We Believe Inthe Power of Education...To Help End PovertyBuild a School – Transform a CommunityIn November 2014 the primary employer in Kwapia, inthe Ashanti Region in Ghana, a gold mining company, closed. 98% of the workers lost their jobs.

Kwapia, Ghana has struggled and their young kidshave turned to crime as a means to help support theirfamilies financially. In the small rural community ofKwapia, the roads are unpaved and there is no sewersystem or infrastructure, but the children are nodifferent than those found the world over: bright, curious and enthusiastic.

Fr. John Amankwah Ph.D., professor atMount St. Joseph University andAssociate Pastor at St. Williams, St.Teresa Avila was saddened by what wastaking place in his home town ofKwapia, in the Ashanti Region in Ghana.

Fr. John was born in Kwapia, Ghana. where heentered Catholic Primary School at the age of five. In

those days, schools were mainly built bythe missionaries in Africa. At the age of nine hewent to live with a Catholic Missionary from theNetherlands. He later entered St. Teresa’s MinorSeminary.

After being ordained a priest, he visited many villagesand saw the decline of education in Kwapia, Ghanadue to the military interventions from 1966 to 2001.School buildings were dilapidated and many childrenattending school studied outside for lack of adequatebuildings. Teachers were mostly high schoolgraduates. He also saw many children whose parentscould not afford the school tuition roaming about intheir neighborhoods. Having seen the deplorableconditions of the educational system in his country, the potential of children escaping poverty was now injeopardy. Talking with friends, a 501(c)(3) foundationwas established called International Mission forChildren (IMC).

Bishop John Yaw Afoakwah ofthe Catholic Diocese of Obuasi, whole heartily approved andengaged local partnersfrom the Ghana region.
