3. Place one piece Cv Expansion Plug assembly into the holeso that it bottoms on the 118° shoulder.

4. Using the proper Farmington Engineering installation tool,press the ball into the plug. The ball should be pressed to aflush or slightly below flush condition. The correct tolerance is +0/-.010" (0.25mm)

5. Pressing the ball into the plug can be accomplished by using the installation tool with a hammer or an arbor press.For larger production, stationary or hand-held pneumatic orhydraulic tools are normally used.

6. Cv Expansion Plugs provide for reliable and consistent proofpressure performance. Periodic checks of proof pressureshould be made to verify that installation is correctly accomplished.

Installation:Cv Expansion Plugs are designed to fit holes with a total

diameter tolerance of –0/+0.004"(.1mm). This tolerance isachieved with a simple drilling operation and secondary reamingis not necessary nor recommended. Cv Expansion Plugs have a one-piece design for fast, easy installation.

Installation is accomplished by simply pushing the steelball into the Cv Plug, causing the plug to expand. The plug landsand grooves press into the surrounding hole material, providinga reliable seal and anchorage up to 40K psi.

These simple instructions should be followed wheninstalling Cv Expansion Plugs:

1. Drill the installation hole to the recommended diameter usinga standard drill with a 118° point. Additional reaming is notnecessary. The ‘as drilled’ surface finish provides for betterplug retention and higher proof pressures, then does areamed surface finish.

2. Inspect the installation hole for proper depth, diameter andverify it is free of cutting oils, grease and machine chips.

Removal:Cv Expansion Plugs are easily removed by simple

machining. The steel ball hardness is controlled toRockwell 32-47C, depending on the type of steel. Followthese instructions for easy removal:1. Drill and tap threads into the steel ball

2. Thread a standard bolt with striker into the steel balland pull the ball from the Cv Plug.

3. Drill and tap Threads into the I.D. of the Cv Plug.Use a Standard bolt with striker to pull the plug from the hole.

4. Check installation hole tolerances before installing a new Cv Expansion Plug.

Threaded Plugs Farmington Engineering offers two types of thread-ed plugs designed for use in standard SAE ports:Hollow or Socket Hex and Hex Head. They are carbon steel, straight-threaded O-ring plugs withzinc chromate plating and conform to SAE J514standards. Buna or Viton O-ring seals are available.Sizes range from SAE 2 to SAE 24.

Rivet Rv PlugsAlso known as pop-rivet plugs,these Rv plugs are installed withan air gun which pulls a taperedmandrel through a sleeve to create an expansion seal. The Rv Plug does not require aninstallation shoulder, so no secondary counter-bore operationis required. Rv plugs are onepiece assemblies made of carbonsteel which is heat treated and black oxide coated.They are available in metric sizes ranging from 4 to10mm. Installation guns and nose piece assembliesare also available.
