The SA CATI SystemThis system consists of transponders which are able to broadcast the position, speed, direction, height and identification of the UAV on which it is installed. The transponders can be configured to do that at a certain rate, or only when it is interrogated by a predefined unit. The operator of the UAV has real time ID of his own UAV and other UAVs in the area, with the system installed. Other units can also access the info by using the system, and it can be made available through the web. All communication can be encrypted, and performed on a single narrowband frequency.

ApplicationThe regulation until now, restricts the use of UAV in civil airspace to be within visual line of sight. In UAV/UAS working groups discussing the use of UAV beyond line of sight (BLOS) one of the key elements has been the possibility to identify the UAV at all times via electronic devices. This system has been developed in order to meet this requirement, and give the UAV operators the possibility always to identify the UAV in all scenarios (also future BLOS operations). Range: Tested to 60 km Beyond Visual Line Of Sight.

Science – how does it work? The UAV CATI system consists of a transponder that can be configured for either airborne installation or ground station use:

Airborne configuration: Bluetooth disabled, because power consumption is highly important

Ground station configuration: Bluetooth enabled, for easy connection to ground infrastructure.

Built-in GPS Built-in accelerometer and barometric sensor

The transponders are able to exchange information at a high rate between two units if necessary; alternatively it can broadcast to all units. Discrete I/O and Analog inputs provide the possibility of communicating the environmental condition of each transponder.

The technology is derived from the well proven VDL Mode 4 Aviation technology; however it transmits on 869.525 MHz. It can handle 75 transponders within line of sight @ 1 sec. update rate, or more with lower update rate.

The ground station transponder is connected by bluetooth to a windows-based PC, tablet or smartphone, which has the CATI system application installed and uses Open Street Map as map interface. The application shows activity track on the map on PC/tablet or smartphone. In case of accident of the UAV, the last position will be displayed on the map with coordinates. The battery backup lasts up until 3 hours.
