprout used primarily for salads and sandwiches to add moisture and texture. This is a great sprout to use as a “blender” in sprout mixes. Alfalfa sprouts are high in Vitamin C and B2.
Alfalfa sprouts are a bit too delicate for cooking and are considered best when eaten fresh and raw. Not only will your home grown sprouts taste better but they can be cost eective, too. Some people believe that the freshest sprouts grown at home will also last longer in the refrigerator.
Alfalfa Sprouts can be slower to sprout, but after that they are fast growing. Alfalfa sprouts can be turning green in as few as 4 days, and ready to harvest on day 5 or 6 when small tender “micro-greens” leaves are present. To refrigerate: rinse sprouts well, and blot dry on a paper towel. Place sprouts and paper towel into a container with tight tting lid in a refrigerated vegetable area.
Arugula is an easily grown green that adds a tangy, peppery avor to salads. Use only young leaves when about 2 to 3 inches long.
HOW TO GROW ARUGULA: Simply rinse and scatter the seeds 1/16” apart on a soilless growing medium. Do not soak, as arugula has a mucus like seed-coating that will get slimey - causing germination to fail. Germination will occur in 5 to 7days at 55°F, faster at warmer temperatures. Best when used fresh. May be stored in refrigerator for a few days.
Micro-Greens and Sprouts: Harvest young sprouts right after germination occurs - the sprouts will turn green and there will be 2 leaves at the top.
Leaves: It may take up to 43 days to get the full leaf-growth - but you want to harvest arugula when leaves are young and tender. Ideal leaf will have a size of 2 to 3 inches long.

BASIL
CILANTRO
Item No. 96103 Cilantro Seed - 5.5 gram packet
Item No. 96108 Basil Seed - 8.5 gram packet
Fragrant and tasty is easy to grow - basil may be used fresh or dried and is perfect for pesto! Basil is loaded with a volatile oil responsible for the heady aroma and strong avor so essential to cooking. Italian Large Leaf Basil is regarded as the essential variety for true Neapolitan cuisine.
HARVESTING BASIL: Harvest young basil for use as a micro-green in salads. Use larger leaves fresh or dried in tomato dishes, pasta sauces, vegetables and soups. Frequent harvesting will prolong the life of the plant. Be sure to leave enough foliage on your plant so it can continue to grow.
BEST FLAVOR: basil should be torn rather than chopped to release the avorful oils. When cut or chopped the oil stays in the leaf.
Fresh is usually best: store basil fresh for a week or less by wrapping several leaves in a paper towel inside an airtight bag in the refrigerator. Store dried basil in closed jars in a cool, dry space.
This slow-bolting strain of cilantro is grown primarily for its broad, deep green, celery-like, pungent foliage. Typically used in Asian and Mexican cuisine, Cilantro is often used to avor meats, pickles and baked goods.
HOW TO PLANT CILANTRO: Cilantro does not need to be soaked prior to planting. Once plants begin to grow, re-plant replacement crops in 3 week cycles.
HARVESTING CILANTRO: Select older, outer leaves and clip o above the plant’s crown. Once trimmed the plant will not grow that leaf back, but younger leaves will mature elsewhere for up to 8 weeks.
Best and strongest in avor when used fresh. May be stored in refrigerator for up to 2 weeks if wrapped in a paper towel, but avor will decrease.

All parts of a pea plant are edible - you can use the entire sprout - stem, leaves and any tendrils that appear.
Peas are a quick and easy crop. Germination is in about 8 to 14 days depending on temperature. Harvest is usually 3 weeks after planting. Harvest when shoots are 6 to 8 inches tall by clipping o the top including the rst set of leaves. You can top-harvest by clipping 2 to 6 inches every 3 weeks until the shoot’s avor starts to turn bitter.
You can plant a large volume of peas at staggered dates to insure a steady supply of sprouts/shots. This gourmet salad treat of tender yet crispy shoots can also be used as a garnish or as part of a quick stir-fry recipe.
Daikon Radish (also known as kaiware) has tall, silky, crisp white stems and crisp green leaves. These sprouts are fast growing with a spicy, hot avour which is perfect for use fresh in salads or sandwiches. For a avor and texture boost - add to soups, sushi rolls or stir fry. Grown to micro-leaf stage, they are lovely as a garnish and can be mixed with alfalfa sprouts.
Radish is high in Vitamin C and potassium, and is a good source of Vitamins A, B, C, E, and K. Radish is also a source of minerals as well as trace minerals, carotene, chlorophyll, amino acids and protein.
Harvest is usually on day 5 or 6. Planting too many radish seeds can create a “sprout mat” - but this can be broken up in a bowl of cold water by gentle agitation. Allow sprouts to dry a bit (do not store wet) and place in a plastic bag or sealed container for refrigeration.

SOYBEAN
WHEAT
Item No. 96107 Wheat Seed - 15 gram packet
Item No. 96106 Soybean Seed - 15 gram packet
Soybeans are easy to grow. The sprouts are nutritionally rich with avor akin to peanuts. Soybean sprouts can be dicult to digest when eaten raw, so some people prefer to cook the soybean sprouts before eating them.
Soak seed for 2 to 12 hoursor until seeds have softened. Soaking for 4 hours seems to be the average time. Germination will be best at room temperatures of 70°.
Short-root sprouts (roots 1/16” to 1/4” long) can be seen in as little as 12 hours. Longer-root sprouts (3 to 5 centimeters) will take about 72 hours. Choose the length and texture that appeals to you the most. Soybeans vary a lot in timing - so harvest time can be as long as 6 days.
Allow sprouts to dry a bit - until they are dry to the touch. Do not store wet. Place in a plastic bag or other sealed container for refrigeration.
It is very easy to grow wheatgrass. Among many other health benets - wheatgrass is thought to cleanse the blood and neutralize toxins and carcinogens in the body. Wheatgrass is wheat gluten free.
It is okay to crowd the seeds and allow them to touch. Wheat grass grows a blade of grass that takes less room than the seed itself. Grass will be 1 to 2 inches tall by day 3, 4 or 5.
Harvest by cutting above the growing medium surface when grass is 6” or taller. If you decide to store some grass - minimize moisture and transfer into a plastic bag or other sealed container and refrigerate. Wheatgrass can be dried by laying at on a paper towel, or by laying at on a baking sheet and placing in an oven at 150 degrees until dry. When it is thoroughly dry, use scissors to cut into very small pieces or grind it into a powder to be used in salads, juices or smoothies.
